Sarah, you haven’t been scammed. You can get the password by plugging it into a device putting into recovery mode, which I forgot how to do but there is probably some tutorial online, and restoring the device. This will wipe the device. The only issue is, as far as I know, this only works with iPhones, iPads, and maybe the 2019 iPad touch. Another edit: You have to plug it into a device with iTunes (a computer or Mac, laptop or MacBook), and iTunes to restore it.

For the macbook you need to get a USB drive with a version of mac os that the macbook can run and try booting from the USB and install the mac os, after that u can take out the USB and u should be good to go

Apple Macbook is good, The icon on the boot shows it does not contain Hard Drive/SSD (Boot Drive). So if you plug storage into it and need to install a new OS, it is good to go.

MacBook > Either the drive is dead, but also it could be that someone formatted the driver before pawning it to wipe it or removed the drive. Relatively easy/cheap fix.

I have 2 regional pawn shops.... I've always picked my items, and then asked for a "bundle price" Our local shops have pretty good ethics, and you have 24hrs to return electronics if they don't work properly. They also WON'T BUY your computer if you don't know the password. SOME of the older guitar amps are sold "as is"... and I'm OK with that, as I can repair them.
