I bought this Audi RS7 nearly half price from a trade auction as a non runner, the cars only 4 years old with only 33,000 miles. So why is it broken? Let’s find out if I’ve bought a massive headache or if my lucks in!

Id say the fact those 3/4 head bolts being easier to break loose than the rest is the reason it lifted the head in the first place. Manufacturer default right there, unless someones been in there before and didnt torque them to the correct spec.

Other way around, Bolts were loose because the Head gasket had deformed (Compressed) HG had failed for sure but it sounded like it may have Rod/Bearing issues when we heard it running. Expect it's been Ragged to death and possibly with the waterpump being faulty 😥

Water pump failure and engine overheating. Head gasket failed and water get ingested.

Quite common problem on these engines. It happens a lot that the waterpump on the front side starts to fail or the vacuum solenoid on the driver side which controls the waterpump flaps. If you ignore it the engine will overheat and eventually causes a head gasket failure

Check the water pump. It is vacuum controlled and has a sleeve over the impeller. The vacuum line to control this sleeve draws water from the cooling system into the control solenoid causing it to malfunction. That causes the engine to overheat because the sleeve sticks over the pump impeller. Quite a common issue.

I would check the air to water intercooler as sometimes those tend to leak and cause water into the cylinders, although it wouldn’t explain there only being water in one side of the bank we never saw what the other side looked like! Also removing a head you’re supposed to break the nuts/bolts loose in the reverse torque sequence until they are fully loose so you don’t have any risk of warping the head fyi! Great video btw!

You won’t find anyone better at building Audi engines than Ricky, if anyone has watched him build an engine it’s incredible how fastidious and thorough he is.

One thing though, maybe try and find out if the car is mapped. It has a suspension upgrade so possibly it’s tuned hence the head gasket failure?

The problem with overheating engines is that it might lead to a seized engine which is quite a big problem to fix well glad it wasn't the case here
