I saw this Chevrolet Caprice classic as a cancelled restoration project in a classified ad 10 years ago and had no money to buy it.
I finaly found it again, but it's state was quite horrendous: abandoned outside without the doors for years , nothing working...
I bought it sight unseen and hired a tow truck to bring it at my house where I began to restore it.
I let you discover how I did, as a first full restoration project. I'll show you how it drives (and how the 350ci v8 sounds!) and how it evolved during the months of TLC I gave to it.
To finish, you'll rediscover the car in its current state, 3 years after the end of the restoration.

Hello from the United States, I’m SO impressed with your work! You can certainly be proud of that restoration! These old Caprices are getting harder to find in decent shape in the States but they are nice when they’re running well. Too bad they don’t make cars as comfortable as these anymore!

not to mention that they’re built like a tank and they can have a lot of power under the hood, plus if they’re built right, they will ‘float’ going down the road

I had an '83 Caprice Classic 4-door sedan for 31 years. During that time, I undertook a fair amount of upgrades, including a complete re-work of the front suspension with Poly bushings, etc. I had the body done in order to stabilize it as it had never suffered any collision damage. My goal was to ultimately restore it completely, but I was unable to get that far with it. It ended up sitting in my driveway on new tires for 8 years while my father declined and passed. As the car became surplus, I finally made the painful decision to donate it and am told that it was bought at auction complete and is registered today but not in Massachusetts (where I live). Seeing what you've done here is impressive to say the least. You're living the dream that I kept hid. Nice work! Happy motoring. Those big GM B-Bodies are awesome vehicles! Thanks for sharing this adventure.

As an Australian, I've only ever got up close and looked around one of these once in my 50 years. What struck me most about them was their sheer size. Compared to even their Australian GM equivalent, the HX and HZ Holden Kingswoods, they were massive. It's very easy to see why they were the taxi and police cruiser of choice in America. You've done an amazing job for a "home built" restoration

@@dandanilowicz3587 Look up "HX Holden Kingswood." In Australia in 1976, that would bee the full sized GM family sedan and wagon. Apparently compared to the Caprice, it makes the HX look Nova sized

I’m amazed that you did all of this in your yard, from mechanical to body work to paint especially for car that would have been thrown away in America. Would be cool to upgrade it a bit, a nice set of headers, a bigger cam and better carb would really wake that tired old V8 up. I enjoyed watching this!!!

I like how you actually test-drive the vehicle while rebuilding it, adds to the originality of content and makes it more realistic and enjoyable, there are many car mechanics and restorers on KZbin but a very few actually test drive the vehicle, which seems less practical and authentic, So props to you for keeping it real

The doors edge rusting is from the caprice drip rails on top. The trim is designed as water drip rails. If parked for a long time buy a car cover and put it on jack stands. Also, buy a product called "sta-bil" and pour it in the gas tank . It'll help keep water from accumulation in the gas tank. Or just drive it once a week. Great video. Great work. You should be proud.

Merci! Thank you for rescuing this car! I do have a fondness for the 1977 to 1979 Caprice. Everything about the car was done right. A very solid, reliable car, and durable if properly maintained. You have done such an excellent restoration job. I like cars as stock as possible, and apart from the blacked out wheels, it does have a stock / showroom appearance. A very nice subtle white. Despite sitting at my home watching this, I am having a heart attack as you drive those winding roads at speed in this! You are very brave! Hahaha! Again, a fantastic project that turned out extremely well. May you enjot it for many years to come. Lovely!!!

In the USA these cars were used by the police, from traffic cops to detectives, & many were also utilized as fleet vehicles. This body style had a 23 year run, from 1977 to 1990. Since then, they’ve been modified and restored by various car scenes, from the rap inspired Donk scene, low rider movement, as hotrods, in drag racing & rough examples being used in Demolition Derby. I appreciate that you restored this car and kept it pretty close to stock.

I had one of these in the 90's. A 1981 Caprice Classic with the 350 Olds diesel. After a couple of years the diesel started to consume so much oil that I replaced it with a 305 petrol. I remember it as a wonderfully comfortable car, I have had many Mercedes, BMW and other high end cars later but no one was as comfortable as the Caprice, nowhere near. I had to replace a lot on it though, as things kept braking. Everything from rear axle, gearbox, starter motor and other small bits and pieces, I did not mind much as the parts were cheap and it is very easy to work on. I installed coil over front dampers, and reinforced rear springs, the comfortable ride was still there but the road holding improved a lot. I wish petrol was cheaper as I then would be more than happy to drive one of these even today as a daily driver, with a healthy 350 it would have been great. Good job on this car! It deserve a life as they are excellent cars!

It was "downsized" for 1977, the 1976 models were much larger, and it was Motor Trend Magazine's "Car Of The Year" for 1977. It was actually smaller and lighter, if you can believe it. I had a Bronze 1978 Caprice and a Powder blue 1979 Caprice. They were very good handling cars. The plastic bits, dashboard and headliner were sadly of poor quality, and would become brittle and crack, the headliner would sag... The power window motors also would quit working. They had a pretty hood ornament that looked like the trunk lock cover you installed that would get stolen, and intricate looking full wheel covers that easily fell off or would get stolen as well. Other than that, they were really fun and luxurious cars to drive, and I enjoyed watching you restore your 1978 model. I hope it provides many years of enjoyment. Aloha !

Petite parenthèse, ce projet que vraiment j’adore regarder comme tes autres projets mais fait cependant un peu mal au cœur du fait du temps passé et énergie dépensé; car j habite aux usa depuis 30 ans, et des chevrolet caprice de ce modèle j en voie souvent en bonne condition. my grandma's first new car was a '66 caprice classic. her brother started a chevy dealership that year and every two years he gave her a new one. my whole life (born in '74) she had a blue caprice and i was probably brought home from the hospital in a one. the last car she had was the last caprice from '96. i went to my grandpa's funeral in a blue '84, i learned to drive in a blue '88, went to prom and fell in love in a blue '90, and was shipped off to the military in a blue '92. in 2001 my uncle got drunk and wrapped the '96 around a tree. when she turned 100 she told us that she always wanted a cadillac.
