I bought for my daughter a 2003 Element EX , 135k , orange , one owner , all services done by the Honda dealer, only thing fixed was the driver bottom seat , took it to the upholstery shop , paid $125 and got a new seat cover identical to the original , I hate aftermarket removable seat covers, I upgraded the radio and speakers, my daughter love it 😆

My used 2006 was doing the same when I bought it and another guy with an Element that worked at Auto Zone told me to get an oil change and that was it too. Recently my front was damage and the insurance wanted to give me $4400.00 to total or $3300.00 to keep which I did and added $1000.00 and now it's great. It's in perfect condition and clean.

Just found an 06 with 155k miles in no rust condition in Delaware and funny thing is, is that it was used as a cable company car from red bank n.j. and it had similar lettering on it. Other than the 1st n 2nd gear solinoid needing replacing,because of a little jerking motion as you came to a stop,which my brother found in a cali. Junk yard for$30 it runs like a dream machine.Ya gotta love all the quirkiness...It's Elementary baby! Ramble on....

Thank you HMNLT (Tim, Jane, Jacob, BJ, et.al) for your exuberant and encouraging remarks on your own Toaster-mobile expediences. Two weeks ago I bought an '05 FWD/auto (red) for $ 2.3K with 267K miles and have been pretty happy with my decision. But I won't lie, I've had a few panic attacks and moments of buyers remorse; Your words have reassured me. It's really a vehicle to be proud of and I'm certainly impressed with the engineering. Everything inside works and the body's clean (two dings, no wrecks, no rust). It really suits my style... Plus, my dog thinks I bought it for her, with 3 seats lying flat she can own the whole interior at window level. Current status: In spite of the high mileage the cylinder compression was good (155-165). I did an oil change and a valve adjustment * Then I drove it 180+ miles on a single trip to clean it out, holding my breath-fearing the sound of a sucked valve, but it ran great. PHEW! So far so good. I'm going to do another oil ch. ** and valve adj. in a week or so at 500 miles and retest the compression. Think good thoughts for us! * with Seafoam engine cleaner, and Restore engine conditioner (oil additives) because it was filthy under the valve cover. It seemed to have had only two oil changes in the last 70K miles and the #2 cylinder's exhaust valves had NO clearance :( ** with no additives, just Mobile 1 synthetic oil
@HMNLT
@HMNLT 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you found some use in my videos. Sounds like you bought a real trooper of an element. As far as doing another 'flush' I'd wait till the 2000 mile mark. Synthetic oil already has a lot of detergents that will clean the engine, too much cleaning and you may clog your oil pump and VTEC components. Run it as is for 2k miles and monitor the oil the comes out. If it's not full of gunk, skip the second round of additives and just change the oil and filter. Use Honda filters because they have more surface area and are only $6. Good luck with the E.

@@HMNLT Thanks. I re-adjusted the valves (a few had tightened) and the compression came up to 165-170, so I'm a happy camper!

Don't forget to adjust your valves, pretty easy to do only takes a couple hours. If you don't do it the exhaust valves get tight and eventually burn the seats and then you need to do a head job. Honda was really the only company that you had to adjust the valves on. A lot of people don't realize that you're supposed to do it

I think you got lucky with the V-tech replacements! What a headache! I started out like you, and had the same problem afterward. Ended up having to replace the rocker arm thingy? Obviously, I didn't do the work. My Element was a lot like yours, in that it had sat for about a year. My nephew, the ace mechanic, took it and went through it with a fine toothed comb. After replacing dry rotted power steering hoses, struts and all sorts of stuff, it runs and rides like a new car. Mine's a 2007, and while I wasn't crazy about it at first, after all the work, I'm in love! It's delivered thousands of packages for Amazon, and I can't wait to go camping this fall! One of us!!❤ Oh, and I took mine through an unintentional mudding adventure delivering a package to a guy whose "driveway" (I use that word very loosely), was a single lane, between barbed wire fences, easily a foot deep in mud. You'd think we'd get a heads up, but nope! He had a 4 wheel drive pickup and was fully prepared to pull me out, but the Element pushed through like a champ!

Owned ours (2005 EX AWD) for 10 years now. Wife loves it and never wants to get rid of it. 240k miles and it’s starting to show it’s age in the drivetrain. Slower to accelerate and passing is a joke. But she doesn’t want to get rid of it. We have a check engine code now too. Haven’t gotten it scanned yet. Own an FJ too. If I HAD to keep only one, it would be the Element. Better overall utility, mpgs, etc.
@HMNLT
@HMNLT 3 жыл бұрын
Don't let slow passing be any indication of age/wear and tear, these things were slow from new but as dependable as a hammer. Get the code scanned, could be your VVL solenoid which would affect your i-Vtec and thus your acceleration.

