Didn't mean to reuse the bolt, but I lost one the new ones. And didn't even have the brains to try it somewhere easier to reach :). Great running engines and pretty reliable if one doesn't follow the BMW's crazy 25000km oil change interval. They used somekind of aluminium/magnesium alloy in these for the weight distribution. Ha! I just bought an E93 328i vert 115k miles but black on black as a project. Seems to be in good shape but it won’t wake up. Trying to narrow which of the modules is providing issues - seems to be the JBE as nothing ignition controlled works. But they’re known for footwell module and CAS issues too. I love that you called a nearly 20 year old engine “modern.” Haha. All relative to what we like to work on. Perfect for your mom to cruise around in. Relatively easy to work on. Looks good but cheap enough door dings from going to the shops aren’t a huge deal. Easily replaceable if something happens to it.

The reason the oil pan bolts are single use is because they're aluminum bolts. Why does the N52 use so many aluminum bolts? It's because the block is made of a magnesium alloy that reacts poorly to steel bolts, so BMW switched to aluminum bolts. On the bright side, the bolt kits are relatively inexpensive and are readily available from FCP or your local dealer. As far as modern BMW's go, E90's really aren't too bad. Once you get into some of the newer turbo engines they get a little crazy, particularly the N63 V8 (trash).

Yuk. I am so DONE with all that 1 Series and E90 stuff. A BMW designed and built by GM, but not as good.😂 Keep the N52 cylinder head though. They have a value. BMW fitted steel oil sealing rings for the Vanos on the cams and they run directly in the alloy head - yup, you read that right. It's almost always the inlet cam that has Vanos oil pressure problems (no power, EML) when the steel ring wears a deep enough groove and BMW did not fit a removable cam carrier. Luckily the US didn't get the N53, the same thing but with Piezo high pressure direct injection. The injectors fail for fun and are only* $500........each. They rust less than an E46 but that's as far as I'm going to praise them. My Mum drove an E30 325i Convertible and an '82 Golf GTI. My mates all thought she was epic.
