I have a Kore for passengers, very similar to the rugged air. I’ve had no issues with them. I started out with David Clark’s then moved up to Lightspeed Zulu 3’s. I love the Lightspeeds, but occasionally they don’t seal well around my sunglasses. I have tinnitus as well, mine from years of duck hunting without ear protection (dumb move in hindsight), the ANR’s were a breath of fresh air. I like the honest review and non-silly stuff occasionally, your channel is a hidden gem in aviation!

They do have "tall" ear paddings from lightspeed which I found help with the sunglass seal. Basically the padding is slightly thicker.

Nice video Bryan! Good to see you flying the Comanche. I bought some cheap headsets off ebay when the family started flying with me. They were ok... one has started having the insulation come off the wires, the other had some scratchy sound and would break squelch often. I've moved up to DC's for the spares, again off ebay for around $150-$200 for H10-13.4's so a pretty good deal. I didn't think to tell you to add one of your "Heels on the floor" clips in there so that people would know it was actually you on the video and that you haven't been abducted.😂

I like them pretty well. One of these days I'll move up to a Lightspeed, but these allowed me to get my whole family into the plane without breaking the bank. The plane takes care of that.

Being an old fart, the first tangible symbol I bought when I was a student pilot was an aluminum E-6B. Back then we didn't use headsets, because we didn't know any better. After all, there was a perfectly good speaker in the headliner and a handheld microphone, What more did we need? I still have my whiz wheel and my plotter (both Jeppeson Sanderson), although the plotter is getting pretty yellow as the plastic degrades with age. I, myself, am degrading with age so I can't really fault the plotter.

Great post Bryan, thanks for the info. Like you, so many commenters are saying they have tinnitus, so they bought themselves a nice ANR headset and threw the cheap sets in the back for the kids. Think about this for a moment - you have tinnitus, you know how you got it, and you know how annoying (and debilitating) it is. But you’re OK with your kids wearing cheapo headsets and getting hearing damage at a young age?? If you’re regularly flying long-distance trips with your kids (or even short ones), please please please consider spending a few bucks on a GOOD set of headsets and consider all the future medical bills and hearing and headache issues and even learning disabilities that you’ve avoided for your kids. Believe me, your kids are going to ruin their hearing anyways with their ever-present phones and overly-loud ear buds…. But please don’t add to the damage. Thanks for ‘listening’. (BTW, I too was waiting for the backwards-recording voices coming out of the headsets when you were testing them! - maybe you can make a “part 2”, cutting-room floor version of this!). LOVE your videos!

You don't need a headset, all you need is an audio in jack on your aviation transmitter. Plug in your mp3 player, fire up your play list, and watch them dancing as you buzz the tower upside down in an outside loop. I mean, I thin that's what they're doing in there, dancing. Sure are moving around frantically a lot. Never seen a dance like that. Freestyle!

Saw your post on the Student Pilot FB page a couple days ago and have been waiting for this video. I purchased a set of Rugged Air when I got back into flying in 2020 and they have served me very well. Actually just recently purchase a pair for my wife for when she goes with me. We are still renting planes, so it is a cost affordable option for a very good headset. I actually purchased a small BT receiver and have it plugged into my AUX port via cable that I use to make phone calls on the ramp and also have it paired to my Ipad for ADSB warnings. All in all, a very good set up that is currently working for me! Until I hit the LOTTO of course and then make the jump!! Thanks for the video!! Fair Skies and Following Winds!!

I just started as a student pilot (12 hours) For my intro flight I borrowed a friend’s A20’s which let me taste the gold standard and decided I might as well get the good stuff too since I’ll need them eventually. Well the good stuff has been on back order for a while so to get me by till then I ordered a pair of these. I figured being less than a tenth the price they’d be garbage. While they certainly aren’t as quiet they’re perfectly adequate for my little piper archer. The radios come in perfectly clear and even after a couple hours of touch and gos they felt very comfortable. I’d certainly recommend them. I plan on keeping mine as a back up / passenger pair.
@themaverickproject45772 жыл бұрын
Something you said about damaging hearing is very true. Cheep headsets do not reduce noise enough to save hearing over time. BUT, for that occasional friend as a passengers they might get away with a flight or two without long term damage.

