Hey Hoovie! I know this comment will likely get buried somewhere. But as a Turbo Grand Prix owner for over 10 years I thought I should chime in and offer up some advice and further information on the cars. The cars were made in 89 and 90, available in only red and black. Mine is a 89, same color combo as yours. No official production numbers were ever kept on these cars. But the most credible production numbers are 749 built in 89 and 3,750 in 90. They also produced a sedan version in 90 called the TSTE, 1,000 of these were made. The sunroof was in fact a factory installed roof and not aftermarket. It was also not standard. The only options were sunroof and leather for 89 and a optional CD player was added for 90. You have two of the most common TGP problems. The ABS system malfunctioning and the speedometer and tachometer being way off. The Wizard is correct that parts for the ABS system (which is called the Powermaster III or PMIII for short) can be difficult and expensive to source. He is also correct in saying a standard vacuum based non ABS system from a similar year Grand Prix (or any W-Body for that matter) can be retrofitted to your car. However it is a fairly time consuming venture as the dash will need to be pulled in order to swap the firewall plates over. You will need to source a firewall plate as they cannot be bought new. Also new brake lines will need to be ran to the rear as the PMIII system only has one line running back to a proportioning valve. Myself and a good friend did this brake conversion on mine at the same time we were swapping it to a 5 speed manual a few years ago. The other option is to retrofit a F-Body brake booster and master into the car, which does not require swapping the firewall plate. There are a few guys who have successfully pulled this off and it would likely be the easier route to go. As for the cluster, it is not a wiring issue as I have seen some people mention in the comment. The problem is in the cluster itself, the resistors on the circuit board that control the needles degrade over time causing the resistance to change, therefore changing the position of the needles. This happens to all turbo clusters and they are specific to the turbo cars. A friend of mine rebuilds them. Getting the cluster rebuilt will also fix the issue yours has with the low fuel and check gauges lights being on at all times. On a final note you should pull the ECU out (located on the right side of the engine bay under the fusebox) and pop out the MEMCAL to see if it has a tuned chip in it. I would imagine it most likely does. A few guys were tuning the MEMCALs for increased boost and power gains back in the day. Now there is one guy in NC who does it. He had to re flash my car after the 5 speed swap. These cars are fun, unique and quirky. But also can be problematic and difficult to find some parts for. As you said in the video any money you put in to this you will likely not see back out of it. Even with all the little issues this has taken care of it is still probably no more than a $3,000 car at most. Enjoy it for what it is! It will certainly be a hit at a local car and coffee or cruise night. Mine always gets plenty of attention at such events. Best of luck with the car!

Your 90s GM obsession is why I love this channel. I'm on my 3rd 90s GM car (a 92 Park Avenue, in part because I was impressed by your review). Previously I'd owned a 95 Corsica and a 92 Deville that both looked like hell but both were able to get me across large parts of the US despite leaking like sieves. These cars are good-looking, comfortable, pleasant to drive, easy to fix, they'll run forever if you take care of them, and when things do go wrong they seldom leave you stranded.

Hey Tyler, what are you really doing with your cars and channel ? You buy cars, fix them a little, and maybe then sell them. This Pontiac is a great car to start doing something different. How about buying some of these either unknown or forgotten special collectible cars, and start to restore them for a Tyler collection of forgotten cars ?

It is an interesting piece, being from Australia I have not heard of this car before. The interior is especially interesting. A real snap-shot if 90's trying to be the future? I think it would be great if this car was fully restored. Clean up the interior, reupholstered, re-painted etc. Would be fantastic to see it like it was new. But i guess full resto's aren't your thing, would be a grate set of video's doing the resto, maybe Wizard could do it? Anyway I'll have to keep watching to see what you do with it.

Truth be told, I love this body style of the Grand Prix; released in 1988, it took home Motor Trend's Car of the Year award, that same year, and sold a lot of units. Loved the four door version too. I'd like either the two door GXP, or the four door STE. GM, at the time, didn't want to push it too far, performance wise, because it was front wheel drive. They could've done better though. Still love it now, today.

Hey man, I'm putting this here because it's your newest video so most likely place to get noticed... but have you ever tried to track down a CITROEN XM over there? I'm in the UK and I know you love a land barge. The XM isn't huge by american standards, (it was by European) but it IS a full on Waft-O-tron, however it has a sport mode (in the 90's, I know, right) and can famously out handle a Lotus in said mode, but then irons out the bumps in normal mode.. It's considered the LAST proper Citroen but is from the 90's, not the 60s.. It has many quirks you'd love, like an electrically operated arm-rest, and a lift back that has 2 windows so the rear occupants didn't get a cold neck.. I'd love to see your take on one.

If I had this car I would cherish it for the rest of my life. I love these cars. They are beautiful. It's so hard to find one of these in manual that doesn't have the rocker panels turned to Swiss cheese. I'll trade you my 09 ranger fx4 for it! 220k miles 😆

Should have bought the Capri or mustang ASC Mclaren fox body. Those are cool. 86 and up you can throw in a supercharger just like any 5.0 of that era.

Strangely looks pretty cool. Inside is pretty crappy though. Upgrade the power by any amount will get huge amounts of torque steer.

I had a TGP as my first car. My car also had the same brake issue. For some reason, GM decided to use a Powermaster3 brake booster, which they no longer make. Every other GM car had a PM2 system. A common issue on that car is the exhaust cross-over pipe cracking. It can be fixed with welding. There was a guy that made performance chips for that car that did wake it up. I don't know if he still does it or not. But you can find more information on tgpforums.com

200hp would a fair amount of power for the era especially for a small V6 and close to what the 1990 Mustang GT had stock and it probably has a better power to weight. It later inspired them to later make the GTP.

1990 Mustang 5.0 had about 220 hp stock. This has 205 hp. Both do 0-60 in about 7.0 sec, and the Mustang hits the 1/4 mile in 14.9. So they are probably competitors in speed, from the same year.

They should have used the Vauxhall/Opel Calibra as the base instead of building such a strange thing. I'm guessing it used the same GM2900 platform. Pontiac rebadged quite a few other Vauxhall/Opel's, you guys missed out on the Calibra.

Secondly, I've now realised that at some point I made the transition from thinking Hoovie was an idiot who waisted his money on whatever money-pits, to thinking that Hoovies Garage is an entertaining and unique channel and I can't believe I hadn't subscribed. Signed, Converted PS Having The Wizard is invaluable

I worked for Christopher Pontiac in the late 80's early 90's. I got to drive one of the first ones delivered to Kansas City. It was a very fun car to drive and the hud was the real wow factor of the car. It was disappointing to drive considering we had 2 89 limted addition 20th anniversary Turbo Trans Am's. Those were fun, amazingly super fast cars. the sad part was they seton the lot for 2 and a half years and never sold, so they endedup being sold back to GM.Before anyone asks why didn't I buy one or both, I was a lowly Detail Porter barely making above min. wage, otherwise i would have.(I tried anyhow and i couldn't get financing) Sweet score on your turbo Grand Prix
