I’m still recommending the M1 air to a lot of people because of how well it works for me for video editing however the m2 air is phenomenal and is definitely worth the extra €300 over the m1 model if someone can afford it

I was excited when M2 MacBook Air was first announced, but going by reviews about chip being a letdown when it comes to power consumption, NAND slot accommodating just 1 SSD to save costs, thermal issues... I'm heavily in favour of buying M1 MacBook Air. I'll still wait for Air reviews after 15th, but I'm sure they'll be not good enough. I currently own a base model of 2019 Macbook Air, and will probably exchange it for M1 Air (16gb/512gb) and save money and retain performance.

I'd get the M1 if I were in the market for a 13. What I'd like to see is an Air 15 with 3 nm process. Maybe we get it in 2023. I am still using my 2015 MacBook Pro 15 as a backup for my 2021 MacBook Pro 16. The 2015 is still great - the only downside of it is thermals under load, especially hooked up to a 4k monitor. The M2 models have two slots, it's just that they only put one larger chip in it. I think that you can get around the problem with 512 GB.

I’m guessing the ssd issue will be the big necessary upgrade: 512 vs 256 … I have the base m1 MacBook Pro 13” and I LOVE IT .. I feel fancy now that the internet is saying the base m2 MacBook Pro 13” is 50% slower bc 1 256gb ssd instead of 2 128gb ssd .. although I fully understand that no one is manufacturing 128gb ssd’s anymore so it makes sense

I’m interested to see your review of the base M2 air. I think Apple may have attempted to cut cost a little too much and over charged for a machine with a few problems. Even though most won’t experience the problems, people pay a premium for their products and problems shouldn’t exist. Cautiously optimistic.
@Metamine0

Agreed. I get that most people won't need storage to be as fast as having two NAND chips instead of one, but consider the prices we're paying here. At 1200 bucks, we get slower storage than the M1 Air, still can't connect to more than 1 monitor, and only 8 GB of RAM with 256 GB of storage, not to mention a lower end M2. All it really has is the better design. Most people are better off getting a M1 Air and speccing it to their needs

Once yours arrives, it would be cool if you could test the possible ssd problem everyone's been talking about the upcoming M2! I wonder if it really makes that much of a difference in the overall performance. I kinda hate apple's decision on this, it's as if they're intentional crippling the machine just like some camera manufacturers are, plus increasing the price at the same time, for the sake of making their older models less subpar to their current lineup rather than striving for innovation..

Having *zero* moving parts is a huge deal. This is something that early reviewers skip and 99% of consumers don't appreciate/understand. Over and above the obvious advantage of absolutely silent operation with no exceptions, there is the fact that when it comes to the longevity of a device, having no moving parts, having no possibility of mechanical failure (except for keys and the hinge) and having no dust build-up ever, is a magnificent win. If you can possibly get by with an Air, you should choose it over a Pro. Do you really have the kind of sustained workloads that will cause it to throttle? Will you even notice? For the practical home/family user, it could be fine for ten years. For a professional, it may well be fine for five years. It's true about the two screens though. I love having one Apple 5K Studio Display, but many professionals will want a second monitor.

If it has the ssd issue this laptop will be almost worthless. It’s already 300-350 more expensive than the m1 air at its base version and adding an extra 200 for 512gb ssd to fix the slow speeds brings the price to 1,400 !!!! At that point it’s 500-600 dollars more expensive than the m1 air and In no way does this machine justify that large of a price jump. The m2 chip already isn’t that much faster than m1 and both are fanless machines. The m1 air is still the go to for anyone wanting a MacBook Air at this point in time.

There’s a big difference between ordering a laptop to test and ordering one to use. Most of us can’t afford to change in the middle of the process so we use yours and other KZbinrs results and make our best guess. Anyone who multitasks really needs to be looking at 2 to 3 times as much ram as they think they could get by with for their primary task alone. For storage, with the bottleneck that’s been revealed with the single chip SSD, I would go one terabyte as a baseline. If your M2 MacBook Air is a secondary or auxiliary machine for emails and playback then I would say get a base M1 MacBook Air and stop playing around.

