While we usually focus on computer towers or individual components, there are some bargains to be had on full PC setups. So if you have a tiny budget and need a complete computer, including monitor, keyboard, mouse and Windows, what can you expect at the lowest end of the market?
Thanks for watching :)

The only integrated graphics solutions that came close to the GeForce 210/8400 were the GeForce 9400 IGP and GeForce 320 IGP (both part of the Ion platform and used in some Core 2 Apple products from late 2008 until everything moved to Sandy Bridge). Maybe the ATI Xpress 3200 as well, but I’m not sure it supported DX10.

I build a Athlon II X3 435( with a 4th unlockable core)+ motherboard and a GTX 465 for about 50 euros, I used a HDD I basically got for free with some ram I also got for free, a case for 10 bucks and yeah the psu I initially got for free but I had a really loud pop when I was overclocking, and after swapping out some parts it appears the psu might have died. I'm gonna try it in a couple of minutes and see if that thing works again it's some old generic PSU that gives 450W which should have been plenty for the set up, it uses around 350-380W max if I recall correctly. Also I think it's probably dead I've had bad stuff with computers before but it was hella loud and yeah luckily nothing but that got damaged everything else is running as it Should. But ignoring the hick ups it's still really good for gaming ( less good for general usuage cuz if the hdd but a SSD would definitely fix that.) I can play most games on medium settings around 60fps( kinda depends what game exactly but deep rock galactic runs with medium and ultra settings ( textures in ultra the rest in medium). It did get a bit more expensive but the psu but before that it was a great deal. Still is a fun build though

One of my older PCs also is a Core2Duo system, I'm still using it sometimes when my main PC is disassembled for upgrades and I just need a rig for everyday-usage until main rig is ready-to-go again. I have a half dozen of these in my basement. Got them free from the library. Tech support didn't know how to clean them out, so they would pull them when they stopped. E recycling isn't that popular around here so they had an issue getting rid of them. I found out about them and scored them, plus some other oddities. Issue I have is bios lockdown. Keep kids safe stuff and a few even have USB lockouts. My hobby got tougher. Lol. Keep up the great work.

I have one of these I am using as a media machine on a TV, but it could, in fact, be used for light gaming if you upgrade/mod it a bit. I flashed a custom BIOS on mine and installed a cheap quad-core Xeon along with 8GB of DDR3 RAM. I added a $5 Radeon HD 7450, that I have a few of lying around anyway, for some basic graphics output. It can actually run some old or simple games OK, despite being an aging, weaker OEM card. It's only 25w, so besides fitting in the half-height slot, it can run off the low MB PCIe power. I would suggest something else though if intended for light gaming, perhaps the Nvidia GT 1030 variant with DDR4 RAM. While inferior to the normal GT 1030, it only requires 20W draw from the PCIe slot.

Boards from the 760/960 give you a q45 chipset with DDR2 support (8GB max), the 780 gives you a q45 chipset and DDR3 support (16GB max), and the 980 is a soclet 1156 board that is a direct fit and supports 16GB of DDR3. I don’t remember on the 760, but the 780 board and 980 I have both support up to 75 watt cards (my 980 has a Radeon R7 250 in it). there may be a latch to pul back in order to re-seat the side panel. IIRC, it may be built into the padlock loop (the piece f metal with a hole on chassis and panel). I work in IT repair, 20+ years now, these were pretty standard machines for the state of CT, and again iirc, that side panel needs a lever that is hidden as part of the mechanism for locking up the case.

You can remove the DVD drive and replace it with an SSD using a laptop ODD adapter, and you can replace the CPU with a modded Xeon 3300/5400 series from AliExpress for anywhere between $5 and $20. The X3363 is the most compatible, and the E/X5450 is the best value; just make sure you avoid the 400 MHz FSB models that end in 2, and remember to update the BIOS.

This was my exact PC until a few months ago. All I had to do was swap in a quad core processor, eight gigs of ram, and an old 1 gig 9800 GT and it ran most games up until a few years ago just fine. All told the set up cost me about $85 and served me well for about five years while I was low on cash.

