I bought this Mercedes CLK240 for £1000 but it’s got one REALLY ANNOYING FAULT!

Goes to prove though a prestige brand does not necessarily give you reliability. It's a shame that a highly noticeable but unusual fault lets the car down. I think it's worth investing in that new part despite the dash needing to come out. This looks far more than a 1K car and I think after some investment this'll appreciate in value once it's brought back to life. That's a beautiful doggie by the way!

I had a c240 that clicked like that only when starting, it is pretty much a dash out job as you say,I never bothered fixing mine as didnt bother me that much!

My 2005 CLK 55 AMG has that clicking too that lasts maybe 30-40 seconds before stopping. It also has 180k miles on it sooo... lol

I've got a 2002 CLK320 with a similar issue, but nowhere near as loud and it only does it for the first couple of minutes you're driving, after that it calms down and all is fine.

Ok. So the CLK has independent fans, the car has probably not driven in a while. The fan could be stuck or it needs change, but each vent is independent. Now the ESP is probably because your battery is low. As you drive it it will reset

Dash centre out.i freed mine off,got it all working then fault reappeared.removed arm from offending stepper motor and no click.

You can get a year related VRM free of charge if you tell DVLA you want to surrender the old VRM. You have to register and tax the car. So it will cost one month's tax. I have done it quite a few times.

I think your being a bit tough on the old thing - most importantly the hood works - they can be a world of pain on these at this age. Sort esp light out and sell it on for 1500 quid as an Mot'd spares repair with the stepper motor fault - someone will want a cheap summer convertible and will be prepared to live with it and pull the motor fuse out - of fix it properly themselves. 👍

It’s easy to knock it, but you paid £1k for it, spend a bit on it and it’s worth £4-5k every day, if you spent £1500 on it’s still worth doing.
