Many of you have seen the process of making this rotary valve engine with different intake and exhaust system and how I tried to start it.
If not, then let's watch the previous video first:
• I built a brand-new en...
After so many attempts to start this engine, I was ready to give up, but your incredible optimism and support inspired me to try again.
Thank you so much for your support, after reading all the comments I had no right to just give up.
Let's try to run it together.
I've highlighted some of your tips. So let's follow these tips one by one and see if the engine will work.
For those who don't know what the video is about.
I had an idea for a long time to create an engine without valves and springs.
Fuel and air enter the cylinder through a rotating shaft, which in turn is connected by a chain.
At the right moment, a channel for injecting the fuel mixture opens, and after detonation, the fuel is released through another channel.
As it turned out, there were a lot of variations of such engines, and many of them had already been used in the past.
As you have already noticed, I read almost all of your messages and am happy to share my ideas with you, and as far as possible, I listen to your opinion.
Share your opinion on this and leave comments.
With best regards

I’m 52 years old. In 1982-1983, I was drawing a mini helicopter in school during science class. I had no idea that a Wankle, rotary motor existed but I drew up a motor without typical pistons and valves because I couldn’t understand why there was so many parts, including moving parts. One of the very first ideas I had was to get rid of the valve along with the push rods rockers and cam. I wondered why there wasn’t a cylindrical shaft that had slots in it to open up at the correct time for fuel to enter and exhaust to escape? Later, I then thought about the piston itself. Why up and down, why not a large cylinder shaped shaft with a slot cut out of its side for a combustion chamber as it rotated. So, to make a long story short, you just woke up a dream that I had always wondered about for more 40 years and now it’s a reality. You are an amazingly talented guy. Great Job my man.

@jeffersongaragecustoms6431
@jeffersongaragecustoms6431 2 жыл бұрын
He did mix a little oil with the fuel, but the smoke is from burning oil out of the crank case. I'm not sure how to correct it, but the oil is getting to combustion chamber around the valve drum and it is consuming its own life blood. Super cool to see a radical concept physically work. With a bit of refinement might be able to solve the oil consumption issue. My left field idea has been to run "conventional" valves off of solenoids.... near infinitely adjustable valve timing. And no parasitic loss.

@@jeffersongaragecustoms6431 Maybe something more simple would work like a reclaim cavity or something along those lines. It is difficult to seal rotating without a sealed bearing or something similar. But maybe if there was a way to have it run off before getting to the valve tube openings?

Crazy idea...what if there were two valve tubes? One exhaust and one intake. Using bearings that maintain center and are the only part of the system in the head that are lubricated. Could help with compression if sealed well. Additionally it would give more timing options but require a new cylinder. Also gear ratios would come into play...math.

@angusmurray3767
@angusmurray3767 2 жыл бұрын
The lack of seals for the rotary valve is the engine's biggest design problem. It causes loss of compression and sucks in oil on the inlet stroke. A partial fix for this is to have separately fed plain bearings at each end of the shaft with viton o ring seals at the outer ends of both ports to prevent oil being drawn in on the inlet stroke. There will still be some compression loss around the annular space between the shaft and housing as high pressure gas leaks to the inlet side but at least the compression loss will be reduced and the engine won't burn oil. Because the shaft is a reasonably small diameter, Viton should be able to cope with the rubbing speed but it is essential to use Viton to cope with the high temperature generated. The groove depth needs to be carefully controlled to get sealing without undue compression of the rubber which would cause it to burn. The system isn't new as this design has been used on motorcycle engines where the rotary valve has been driven by bevel gears.

Electro-pneumatic poppet valves can vary the timing. No camshaft needed just a trigger wheel to open and close the valves. Different wheel = different timing. Mount the valves vertical with sacrificial rockers and you can have a few timing mistakes with no harm done. Check out how Fiat built their twin cam 16 valve 1.3 diesel. It’s an efficient and very clever design.

I would imagine oil in the fuel would be beneficial in this prototype for two reasons. First, keeping the rotary valve lubricated is very important and it would take quite a bit of developmental work on various materials, seals, and oiling schemes to arrive at the right combination for reliability and longevity. Adding oil to the fuel is a simple precaution to quickly and easily solve a potential valve lubrication problem. In addition, cylinder wall lubrication of a 4 stroke engine isn't straight forward either. Most small engines like this rely on a "splash" system where the crankshaft literally splashes around in the oil sump and lubricates the cylinder walls when the piston is at the top of the stroke and then the oil ring wipes a film of lubrication up and down the cylinder wall. From the photos of the cylinder wall damage, it is clear that this engine is not being properly lubricated from crankcase oil alone, so introducing oil with the fuel makes sense. Remember, this is a proof of concept engine intended mostly to experiment with the rotary valve intake and exhaust idea. I would imagine that experimenting with valve timing, perhaps with a simple way to adjust the timing of the intake separately from the exhaust timing, would be the next step, maybe in conjunction with some ignition timing alterations. Refining the lubrication issues is of lesser importance.

