I Have a 2000 Blackbird. I have been riding motorcycles for almost 50 years. Starting out on Fizzys and RD`S, and have owned 40+ bikes. I can honestly say that the Blackbird is the most comfy smooth riding bike i have ever owned. These were made when Honda were at the top of their game regarding build quality. Even at my age suffering with arthritis, i feel as though i could set off for Spain tomorrow and it wouldn`t miss a beat.

first thing, the blackbirds are designed to run hot, they have cat's in each begining of each silencer on the early 2001 onwards to 2007 and an O2 sensor on the right side in the collector under neath, just before it goes in to the 2 way split for the cans. Its desigined to run hot because it wants the cats to burn off any nasty stuff before its goes out the cans, they run on the slightly lean side 14.7 AF ratio because of the O2 sensor. the radiator are just about big enough for the motor, but they will over heat left on the side stand idling for over about 10mins especially in summer, if it goes past 118c i think the dash will start to flash and you need to turn the bike off and let it cool down you just have to live with it, it only has 1 fan. the charging system can be also a bit naff and most people fit a volt meter on the dash to keep an eye on it. change all fluids every 2 years, oil every year. you especially need to flush the brake fluid through the system every 2 years because they can be a pain in the arse when they get clogged up with the linked system. they dont need an alarm system, they have honda HISS which is an immobiliser while they dont flash light or have an alarm going off, they do require the key and chip to start them. oh and you mite just get away with fitting a new cam chain tensioner, takes about 20mins to do your self, just take your time and scrape the old gasket off the case and make sure none of it drops in as you do it.

I started watching your channel as you're one of the best channel that often talks about the ZX14, the bike I've had a chance to buy - funnily enough I currently ride a CBR1100XX. Would love to hear how you think the bikes compare to each other! Won't make a comment on the temp of the bike, however I know the cam chain tensioners are a common problem on the Bird. I replaced my tensioner with the part; '14520-MCC-602'. It's not the part number that'll show up in the manuals for the Bird, but from my understanding it's an improved part over the original part (thankfully the tensioners going aren't as big of an issue unlike on the VTR! Honda has some questionable quality when it comes to tensioners) Loving the videos, and great to see a Blackbird on the channel!

Hi! I also have Blackbird 2002 EFI model. I ride all year put 30 k km in just 1 and a half years. Had the same problem with overheating... not just heating to 107, it got to 120 121 in city traffic in summer 40 C outside temp real fast. Only soluttion is to drive above 100km/hour to keep it at 100C. Replaced the thermostat OEM, coolant, radiator cap Mishimoto 1.3bar, also replaced the radiator with a handmade one thats wider by .5 cm. And added and front fender extender to protect the radiator. You will never manage to keep this bike cool like a 'normal' one, thus my motive for wanting to sell it.. ITs very good in winter at - or 0C outside temp tho, always starts at buton. Installed LSL handlebar conversion kit so i sit more upright and the heat doenst blow on my chest now+ JAWs footpeg lowering kit, bike has almost 100 K km.

Great video, congratulations. I have a 2003 BB EFI model with 118,000 kms./73,000 miles and even with the stock suspension and brakes it is the perfect motorcycle for me. Some frequent timing belt tensioner changes until the brand used up its old stock, the new ones last much longer, new fork seals for slight leaks, a little more density in the fork oil and new conical steering bearings, and that is all in these 21 years. Quality levels that do not exist today that prevent me from considering the remote possibility of changing it for anything else. That is the only defect it has, that it is extremely difficult to find something better and the illusion of changing it disappears. It is the same, in exchange you get endless happiness.

What a machine the Blackbird is! I had a 2000 model until 2yrs ago, at 66 yrs old I needed something a bit more upright!! RE: the overheating, if the cooling fan(s) are working okay is it probably the radiator that is corroded up, a fairly common problem on the Bird, you can get a Chinese made replacement way cheaper than OE and has a slightly bigger surface area for better cooling and it still fits perfectly!

