My former (volunteer) fire chief said "If you ain't f-ing up, it's because you ain't showing up!" Pulling parallel to the truck on the front wheel like this puts a LOT of stress into the steering because you're pulling way outside the kingpin axis because of the wheel offset. Pulling more away from the truck there's not so much stress as the steering can turn a bit to align the force with the axis. Asking the driver to hold the wheel while you pull along the truck well outside the axis is a great way to break his thumbs or fingers, as there is way more force there than power steering can overcome... Learn, don't repeat... :)

It seems that fairing can't take much flexing at all, a neighbour bought a used truck that had the fairing and it was all cracked up so he stripped off the fairing and put normal steps on the saddle tanks to climb into the cab instead. A suggestion with the rim-sling... you could put it in & out of two holes at the top, then in & out of another two holes at the bottom, such that the free ends are through holes that are directly opposite to each other. That way you're pulling from the center of the wheel (on average), and there's much less chance of spinning it. There's twelve holes, so if you number them like a clock: Go into "12", out of "11", then into "7" and out of "6". You'd then be pulling on both the 12 o'clock & 6 o'clock positions.
