Adam, I think you should bed the action. I like Howa 1500 rifles and I like Boyd's Stocks .what I've found out was the stocks need to be bedded. A free floating barrel definitely improves accuracy.

I found WW II Mausers ('sporterized'), my Savages, and a few others to be quite sensitive to stock screw tension. The 3 Savages with poly stocks showed me this best. Also my Kimber 84 (7mm-08) shot horribly and I knew it was factory bedded. I backed out the screws and snugged 'em back up in steps. 2 1/2" at 100yd to 1 1/2", and it's ammo-fussy too.

@@johncmitchell4941 John , Last February I bought a Sporterized Mauser 98 in 3006 . The action was drilled and tapped. I have placed a time appropriate Weaver 2 x 7 scope on it . I will have to tweak the zeroing so far it's acceptable accuracy with Remington core loc.

Agree. Boyd’s stocks are fine, but really need to be bedded with something like Marine Tex or Devcon before they’re “complete”. ESPECIALLY with a higher recoiling cartridge like that 300 PRC. I’ve bedded several with JB weld which worked well, but I probably wouldn’t use that on any magnum cartridge. Use something with a high PSI crush rating.

Same in my experience. Had Howa’s in following calibers, .270, .30-06 and 6.5x55 all going into Boyds stocks. All of these were horrible until bedded, and I also added pillars. One could clearly see how the recoil lug was hammering the stock on the inside.

Mine had a real heavy , bad trigger, a peened action and a wood chip embedded in to the stock where the action fits, front action screw too long hitting the bolt so they left it loose, I fixed all that and put a better butt pad on. Spent a long time chasing zero and accuracy on that skinny barreled savage 30-06. Refined my rifle rest so the cross hairs don't move. Finally got a .675" group. Now I can shoot it three times and let it cool and do it again.

Shoot another 20 to 30 rounds and then check how the barrelled action is sitting in the stock. After you see the high and low spots from contact with the stock, you will have a better idea when bedding the rifle. I have 2 Howa 1500's. One in 300 BO and the other in 404 Jeffrey, a custom build. Great guns.

you Gotta get some good handloads in 300PRC. My Christensen Arm 300PRC does the same thing your Howa did with Hornady factory match ELD-M. Now I shoot handloaded, annealed ADG brass, 230gr A-Tips, pushed with Retumbo powder. Experimented with seating depth in 0.01" increments to find what my rifle liked best. Consistent sub moa groups now with 230gr Atips being pushed at 2920 fps MV. Its a 1,500 yard monster now. may get some 250gr Atips to try that heavy bullet for windy conditions. In my experience with one 300PRC rifle, Hornady's factory 300PRC Match is crap for accuracy. Don't know why.

I get where you're coming from, with the recent accuracy you've had out of your other rifles. I also understand that if you want to launch the 300 PRC missile, you want to launch it at long, long range and 1.5 inch groups are not ideal for that. Having worked in the Weatherby shop from 1983 to 1996, the Vanguard, made by Howa, always shot best when the barrel was bedded and bedded in the proper location. We tried and tried free floating, especially when we started the fiberglass and plastic stocks. These Howa barrels, which are highly accurate, need to be bedded. Find the right spot and you will not get near the degree of variance you experienced in this video. I also did some consulting with Howa after leaving Weatherby. They make a great product.

A couple things. 1, The rise in elevation could be from early barrel break-in and the bullets getting faster due to the reduction in friction as the new rifling gets smoother. (I don’t even know if that’s a thing) But give it a couple dozen more shots before loosing faith in the Howa. 2, CHECK THE SCOPE FOR MOVEMENT! My buddy has a 300prc Christensen that took us three sets of scope rings to get the scope to stay put. 3, I’ve known two Howa’s, both were .5” MOA. 4. It is definitely harder to get Magnum rifles to stack bullets. Most of my consistent tight shooters are sub 30-06.

Many of these comments point to why everyone should own a torque screwdriver. It’s the only way to confirm if anything has changed after those initial shots from a new rifle and scope setup. And this is especially true for the larger calibers that produce greater recoil. Pick any system and when there’s a sudden change in performance, something has changed.

Im no expert.. but I do have an addiction to everything to do with guns, bows, and hunting. The answer is it depends. Often times the reduced recoil will help you shoot better, but alternatively in some barrels it may negatively impact your barrels harmonics.. you usually just have to experiment a little to know how your suppressed rifle will shoot with your intended ammunition.

1rst thing, Unless you want a broken extractor in the near future, stop chamber loading your rounds. Howa actions are pretty bad about that. Those extractors aren't made to snap around the case head, they are made to be fed into. 2nd, I am also a big fan of bedding Boyd stocks. They are great budget stocks and you definitely get your moneys worth but just about any action is much better served with a good bedding job. And as one other poster noted, I have also found Howa actions to be VERY sensitive to screw torque values. Only action I have ever seen as sensitive was an old Weatherby I bought years ago. Damn near wrapped that thing around a fencepost. Couldn't get better than 2.5" group after 100 different combinations. Finally landed on screw tension. Once I found the correct torque (called a smith that specialized in Weatherby rifles) damned if that thing doesn't shoot .5 to .75 and will eat about anything from 180 grain to 225gr !!!

I know you kinda poo-poo barrel break in. But I always say the gun will let you know if it needs to be broken in or not. And by barrel break-in, Im not necessarily talking about complicated 1 shot, cool, clean, 2 shot, cool, clean, 3 shot, cool, clean for 40 shots or something goofy. Im just talking about shooting and cleaning in some fashion for at least 20 shots. To me going from a decent group right out of the box and getting progressivly unexplainable meh groups is exhibit-A barrel break-in needed.

I know it may be a cardinal sin, but I always use loctite blue on scope mounts and rings and torque them just to make sure they don't loosen. If u read the wheeler fat wrench instructions, their torque recommendations they reference are based on using loctite blue.

data point: (0.75+0.99+1.67)/3 = 1.14" over 9 shots isn't the selling point of all the PRCs supposed to be precision? isn't that what the P in PRC stands for??

I feel your dissapointment. Its tough to take a new rifle and have it not measure up to expectation

My time it was good to have 1inche groops, now we have snobs who think they hit an animal at a thousand yards. You still have to move that way towards the animal. Its up to you .

Only first cold bore shot counts in hunting.. never seen a deer let you take 2 shots to warm up the barrel

I have owned three Howa 1500's in different calibers.....None of them were shooters and I think the only reason people buy them is the price point.

I've noticed when I leave my ammo in the sun to shooting in the shade and letting my barrel cool down and wat temperature it is outside vs wat hornady clams there information against mine gets me better consistent results as wat u get or a little better some days in the sun do better not all the time every barrel and maker for ammo comes up different

Possible reasons. Scope mounting, improper scope contact with rings. Shift at ring to base plate. Shift at base plate to action. Action, the barrel may be coming into contact with the stock, this is a no go on the 1500. The action to stock contact point may be inefficient at the recoil lug, the 1500 uses a square style recoil lug and skim bedding is almost always required for precision work.

Some of my high powered rifles consistently start losing accuracy when they are not cleaned after 8 to 10 rounds. Maybe your rifle gets dirty fast and is dirty barrel sensitive.

While you were letting the barrel cool after your first group, was the ammo out on the bench in the sun, or did you tuck that away in the shade too? Maybe hornady's match ammo is loaded with a real tempature sensative powder and it got hot sitting in the sun. Maybe thats why the next 2 groups were high and more inconsistent 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