Still, as a zzr fan & lifelong kawasaki owner, i like the Blackbird and rate the build quality higher than kawasaki’s…. the panel fit on the Honda is just better, more solid. But then again i still prefer the zed, especially the incredible 1100.

Had 3 BBs, they are renowned for running hot in traffic, fan cuts in @ 102 degs, in high ambient conditions my previous bike hit 118 degs when stuck in traffic in a German city (then the air temp was 38 degs). Soon as bike gets rolling it comes back down, all due to aerodynamics and fairing design restricting air flow to rad when stationary.

The ethos of the Blackbird realy goes back to the latter half of the 70's. When Japans answer became "make the engine bigger" - if you want to put that onto the shoulders of one bike, it would be the CBX 6.

I still have my 2001 Blackbird (Candy Apple Red). It has 66,680 miles on it, and I am the original owner. Not one day have I regretted buying this bike, and it still runs as smoothly as it did 23 years ago. There two issues that this bike is known to have... 1. The Cam Chain Tensioner had to be replaced. 2. The Regulator Rectifier also had to be replaced. Other than that, no issues at all. As long as you keep up with the regular oil changes (I changed it every year or 5,000 miles - whichever came first). Honda's reputation for excellent build quality is certainly well deserved. With that said, I recently bought a new 2023 ZX-14R. This bike is an absolute beast! The first thing I noticed when I rode it was the power. I thought to myself "Holy Crap, this bike practically wants to rip itself out from under me!" While the Blackbird is a powerful bike, the power delivery is more relaxed, and has bit of a flat spot in 2nd -3rd gear at around 70 mph. However, once the upper gears and the RPM hits 7000, there is a noticeable boost in power. The ZX-14 has a more linear power delivery and just pulls throughout the entire power band. For me, the main differences are... 1. The Honda riding position is more comfortable. The handle bars are a little higher, and the foot pegs are slightly lower. 2. I prefer the digital speedometer of the Honda. Much easier to read, day or night. The numbers on the ZX-14 analog speedometer are a bit small and the information on the LCD screen are sometimes difficult to see in bright daylight. 3. The Honda's fuel holds slightly more fuel. 4. The Honda is MUCH easier to work on. Changing the spark plugs can be done in about 30 minutes. I know changing the plugs in the ZX-14 will be a pain in the ass. 5. The seat of the ZX-14 is more comfortable. 6. Absolutely no storage space under the seat of the ZX-14. The Honda has a little. 7. Adding frame sliders is easier on the ZX-14. 8. The big ass headlight on the Honda works well, but I absolutely love the looks of the multiple headlights on the ZX-14. 9. This may just be a guy thing, but knowing you have one of the fastest bikes on the planet is just cool. 10. I wish Honda had a replacement for the CBR1100XX. If they made a CBR1300XX, I probably would not be writing on this page now. 11. I wish Kawasaki updated the ZX-14. The instrument cluster is a bit dated. I whish it had a color TFT display. This bike has basically stayed the same for about 10 years. Even the Hayabusa has had a couple of generational updates. 12. The fuel "Range" indicator on the ZX-14 is absolute crap and should not be relied on. One minute it says I have 110 miles left before running out of gas, a couple of minutes later is says I have 74 miles left. The fuel gauge if fine.
@killernugget97Ай бұрын
the range indicator goes off how much fuel you've been using over the last minute or so rather than your average. so pootling in traffic then jumping onto the motorway will cause it to change its estimate (usually for the better) , it should be used as a rough guide either way since you fill up when light go blinky.

