I Broke My Truck - Def Fluid In My Diesel Tank - 2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD

Huston we have a problem! I broke my truck! I accidentally put some def fluid in my diesel tank! Yes you heard that right. My 2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD is now blowing smoke and running rough. For people who don't know DEF fluid is a required chemical that new diesel trucks have to had, you normally add it by dumping it into a separate tank on your vehicle, my truck has the def fluid fill hole right next to the diesel fill hole! What DEF fluid is supposed to do if I am not mistaken is lower the emissions from diesel exhaust by small amounts of it being infected into the exhaust system which captures some of the pollutants. Anyway let me know in the comments if you have done this! What a big mistake!

Same problem yesterday, I wasn't paying any attention while fueling my DEF tank and put about 2 liters in my diesel tank. Makes you realize why they couldn't at least not put these 2 tanks next to each other when it can cause so much engine damage.

Oh no sorry to hear that. Did you drive after you put it in the tank? GMC moved it from under the hood to next to the diesel fill. When I bought it they told me that and I thought that was great at the time as I didn't want to open the hood. Wish it would have stayed there now.

@@hagonshomestead I already had my engine started while fueling with DEF because since it's not a flammable liquid I'm not afraid to have my car running, I got a bit scared when I realized what I did and only moved my car to park it, then I checked the internet and got really scared. However, I already fixed my car and luckily had no engine damage.

@@ZafrasF Thats good news that nothing was effected. You probably caught it in time before it got into the system, or at least enough of it to do damage. Did you pump out the fuel?

@@hagonshomestead Sorry for the late answer, I did not do anything myself, I don't know much about cars. I took it to a workshop a few hours later after my mistake, they pumped out all the fuel and cleaned my engine. They said I got lucky.

Sorry but not a “car guy” should not own anything diesel. Unless you have deep pockets and money to throw at mechanics, especially stealerships.

Owning a diesel truck is no different than owning a gas powered one. Except for the stupid def fluid. My old gas powered truck was nothing but trouble and none of it was my fault. Diesel trucks aren’t anything unique. I think no vehicles are made well anymore.

Well add me to the list just put 7 gallons in the tank mechanic said call the insurance guy everything has to be replaced and will be most likely considered totaled wont no for sure till tmorrow soo sick to my stomach

Ya probably will cost a lot, crazy how such a small amount of stuff can cause that damage. Can't wait until the warranty is over and I will be removing the def fluid system from the truck. It's not mediatory in my region.

I did try other brands but nothing worked. I would say I will try it next time, but there wont be a next time hopefully! ha ha

Sorry for the delay, not I parked it for the winter. I used it a few times to pickup straw and hey and it runs ok but I think an injector is gone. So will take it in next month to get it fixed. I will do an update video once its done and the cost. I didn't need it over the winter so didn't want to shell out the cash.

The dealership did not tell me to drive it, it had already been driven at that point. It had not and has not gotten worse after they told me to try and clean out the system. I will have an update video next month about this issue. Stay tuned!

I just did the samething yesterday with my 2021 3.0 I drove it home 4 miles, so I'm sure the damage is done. Dyeing to find out your out come and bill. I was told by my mechanic friend if it all has to be replaced $12,000. 😢

Sorry for the delay in my response. No not yet, I used it a couple times over the winter to get some straw and hey but didn't bother getting it fixed yet. I am going to take it in next month and have it serviced. I think an injector is messed up so its not going to be cheap. I will do a video once I have an update on the cost...