Good video. I went through 2 cheap headsets in flight training before I decided I needed ANR for clarity, in the form of Bose A20s. Made a big difference. Later a friend decided he wanted to fly, I said buy a headset to show commitment. Eventually, he decided flying wasn't for him and sold his 2 hour A20s to me for $500. Great video! I will say this though, I was struggling with my radio work as a student and when I got an ANR headset I found it way easier for whatever reason. So, if you're a student and you're struggling with radio work, try your instructors ANR headset for a flight and see if it helps. If it does, pony up and get one (used is ok for sure), if not, no biggie and use that cash for your XC!

I just got my license yesterday. I was considering these but ended up getting a mid-range Faro set with ANC, and I'm very glad I did. I don't necessarily mind loud things, as evidenced by my unhealthy number of vintage motorcycles. But man, figuring out what the HECK a controller or foreign exchange student from the Shoulder Stripes Academy just said on the radio is already hard enough with the noise cancellation. Forget about PDX's unintelligible Stephen Hawking ATIS. That said, now that I've got my license and I can start taking friends and family up... well they get the cheap seats. Lol.

I knew I'd be continuing in aviation so I got a Zulu3, but I bought 2 more Rugged headsets so my daughters each had their own (which they decorated with stickers) and the original is a spare. Sorry Rugged is all “budget” level stuff. They take some of the cheapest radio stuff that you can buy with Chinese names like Baofeng, then they just change the brand stickers and double the price. Maybe their headsets are good enough to last a while just being used by kids in the back of a Comanche for a few hours a month - hey if they work for you, great. I too sometimes look for cheap stuff to fill a short term need. Just don’t kid yourself about what Rugged is selling. I don’t know what their status with the FCC is now - they were busted a couple of years because several of their radio models (maybe their entire line) weren’t legal to sell in the U.S.

When I fly with my friends locally, they both have 100$ headsets (aSa and Rugged) in all of the jacks of their C-150, 206, and RV10… I do notice a lot more ambient noise… but it is all they use and they are in their 70’s. I do bring my Lightspeed Sierras if it is preplanned… My first CFI wanted me to purchase my own headset; my current CFI has Bose in the left seat and forbids the unplugging. 😎. (Actually, on my long cross countries I wear mine. He just doesn’t want the headsets plugged and unplugged everytime a different person gets in/out of the rental plane… so $98 wet includes Bose ANR).

My "training" headsets were so bad it actually started to form bad habits. The problem was the Mic did a terrible job of filtering out background noise, so every time I tried to call Tower at decent power setting, they could barely hear me. I wouldn't. I am just now transitioning to a complex aircraft and it feels like a lot on takeoff and landing with the gear and prop. I have been flying since 2013. I think with all the other stuff going on when learning, it might increase the opportunity for a gear up. I think during learning, the simpler the better. Or, buy a mooney but take your first 5-10 lessons in a 172. Things come at you very fast in high performance planes. That said, this is one of those questions that will get you different answers from different pilots. Probably really depends more on you and how you handle stress, workloads, multitasking, etc.

Thank you. In the car world, I can drive my high preformance Audi slow. I can’t drive a Yugo fast. I appreciate your comments, and from any others that want to chip in, without high jacking this thread.

Yeah, look, get the basics down pat first. This comes better in a basic plane and it also keeps the fun factor high! You are taught to fly 'ahead of the plane' therefore for most students this would be very difficult in a complex aircraft. (Basic plane owner 6 years)

When I got my PPL in October I bought two of those exact same headsets for my back seat passengers. I concur. They’re great for the occasional passenger. Bought my wife a slightly better one but will get her an even better one before any long trips.

A year late to this party, but the make or break for a cheap headset is if it gives you headaches after an hour or two. If it doesn't, it's good.

I have tinnitus as well and an ANR headset really reduced the post flight ringing.

I considered my A20 headset to be part of the cost of my training (for which I took out a loan); I played bass in a death metal band as a teen, so... RINGGGGGGGGGGGG.

I bought the Zulu Lightspeed. Hated it. They gave me a headache every time I used them. I sent them back and traded it for a DC1X

2:33 - Get that door shut. You don't want to get sucked out into the slipstream. It's a real thing.
