I've not had a standard white grapefruit for years, but I buy an Aldi pink grapefruit every other week to add to my fruit salad brunch. I can still detect the tartness but for me it's all about variety. And maybe the pink is slightly sweeter? I do about a third of the grapefruit with frozen berries, three or four other fresh fruits, a portion of dried fruit, nuts, seeds yoghurt and granola or Grape Nuts, about five days a week.

You are an inspiration. Instead of being angry at prices, you turn things on their head and prove you can live well, or well enough, being very creative. I wish I had had your genius when I was young and had three kids to make meals for. I'd end up bring home a station wagon of food. Doubt people can do that now. I'd try to make all the meals with the occasional outing for pizza but I always got the "there's nothing to eat" complaints. My god, it was difficult to feed them all.

The only way I know how to eat grapefruit is by cutting it in half and laying each half face down on a flat plate with a generous layer of sugar below then put it in the fridge overnight whilst it soaks up the sugar, was taught to eat it that way back in the 1960s by my parents.

I love how you clearly have a great sense for food, so devise a lot of seemingly strange combinations that work together really well. In fact you often have better results from the cheaper ingredients than the high-end ones. You're awesome as you are but I'd love to see you involved in collabs or challenges with several other content creators I have in mind. Great vids!

Sam, you did a really great job on those meals! The first thing I learned to cook in Home Economics was... Broiled Grapefruit.. Cut grapefruit in half and the sprinkle brown sugar on top and broil for few mins under broiler to melt the brown sugar, he was really nice. Keep close eye on it so you don't burn it.. Thanks so much for sharing, looking forward to the next video!!

I think you should exempt Spaghetti Loops from your pool of potential products. You've already bought them too many times and they're reliably awful. Some grapefruits are sweet, but the others are eaten with sugar or some other sweetener, and supreming the segments removes the bitter membrane and pith (medium effort, medium-high reward).
@hollywebster6844
@hollywebster6844 2 ай бұрын
Agree completely about supreme-ing grapefruit. I just peel and eat grapefruit like an orange, with the added step of peeling away the membrane. Messy, but delicious!

Enjoying that Sam has said he hates jacket potatoes but still comes up with a way to make them that sounds good. As someone who thought they hated jacket potatoes, turns out it depends on the kind of potato. Russets? Absolutely not. Yellow/gold? Delightful, best kind.

I would have made a bourbon base (like cheesecake base) by wazing them up, adding juice of half an orange, and baking off quickly to set, waz up some rice pudding, caramelised apple & the remainder of orange segmented & cut into small chunks, no cinnamon, & mixed that into the creamed rice pudding and top the biscuit base. I'd have saved the grapefruit for breakfast, because I LOVE GRAPEFRUIT, cut it in half, teaspoon of sugar over each half & leave in the fridge for a few hours before eating. Beautiful

Ooh what about a video buying from a butcher! I keep meaning to go in our local one & get something. My mum used to make us oxtail stew a lot as kids or slow cook joints of meat I never see in a supermarket now. I think a good butcher & my slow cooker could mean some cheap but comforting food this winter! I just don't know where to start. Fishmongers too because fish is my absolute favorite & I feel it's usually out of budget now apart from breaded & battered. Great. Now I'm hungry 😆

I think everyone has their own spag bog recipe. yours isnt bad but I bulk mine out with finely cut carrot and lentils, its amazing how far a little bit of beef mince can go with those. Also i do need to have Parmesan or maybe even mature cheddar on top to finish it off. you might even be horrified to find i often use Quorn mine, just so quick and i hardly notice the difference with a little beef stock. Great video.
