You gotta do a bit more research on the ZF 6-speed. It is known for issues, and is the same transmission found in the E65/66 BMW, your Phantom, etc, and are prone to mechatronc issues as well as the “sealed for life” transmission fluid which, despite dealer protocol, DOES need to be changed. Torque converter is constantly locked in all gears. Giubo flex disc also notorious for wear and needing replacement. The bright side? It’s all very serviceable and usually easy to catch issues before catastrophic failure. See if the fluid has ever been changed and if not, that’s a good place to start. A lot of people have had issues disappear from a fluid change. Excited to see the diagnosis from the Wizard!
@Crusher1035 жыл бұрын
yep we have one of these transmission in our E60 BMW. Solenoid issues, leaking mechatronic seals, the dreaded transmission slam. Oh there are a list of issues with the transmission. when its working, its a beautiful transmission but man it is not a reliable one past around.....80,000 miles which this Maserati has lol. I believe he has a solenoid issue already though so it will be interesting to watch this unfold.

Not completely relevant but these were used in Aussie built Ford Falcons from around 2009- first Made in Germany, later Made in China. The Ford Falcon had an external trans oil cooler which would fail and cause water to enter the transmission and destroy it. Cost of rebuild, 3k +. On cars that start at around 5kAusd now on the used car market (in sedan form, utes are worth more.) So what's my point again? Oh yeah, for once I can't blame the Germans for doing something stupid and screwing their customers (though $50 a quart for special ZF oil is ridiculous). If you keep water out of them they are a really good transmission.
@wholeNwon5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I was going to look that up, too.
@twentysevenlitres5 жыл бұрын
@@slasher9883 the Chinese licensed version (made after ZF ceased production in 2014) was a lesser rated design and used only on standard 6cyl Falcon sedans. ZF made 6hp26's were stockpiled for use in V8 (Coyote) and turbo 6cyl Falcon variants. The radiator mounted trans cooler is not a new design, but the Ford version in Falcon radiator was prone to cracking which subsequently let water into the transmission as you said. Typical Ford cost cutting.

Maseratis sound good but thats about it. Interior buttons etc look like 1999. Engine isn't even that powerful with a shitbox transmission (cool to know yours is different). Constant maintenance. That said, the price was certainly right. Color on this one is very old man.

No matter the hate for this car these days (much of it deserved), it will always hold a special place in my heart. I grew up in one of these when they first came out, still remember the smell of the fresh new italian leather and the beastly power of the ferrari f430 based V8. Often times I would wake up before school because dad would start the car in the garage and it would growl SO LOUD (sweetest sounding alarm ever). I would still like to own one just to know what my dad experienced when he had it (he passed). I still vividly remember him arriving with it for the first time at just as the sun set, still the most beautiful Maserati imo (and one of the most beautiful looking cars in general).

For example i'm pretty sure that the key is the same of my mother's 2005 Panda (with a different shell) and that quick battery disconnect is identical as the one on my 2007 Bravo.

Actually ZF has nothing to do with Mercedes. (around minute 4:30 you mentioned something like this) Mercedes builded and builds their own gearboxes, while ZF is since september 2014 part of TRW Automotive. In the carworld you mainly find the transmissions from ZF in BMWs and the BMW related branches of the modern era, in a few Audis, etc.
@aaronbays45 жыл бұрын
Chrysler uses them with the Hemi V8 in Charger, 300, Grand Cherokee, Challenger and Dodge Ram.

Fully endorse and support this decision. Always loved the look of these, it has a Ferrari V8 and the proper (somewhat) reliable auto trans. A lot of car for 8k. Here in rip-off land (Australia) same car would be 40k plus (approx 29k USD). For such a low price can afford to deal with the Italian breakages. Great purchse I think.

You’ve never owned a Mercedes if you assume they are unreliable. I own a GL450 and an S550 and getting an E400 coupe soon and the GL and S class have both been very reliable. They have only been through regular maintenance like any car, and I assume the E400 coupe I get will be just as reliable. Own a car before you say something about it that you’re not even sure about.

The transmission problem is likely either a fluid and filter change or worst case there's a solenoid failure. You can find a new valve body on ebay for a few hundred and do the filter fluid and valve body at the same time
@monkeybusiness76145 жыл бұрын
Your knowledge of Maserati is like someone who read a couple forum threads and formed a brand opinion based solely on a few bad apples. Clutches don't wear out in 10 or 20k on the Duo select (or Cambiocorsa) unless all you do is launch the damn thing from a dead stop. It's no different than a regular manual. Burn the clutch and it wears faster. Duo select also passes more power to the wheels and way more fun to drive than the ZF. Oh, and replacing cam variators is a 5hr job and costs about $200 not $10k.