I bought a base M2 Air as an auxiliary machine instead of an M1 because I want the better camera, better screen, and magsafe. So no, I'm not playing around. Those are real features that are worth the bump up in price for me, and I can afford them. I have an M1 Mac mini with a terabyte of storage (and an additional terabyte on an external drive), so I just need a good satellite machine so I can get some work done while traveling or at conventions. You really think apple only put passive cooling in because they think thats all they need.... what are you new to apple? they take shit out all the time that takes up space just to make it smaller. they don't give a shit what it needs. Razer has the same design.... how many macbooks have had the same silver design? Finally get a new different midnight color and think its a revolutionary.

Hey! The bold line is where I totally agree. Probably the first thing I did when watching the M2 MBP 13" reviews was ordering a Silver 14" base MBP. It simply makes no sense. I agree with your comments on the facts that SSD speed makes no sense when performing data transfer. But SWAP... And this is where it was a dilemma - either go with the MBA M2 16GB 256GB or invest an extra hundred into a non-binned GPU as well. If you sum those up - it's 1.5k and 14" is 1.8k on sale. I then understood that M2 is basically an overclocked M1 (akin to Ryzen 3900 vs 3900x), so having no fan in the same MBA would render a waaaay less reliable performance. Hence 14" was obvious. I think that the 256GB chip on the base models was a mistake. I also think that the cooling on the M2 MBA would not be enough. Anyway, glad you drew that bold line, since many are blissfully unaware of the gap. Keep rocking!

I picked up the 14" MBP when it launched last year, I agree with the not really using magsafe. It pretty much only serves as my travel charger, usually I'm hooked up to a monitor with power delivery. I will say it's pretty great when traveling, just yoink it off when I want to go mobile. A friend of mine will be picking up the new air at some point later this summer, looking forward to seeing it in person!

I am torn between the new m2 air or the m1 pro 14 inch. As a college student, I don't need all the power of the m1 pro and I like the portability of the m2 air, however, with the issues about thermal throtelling and slow ssds, it's making me lean more towards the m1 pro. Also, that seems like a better laptop for long-term use (7-10 years)

Yes just preordered the base model. We can’t forget that the whole point of the Air was to get an inexpensive laptop that can get your basic necessities done along with a couple pro activities. Anything more you might as well opt for the Pro models. With that extra $150-$200 in Apple tax on top of the price, this laptop is way too expensive even for the base model
@Gilamath.
@Gilamath. 2 жыл бұрын
In fairness, $200 buys you a more powerful chip with better graphics performance, a larger screen with better pixel density and brightness, MagSafe (which basically gives you an extra USB-C port), and aesthetic stuff like the new colors and design. I'm keeping my M1 MacBook Air, but if I were buying today, I'd say the extra $200 is justified and would pretty buy the M2 Air over the M1
@Ryan152103
@Ryan152103 2 жыл бұрын
@@Gilamath. You will actually have to spend an extra $100 to get the actual M2 chip that they advertised. The M2 base model chip performs just like the M1 cause it’s 8 cores rather than 10 that’s on the M2. So really it’s an extra $300 to get the actual M2 chip. The base model is just an upgraded design and camera, so yes you do get those perks which are nice. But you won’t get the M2 chip performance that Apple advertised. You will have to spend the extra $100, in addition to the $150+ Apple tax.

If Apple doesnt upgrade the contrast on this upgraded screen this will be such a shame. M1 air was a great laptop if it wasn't for trash contrast. It looked good during the day, but i couldnt bare to look at it at night =(. Nobody is talking about this but the screen on the m1 air is trash, the glossy coating saves it during the day, but it is grey as heck if you turn of the lights, even at low brightness.