Ha, I have one of these under my TV as a HTPC, i added a hd5450 to help with the media decode and that was about everything i needed for streaming stuff. Protip: For upgrade path they do actually support the Q6600 but only the SLACR 95w version, but it does mean you can go up to 4 cores which does make games like CSGO a lot less of a lagfest.

Had a lady bring in an old dell inspiron with an e5400 processor and 4gb of ram asking for it to be upgraded to windows 10. it's actually surprising how snappy these old machines can be (all things considered). Especially once you disable animations and superfetch.

About that 25W PCIe limit - I've read somewhere that it's related to add-in cards other than GPUs and you can put one in safely. I've yet to test that on my HP dc5800 which also has this printed on the MB, but so far 8600GT wasn't giving any issues.

My current pc is running a I5-4690k, gtx 980, 16gb ddr3 @1600mhz and for those main components (including case, mobo, hard drive and a small 60gb ssd) only cost me £250! Incredibly happy with the performance for my money and they are still going strong today built the system nearly 2 years ago and it still has a good few more years left in it!

I remember selling something similar to this, but it had an AMD Athlon 64 x2 3800+ which I think would have been a good CPU for 2006. I remember putting 4 gb ram and an AMD Radeon hd 7450 graphics card. Probably good for some very light casual gaming as well as office work and general music and video playback.

Back in 2015 I bought an Optiplex 780 SFF from Amazon with E7500, 1TB HDD, 8GB DDR3 and a HD5450 for £100. Used it as my main system with two monitors for about 3 years and upgraded to a 4600 i7 ThinkCentre. Optiplex was brilliant, hard drive died, but I stuck an SSD in and it got even better, still have it and still runs very well, although doesnt get used much now. Be careful putting a C2Q in, I tried that and it wouldnt run right and they get stupid hot.

Avoid anything older than a 755, they all seem to have capacitor bloat issues. However the 330 seems to be ok. I have a 330 that's been modded to take a Xeon E5440 and it works great, except for having 2 ram slots only. The 7 series seemed to mostly have 4 slots.

These Dell business PCs last forever too. We use them at work and they have to live in some hideous environments but they keep on truckin'. Specifically the Optiplex XE models, you can throw them out of a moving bus, dust it off, and it would be fine.

The trick with these is is to find the ones with the i7 3770 in. 8 threads some have 16gb ram in. Pcie 3 and sata 3. However get the normal tower as the low profile stuff costs more in parts.

That's a pivot Monitor, I had one in a smaller size (I think it was 15" and 1024x768) - the advantage is that for full page view of PDFs, you can get a larger and more detailed display by pivoting and using the Windows rotate key shortcuts

if you want some free sound to go with that, most of the dells have a speaker in ( i have the same model ) windows wont detect it, or driver apps for some reason ? but you can find it on dells website, tho dont use the installer, it says o/s not know ? just unzip and then point device manager at it ! :)

Not bad at all, especially that it has a mouse, keyboard and monitor included, and a wi-fi adapter :) That was probably an older Wi-Fi 802.11n 2.4GHz only adapter (I have a few myself) which is fine for most things. Of course if you want the best performance and don't want Ethernet, use a PCI card, not that you'll fit one in that case! The mouse looked to be a modern HP (my university has loads of those HP laser mice) but I'm not liking the Windows XP based clunky keyboard! That would have to go. And the legacy Dell monitor? Ok for the basics. Not my preferred type of monitor (not widescreen), but it'll do :) Good deal for £50 there, and can't believe the GT210 came in handy :D

This will ACTUALLY support a firepro wx4100 card which is pretty close in performance to an rx560 turning this into a pretty capable gaming rig at least for esports titles like CS:GO, especially with the aforementioned core 2 quad thrown in...you also have the option of using an x-series Xeon as the bios has built-in support for those too...I know because I got one of these absolutely free, maxed out the ram to 8gb ddr2 that I had laying around, threw in the wx4100 with 4gb video mem and an x3370 Xeon and honestly not bad at all for the price! It'll run most of the latest games believe it or not, great value even in 2020 and I did all this WITHOUT changing the power supply too!!!
