I actually didn't know these were that rare until now. I have a PDF of the 1987 GT brochure which is probably the one you showed in the video listing it with an Onan, and never really thought anything of it. Rather odd of them to list it that way knowing so few Onans were left and that they'd be switching over to Kohler. As good as the Magnums are, an Onan is always a plus in anything so thats a great find! Looking forward to seeing you do more with it this coming spring.

The brochure in the video was indeed the early 1987 brochure - it's always been a mystery to me why they listed the Onan engine when they were already gearing up to switch over to Kohler Magnums - guessing they didn't want to be sued for false advertising if someone got an Onan when they were wanting a Kohler.

A customer sent me the driveshaft assembly for rebuilding out of his Cub Cadet 2072 a few days ago. The OEM shaft bent, along with broken off blades on the fan & a damaged pilot bushing retainer flange. I'm going to replace the damaged parts & make a new driveshaft out of stainless steel. Should be super tough then!
@MichaelTJD603 жыл бұрын
Wow, I wonder what caused it to bend? Just makes you wonder what kind of life the tractor lived for it to end up like that. I looked at an 1811 one time and the driveshaft had a deep bevel cut all the way around it as if they were going to lay a heavy weld bead in the center...it looked like it was about to snap like a toothpick.

@@MichaelTJD60 Too much torque, I suppose. The factory should have installed a pillow block bearing on the driveshaft mounted on rubber (for the factory ISO mounts) on an angle steel brace welded to the frame to stabilize the driveshaft so it wouldn't bend.

It did have those brackets attached and I stupidly sold them with the 54" Haban blade. I will have to either buy or fabricate another set of them here soon. Good observation! WOW, excellent find Michael, I never knew the early 2072's came with a factory Onan engine (kind of clever on their part to use the engines they already have instead of waiting on a stock of Kohler M20's), it's just like a 1914. As far as compatible mower decks for these Super Cubs, I do believe the 46gt deck you bought for your 782 project will fit this 2072. Although it will look a little small under this tractor, I have seen one on a 1872 before, so I imagine that it'll fit this tractor as well.
@MichaelTJD603 жыл бұрын
You are right, it's basically just a 1914 with power steering and the newer style parking brake latch. Nothing really worth getting excited over, but I just think it's neat that they only made 83 of them. You are correct that the 46GT deck will fit, as they were offered as an option for these tractors. I have a 50" deck back home in NJ waiting to go on this tractor, but I think I may try the 46GT deck instead since I now have a much smaller piece of property to mow. Probably going to get a smaller deck for the 318 as well.

@@MichaelTJD60 Also, now that I'm thinking about it when you mentioned that the engine on this was governed at 3600 instead of 3450 like in the John Deere's, I actually believe that Cub Cadet was going off the Onan specs for these engines, which also specs these engines to be governed at 3600, so I'm not too certain why Deere governed them 150 rpm's lower.

I've been debating whether to install a CCC emblem on the front. What is the purpose of the wheel weights?
@MichaelTJD603 жыл бұрын
To provide better traction for snow plowing. It was common for dealers to install the 75-lb wheel weights on these Super Cub Cadets because the aluminum transaxle case made the rear end very light (as compared to the heavier cast iron transaxle used on the earlier models), and the tractors would often lose traction on slopes or when plowing snow/ice...especially the models with the heavy cast iron engine blocks like the 1872 and later 2072 (Kohler Magnum engine) and the 1572/1772 (Kubota diesel engine). It wasn't as much of an issue on the 982 and Onan 2072 because the Onan engines have an aluminum block and are not as heavy.

It's the same tractor as a 982 but with power steering...which IH never had the thought to include on that model. MTD perfected the design of these tractors before they started going downhill later in the 90's. BTW...every Cub Cadet GT made by MTD until 1998 was based off the original 82 series frame.

Yes, the original red 82 series Cub Cadets were modeled after the 88 series IH farm tractors, and the design was carried on after MTD bought the Cadet line and started painting them white and yellow again.

@@MichaelTJD60 Sadly we all know all about how the Brand Name survives ...but at the expense of ruggedness and durability . No amount of sheet metal can substitute for cast iron . Recently I went by a house that had an 88 for sale ..even though I own a Kubota loader backhoe I thought to buy it and preserve it for posterity as a piece of machinery MADE IN USA when it really meant something 😄, I managed to turn around about a mile down the road and by the time I got back to that house somebody was handing green cash to the owner ...that is what deserve for not stomping on the brakes ...😂😂 won`t happen again 😅.. congratulations to you for your find s enjoy👍