@@Six_Gorillion Firstly, it has a timing chain and an overhead rotary valve in place of traditional poppets. It is a 4 stroke. He may be adding the oil because he is worried about his cylinder wall I would reckon. The fuel doesn't go anywhere else. Many would consider what I'm about to say a non issue but the fluid used when honing a cylinder is much more important than most think. In a performance engine where you want every possible equation covered I was taught to only use oil. Preferably the oil you run in the motor. Solvent based chemicals embed the silica or grit from sand paper or hone microscopically into the cylinder wall. I was always taught to only wash cylinder with soap and water. Doing this many times and on my two stroke motors only use the oil Mix with fuel as my cutting fluid and wash often in between. A dishwasher works great but yes solvents don't ruin an engine but eliminate any potential issues when possible. I like it. Keep testing and get those piston rings seated tight to stop all the blow by.

I am so glad you took the comments to heart and proceeded to succeed! Try a little less oil in the fuel, as the engine is oil bath, unless there is no spray or slash system, otherwise I would be tempted to forgo any oil! The other reason for the smoke could be oil from the rotary valve system!

That is pretty cool! So many less moving parts than conventional valve setup. Nice one. I wonder if you can go larger diameter on the valve shaft (and holes) and therefor more air flow. Obviously adjusting for prime afr would be paramount. Could imagine a turbo / fuel injected version down the line!

I would not work in real practical job. Consider the shaft valve that took all heat from exhaust through it. Had the engine been running in long time ,it would have fired. Because the intake side is so heat.

@@alexlo7708 I don’t know, it might just work. The way it currently is built, the intake is on “upper half” while the exhaust is on the “lower” half of the tube… but what if the intake was used to cool the exhaust end? In stead of splitting the tube top and bottom it could be split side by side size the holes to be about 2/6 intake 1/6 exhaust with each chamber inlet overlapping. Like if the intake is at the top, the hole for it in the combustion chamber will be at the lower side while if the exhaust is at the bottom, it’s chamber hole would extend to the upper side of the tube. The intake would be larger while the exhaust would be smaller contributing to higher pressure ratio and cooling. Maybe?

@@stephenvelazquez5939 Any approach should base on principle that exhaust and intake must not be on the same metal part, I think. Intake in anyway cannot cool down exhausted side. Fantastic job , being a mechanic for 50+ years the Rotary valve is a great design, but the oil system you have to the rotary valve shaft will cause excessive smoking , oil consumption , I think you need to redesign the oil system so the oil is not pulled into the intake cycle and causing your smoke and oil problem, if you can solve that problem you have a engine that’s better designed then a valve and cam design! I think you will have to modify the shape of the openings in the rotary valve. If you think about a conventionally four stroke engine the camshaft lobes are ”drop” shaped so the valves start to open slow and then accelerate for fast opening. Then they remains open and then for a fast closing action.

I can well imagine this construction as a 2 or 4 cylinder boxer construction. Valve control is uncomplicated and easy. The only problem I see is the chain control. A bevel gear transmission would require less maintenance and be more robust. The honing of the cylinders is not optimal, less rotation but faster up and down movement would be better. How's the compression?
@pauljs75
@pauljs75 2 жыл бұрын
Not the first of its type, as working models based on some variant of the concept have been made since the 1890's. You can find blueprints and patent drawings for them if searching for "rotary valve internal combustion" as a search phrase. However it's neat to see this one working given all the home-built aspects. Not exactly an easy feat for most people short of doing a direct copy of some known working engine. As for improvements? Seems the current version relies on oil around the valve drum to both lubricate and provide the seal around the valve drum. That's why it's one heck of an oil-burner. Might want to try some kind of graphite/bronze type material to seat in as a hard-pressed bushing around the intake and exhaust ports. (Similar material to electric motor brushes?) Maybe a ceramic felt as a crush/springy material with just enough give and resilience, and then the bushing would fit in the groove over that which keeps it located at the valve seats? Something soft enough to not wear out the valve drum and graphite to help it be self lubricating at the wiping contact surface. Thus something other than the oil film to provide a seal right at the point where oil would be leaking from the ports into the cylinder. Just a thought there.

UFO would be two spinning disks. The disks spin in opposite directions and have very small raised humps on the top side of each to create lift. The bottom disc has raised humps as well creating lift in the opposite direction. You think that downward lift would counter the upward lift but this is not the case because planes and even fighter jets can fly upside down. The upper disc spins faster than the lower to launch from the ground and the different speeds of each are used to control up and down. A gyro flywheel is used for left and right / forward and aft. A vacuum is created in front of the craft as air is pumped to the rear creating a high pressure on the rear part of the craft to propel it forward. This is a crude explanation of only a small portion of some of the needed systems. I'm just a stranger in need of more strangers with ideas to make it fly. Aloha

Most 4cycle engines have a slight overlap in the intake valve opening and the exhaust closing, to help the flow of gases. Just curious.

The Atkinson cycle is the way to go for fuel efficiency over the Otto cycle. But for smoother running, understanding LSA (Lobe Separation Angle) on a camshaft, and the right amout of valve overlap from 10 to 20 degrees would boost engine RPM, power, and some MPG's/LPK's.