Blimey, I posted on your video on the ZZR1400 and how it's the only bike I'd swap my Blackbird for but it would still kill me to do so because I love my 'Bird! I've been with the Mrs. on the back with full luggage for trips through France and Ireland and Scotland and Wales and still managed to overpack with the panniers and top box, plus we are both jobbers and the bike didn't care about our weight or the weight of the luggage. The ONLY issue is when going around corners a bit quick, with the added weight, it runs out of ground clearance a bit quickly. On my own, I've scraped the fairing around corners because it's THAT stable. You can hit a pot hole when leaned over and the bike just stays on line. Yes, it's big, and fat and doesn't have sportsbike clearance or handling, but it's as stable as a rock, and with a bit of muscle can be thrown around happily. I prefer my fat old girl to sportier bikes as in comparison they feel flighty and unstable, unlike my rocketship barge. I added extra heavy fork oil and a 10mm spacer to beef up the front end and stop fork dive and put a new shock in as it was knackered. The engine heat is normal. In traffic and when stationary, it gets hot and in summer in cities going slow, the fan will kick that heat up at you, but as soon as you can move a bit, it cools down. The only thing that ever seems to go wrong often is the reg ec as they get hot and burn out, so replace with a nice MOSFET one and you are good to go. Unlike the 'Busa, these things are really kind to sprockets and chains and tyres, and I've done 30,000+ miles on my current chain and sprockets, and thanks to a scottoiler, they are both fine. The chain is getting to the end of it's life but there's no rust, stiff links or overt stretching, and there's zero hooking on the rear sprocket. One improvement I made was sticking a sproket with 2 extra teeth on the rear to help accelleration, and though it no longer hits 180, I'm not arsed because I don't fancy prison anyway. Tyre pressure matters mightily on these though. If the rear drops below 40psi, or the front below the specified 42, it will feel bloody awul, like something is broken. I've never ridden a bike where tyre pressure is so critical to how the bike feels if off by such a small amount. All in all, I love my bike and cannot wait for your zzr comparison and the reviews you will do. I've covered 80,000 miles and the engine is perfect. Fantastic over-spec and over engineering by Honda in it's hayday.

Take a look at the thermostat, maybe it is locked shut and impeding flow. But then, on the move, the temp goes down really fast so maybe it is just some radiator blockage from old coolant sediment. For the price you got it, Id do a bit of an economical sacrifice and order everything new: timing chain and tensioner kit, thermostat, radiator cap (this little piece is cheap, you can get it from china or even amazon for less than 5€ and it has some really important functions, not just being a cap) and all fluids. Also, take a good look at the condition of the coolant hoses with it getting so hot, my VFR coolant hoses are shot and breaking down slowly leaving sediments on the coolant, so that may be causing you some radiator blockage, so when you go and replace the coolant take a water hose and flush the system for a couple of minutes so all the crap is expelled out. Anyways, congratulations on your purchase :))) Cheers!
@markpearce5793Ай бұрын
Talking about the engine temp going up. I had a CBF1000 which did the same thing. It wasn't fitted with a temp gauge, so I can't say how hot it got, but the fan was forever cutting in riding in traffic and it gave off a lot of heat. That said in 3 years and 10k miles it never gave any problems due to that, so it could just be typical of big Hondas.

I really don’t see any reason to get a Bird when the VFR is a better bike, both are undervalued for sure

I know what you mean. Have ridden both and whilst the VFR is indeed an incredible bike with one of the best soundtracks ever instilled in a motorised device of any type, I definitely prefer the Blackbird. Each to their own and all that, but the two are different enough for me to prefer the Blackbird by a lot, though I would rather hear that V4 sound.

Same for me, I’ve owned both and the VFR just felt a bit flimsy. I also had the 750 before

C'mon man, you've mentioned the price like 5 times but haven't mentioned tank range/mpg??
@cavalier-y3rАй бұрын
normal road riding 45/50mpg, range 200mls (considerably less when gunned, like anything with an engine)

In your opinion, which is the best Bike , The Honda Blackbird or the ZZR 1400 ???? Please let me know and why ???
@jameskelsey1907Ай бұрын
I own both bikes. They are different so difficult to pick one over the other. Up against a wall, I’d go for the Bird as it feels more refined but then the rush of the 14 is so addictive 🙄

@ over the last 25 years I have owed 3 Blackbird’s and Currently have one now , but I am thinking about getting a ZZR 1400 . Can’t make my mind up , Love the Honda Blackbird though 👍👍

My mate has had his ZZR1400 for 18 months and last week I just picked up a Blackbird. Bad time of year for getting the bikes out but hopefully we can do some good miles next year for comparison purposes obviously!!