I have an '06 element that I'll be selling soon. When I started doing my own oil changes I noticed that supertech brand oil filter that Walmart recommended in their little kiosk for the Element was a lot smaller than the stock Honda one. So I opted for the Mobil 1 filter which was the same size as oem. I am no expert so I really couldn't tell you how a different size oil filter would affect an engine.
@kettlenaut7988
@kettlenaut7988 10 ай бұрын
Most likely would effect oil pressure which maybe over a really long time of use could cause damage IF that actually translated to certain parts of the engine not getting proper lubrication during operation. then again it might not have done anything negative, the oil is still flowing and filtering, it may just be the filter doesn't last as long because the filter is smaller hence the material used for the actual filter will be less surface area due to a smaller volume. But otherwise it probably hasn't done anything bad, and it would probably have had to have gone thousands and thousands of miles through many of those filters for it to do any real damage. So you are probably fine :) how much you want for it LOL

NJ Element owner broken hearted. After being serviced by the Dealer for all 16 years, my 2004 Element is undriveable. These are the comments I got from when it was in the shop recently... "As noted next step in diagnostic is to teardown the engine and perform a compression test as the starting issue can be caused by low compression. Engine torn down, and monitored compression in all cylinders. Results: CYL 1 - 100, CYL 2 - 90, CYL 3 - 90, CYL 4 - 80 (NOTE: I was told that 150 is the number needed for optimum compression) This is low compression but still drivable at this time but will worsen. But if and when it worsens, will require an engine replacement with a short block or salvage engine. Injectors can be another possibility but they passed tests today. Reassembled as per tech. To avoid a replacement engine would start thinking about replacing this vehicle or can ride it out till worsens (no timetable though)." As an Element lover, I'm encouraged by seeing videos like this where they don't have to die an early death (I only have 170K miles)... Given what the mechanics described about its condition and prospects, could they possibly have missed something that would get it back on the road and not require major engine work/new engine? Thanks for any info/guidance you could impart!
@HMNLT
@HMNLT 3 жыл бұрын
Casey Jones? Driving that E, High on..OCTANE! Casey Jones you better watch your E! Sorry I couldn't resist! If you didn't get the reference its from Grateful Dead. Anyway! You do have low compression, but its not horrible. The mechanic's notes are fine, but he cannot predict how quickly it will worsen. Did they perform a leak down test? If so get those numbers. The k24 motor is very stout and those numbers wouldnt scare me from buying and driving your car. If the E is running and driving fine, and starting does not exceed 5 seconds worth of cranking (mississipi seconds) keep driving it, you should get another 30-50k from it. Take it to a local reputable honda mechanic (non dealer) and present the results of your compression and leak down tests. Ask their advice, get a price quote from them, and drive it till it needs a rebuild or till you've saved up enough. In the meantime, give GD a listen and drive on!

Here is my two sense on this since I had a new '05 manual and now have a 2010 auto with 80,000 miles ('09 last yr for the manual). The manual was much more fun and responsive to drive, especially in the mountains. Downshifting in an auto is totally different compared to a manual Element. There are advantages to the newer E's but I wish I kept my 05. Liked the seats better for a number of reasons in the 05 and if you camp a lot the 06 and earlier E's with the manual are the way to go.

You create an account on their website, as a basic member you can only bid on donated vehicles, which this honda was. Becareful though, any vehicle with a line on driver side lower section of the windshield means it does not start or drive. If it has a capital “D” means it runs and drives. Also the sellers are known to bid up their units so be mindful of that as well and dont overpay!

from everything i read, the honda elements are horrible on gas, but you said yours is great. How? lol. I really want to get one as a daily driver (which will also have to do some cross country trips every now and then) but im afraid of to because of gas mileage.
@HMNLT

It depends on you perspective on 'horrible on gas' they regular get between 20-25mpgs combined. Highway you will average close to 25-27.

Im searching for one, but would never buy over 200,000mi even for a grand. Because its a money pit that never ends. I know, I bought a 02 Subaru with less than 100. Money pit for 6 years, but had to jeep on the road to get to and from work. Still have it.
@HMNLT
@HMNLT 3 жыл бұрын
The only Honda money pits have an si badge and a glasspipe muffler, and the only reason they require a lot of money is because the owner keeps trying to 'Soup' it up. As far as your Subaru, any Subaru with a 4 cyl boxer before 2010 had the crummy headgasket failure, and several other issues with windows, axles and wipers.

HMNLT I wouldn’t say “amazing”, I would say “tolerable “. On the highway our 05 gets about 22. No lifts or heavy tires. Pretty much as Honda made it. In comparison my 07 FJ might get 16 going downhill with a tailwind. My 04 Wrangler gets 18. But the surprise is my 07 Suburban. 5.3 V8 and I used to get 23-24 on long trips. Abysmal around town though (13 mpg). Loved it but had to get rid of it - its engine was going to need a rebuild and didn’t want to put that kind of money into it.

Hehe, It's not great on gas. Not bad, but far from great. With the mods you plan to do it will get low 20 to sub 20 MPG.

But you went from a 5-speed to an automatic. For some, that is a downgrade! Can't get any kind of an SUV these days except a Jeep Compass with a standard transmission.

Andrew Macdonald driving a 5 speed element was fun, but too tedious for such a slow car. I much rather prefer the automatic. Helps retain the comfort and functionality honda was going for when they built this toaster

@@HMNLT Certainly it's a pesonal preference kind of thing but automatics don't last as long as standards. Gets better fuel economy though. In any case $1400 is one heck of a deal for one of these with 4WD. FYI, Elements in Canada fetch north of $2000 for fixer-uppers/parts cars. None exist in the scrap yards.

Great Information!! I found a CraigsList 2007Element SC for $4000. My Mechanic reworked the suspension and entire brake components for $1800. He did a LOT of Tightening and checking everything as He , the "Automotive Artist" does. Peace of Mind!! I can change oil but that's about it. After the New Year I will take it in for a minor tune-up, valves etc and one Hub replacement that is moaning at me softly. I just love the entire Element Concept. I need to find some "courtesy lighting" turns on when the door opens and dims after the door closes. This only has manual lights. Any ideas? THanx Again.
