definitely very happy to get a No 7 and No 8 in one go

Quite a nice group of planes. I have a #6, #7 and #8 on my table awaiting restoration. The #8 needs a new blade as does your #8. Check the length of the longest #7 blade. If it is more than 1/4in shorter than a new blade, the hardened strip forged into the end of the blade will have been sharpened away. The rest of the blade is mild steel which will not hold an edge. I prefer using a #6 to a #7. The 5 1/2 would be tempting, a bit longer than a #5 but with the same blade as the #6 and #7. Some folks like the low knobs, I prefer the high knob design. The #4 totes are often loose since only a single screw and the front hole to engage on the nib in the base often enlarges over time. Check the screws on the Record #5. Many such planes lost the original screws and folks often replace them with modern screws which do not fit well. The Record #40 plough plane is missing the wedge/screw part to hold the blade. A good picture on this page www.record-planes.com/files/2008/08/Record-No-040-Plough-Plane-1.jpg Dave.

cheers dave, i have already done up the No 6 (video soon) its a pleasure to use, yeah the number 8 blade is going to be a problem there is very little left and hard to come by in UK but I will sort something - i probably wont use that one so for show until i find a suitable iron. as for the no 7 they all have some issues but I went for the USA one which is an older one but is fitted with a Record Iron which is quite normal in UK - good sheffield steel, it also has the record stay set - a two part chip breaker that record patented in the 30's and I am going to keep that as like the idea of something different (BUt i think its a bit of a gimmick really) i think the plane is a 1909-10 from what i remember so not surprising the old blade is gone.

If you are not able to get a #8 blade in the UK, they are available in the US. Lee Valley sell replacement blades for Record and Stanley planes including the #8. I have to get one for my #8. www.leevalley.com/en-us/shop/tools/hand-tools/planes/blades/42607-stanley-record-bench-plane-blades-made-by-veritas?item=05P3127 I have a reprint of a book written by Record called "Planecraft". Recommended if you see this for sale. Pg 45 shows the Stay-Set cap iron. I do not think this is a gimmick. I have purchased replacement blades and cap irons from Lee Valley. The cap iron is thick with a machined sharp front edge. A link so you can see. www.leevalley.com/en-us/shop/tools/hand-tools/planes/maintenance-and-accessories/66868-stanley-record-cap-irons-made-by-veritas I find the Veritas cap iron to be a major improvement to my vintage hand planes. The thick steel, flat and sharp front edge prevent chips for getting under the cap iron, which was a constant frustration with the original Stanley cap irons. The Record Stay-Set may also prevent chips getting under the cap iron. Before I replaced my cap irons, I spent the time to flatten the leading edge of the original cap iron. This helped, but the thin steel flexed a lot more than the Veritas replacements. If I recall the Record blades are a tungsten steel and hardened for most of the blade, unlike the Stanley with the thin hardened edge forged into the softer steel. Dave.

Keep the usa models .as a bench joiner all my life you will never use the big planes but they are a good investment . Also look into garryflex sanding blocks very good for restoration
@TheShedProjectUK3 жыл бұрын
thanks - i have restored the 6 already and i think i will use that one as its so nice to use, the 7 and 8 not so sure but will at least have them, the USA ones demand more money but blades are hard to come by in the UK

I had a look at those blocks they are a bit pricey - do they have good long life? cheers

The blocks last a good long time on restoration of tools if you dont go at it like mad

How can you tell if they were made in US or England?
@TheShedProjectUK2 жыл бұрын
Most are marked ‘made in’ but if not if they are early ones they will be USA as British ones only started in 1930’s

Nice haul, I wish we had a good second hand market where I live. Are you keeping the 5-1/2, Rob Cosman says it is his go to plane for almost everything. Have you tried these sites for the replacement blades: www.workshopheaven.com/hand-tools/hand-planes/plane-irons-and-accessories.html , or, www.oldtoolstore.co.uk/replacement-plane-irons-15-c.asp

I have put the no 5 1/2 on ebay as I am going to use the No 6 - i have to sell some of them as need to get my money back (or close) - normally these planes get snapped up early at the market but the guy called me and we agreed a price up front - so I lucked out - yes blades I will have to sort out as I go - the No 8 has nothing left as far as I can see
@mm97733 жыл бұрын
I prefer the 5 to the 5 1/2, it’s easier to handle. The wider blade of the 5 1/2 gives you almost no advantage, I don’t get why people like them so much.
@TheShedProjectUK3 жыл бұрын
@@mm9773 I think it’s the added weight on wider boards maybe
