“Sounds incredible”, I was thinking it sounds shitty. Sounds like a cheap Kids xylophone from China, which is not a good place to build sounds from. But I imagine if someone is spending around £20k on a piece of rare vintage crap then people are going to romanticise. But let’s be honest, ears are still a thing - that is a very rare vintage piece of shite.

Fortunately, it usually works out somehow, even if it wasn’t exactly what you wanted (or needed). To answer your question, I purchase when I know my upcoming gig will cover at least 50% of the cost. I often bite my nails regretting larger purchases, but it goes away once I unbox it and play around for a few hours. In the end, I’ll just say, “It brings me happiness, and happiness is worth it”. 👍🏻

Some instruments (guitars mostly) have "spoken" to me and told me "I have a song hidden inside for you!" Other times just the sheer beauty of a guitar can cause me to open my pockets and invite it into my collection,... which by most standards isn't all that much,... just reached 50 guitars and 10 assorted amps (amps tend to be a smaller collection),... but, I in fact do play them all, and most have been recorded as well.

There's a fascinating question here. Are all Rhodes Celestas? Celestas, pianos, Rhodes are all Idaphones - they work by striking a resonant body. But is the Rhodes (tine) closer to a glockenspiel or a hammered string (piano)? And does that consideration change as the Rhodes mechanism is different for higher octaves in a 'standard' MK I?

I am so calculating about buying it's amusing to some of my friends. I work out what I want equipment to do, then I spend excessive amounts of time doing research to decide what I want. Then I spend excessive amounts of time searching for the best place to buy it from, taking price into account but also checking out that I am buying from a reputable supplier who will honour the warranty without having to be taken to court (I did have to do that once to get something repaired). Having ascertained which drill bits I needed for a DIY job I once spent two hours finding them at the best price, and that two hours of research saved me a mere twenty pence over the first supplier I found online. Yep, occasionally I have bought things that turned out to be useless to me, but not very often.

I'm a type 1 consumer when it comes to buying inexpensive music software. Yesterday I purchased "InstaComposer" (an algorithmic MIDI composer) for $20. I also was able to buy a pair of demo Neuman headphones for $400 (retail is $500). I've actually pared back studio hardware. Last year I sold a Casio CZ-101 that I bought new in the early 1980's. I also sold a Roland D-550 (but replaced the function by purchasing a Roland V-Synth XT which has a perfect emulation of the D-50/550). I have a few other rack synths that I'm hanging on to. The rarest is probably a Technics WSA1-R (a physical modeling synth) but I also have a Yamaha VL1-m Version 2 (also physical modeling). The only outboard FX I still have is a Lexicon Vortex. I did add to hardware about two years ago with the purchase of a used Korg Wavedrum, which I've lusted after for many years.

Oh and to answer your question, I used to impulse buy things and I experienced what you did: not being careful enough and ending up with junk. But I didn't have as much money at the time so it was cripplingly depressing to have spent all that money on a piece of junk. As a consequence I've become the kind of consumer where a literal and figurative hole is made in my life before I buy something to fill it. Ie. I want a PS5. So I'll literally make a space for it, have the wires ready, have a list of games I really want to play, and just sit for a while observing how much that hole bothers me. Sometimes the hole gets forgotten so then I clearly know I don't need to buy the item after all.

christian, I’m a ‘20% consumer’ … that is; I add a 20% financial uplift with every purchase, I started with a low value base investment for a few key bits of gear, then upon selling those add +20% cash each time to buy the next item, never buy new, always wait for that ‘keen seller’ for a deal, make offers and always buy better that I sold, premium gear then comes with almost no noticeable financial stress, this is a 15 year journey so far but I buy & sell regularly all year…. it’s slow but worth it.

Some years ago, an orchestra (no name, no shame), borrowed my Yamaha DX7 Mark 1 for a performance of Allegro Non Troppo, the first movement from Malcolm Arnold's Second Set of English Dances Opus 33, which requires a celeste. The orchestra baulked at the cost of hiring a real celeste, and so I stepped in and tweaked the (programmed by Dave Bristow, I believe) factory preset to the percussionist's preference. The DX7 was carefully placed in the percussion section so that it was almost impossible to see from the audience, and the performance was a great success.

Christian, have you ever shared photos of the inside of the piano? I would be thrilled to see how this might differ from the typical rhodes tine x tonebar configuration, and further documenting of what might very well be a very rare instrument would be greatly appreciated. (maybe wrongfully) -I was under the impression the standard "Celeste" rhodes were the middle 3 octaves of what would be a 73 key piano, and 49 keys that consist of the top 4 were available for custom order.- BUT I have seen at least one example online that (I believe) was the top 3 + one octave higher, made by shaving down production parts, and suspect that might be what you've got here. The top several tone bars would all say 73, but be shaved down to achieve higher notes. Other than that, the rest would identical be a 60s rhodes. Would love to learn more, cheers for your work. EDIT: I got a few things wrong! I located a scan of the 1967 Fender catalog, it has a chart of which models cover which key ranges, and it seems that the 37 key celeste was the top 2 octaves of a 73 key rhodes, + one higher, and a 49 key version that consists of the top 3 +1 was the custom order (the 88 key rhodes wasn't available until the 70s, but these represent the equivalents of the top 3 and top 4 octaves). EDIT 2 : **To be clear, I beleive this is just a smaller fender rhodes. cool, rare, expensive, but not functionally any different**
