Hey everyone back with more Scrap Mechanic Survival! Today we are back with a ridiculous build that has really no purpose in survival... building a catapult that launches fruit crates directly from the packing station to the trader in a single shot.

Fun survival fact: You can fully automatically farm and gather plants, pack them and deliver them to the trader. Then you can press the suction button using a spudgun, which gets ammo from automatic framing. So, you can technically fully automate trading material delivery. This could be usefull for some mod ideas...
@tingcraft3920
@tingcraft3920 3 жыл бұрын
Another Fun Fact: You can plant 9 tier 1 crops without starting a raid, meaning using the method above, you could be constantly packaging crops without a raid! Now if we got blocks that could activate when a chest got low on storage for example, we could automatically shut off the crop farm and turn on a potato farm. However potatoes are a higher value and thus you can only plant 6 potatoes without spawning a raid. Tier one crops have a value of 1 and potatoes have a value of 1.5, other crops have higher values
@Firebuck
@Firebuck 3 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure the packing plant and trader aren't spawned when you're not there. The need to be there in person to load each grid makes the automation less useful IMO.

@@Firebuck Yes thats true. :\ This is a little sad. It all depends on the amount of chunks you load. But I was thinking ... You can put a chair that follows the whole process. And although it is not 100% non-dependent on the player, automation can be 100% automatic. And you can keep your system running and working while the dwarf sits in the chair and with a press of one switch... And you let the system run for some time. :D

I was hoping that there'd be a vid on this effort, especially after seeing how much lag can be caused by a conveyor (love ya squiddy!) I still think this idea could be tweaked (sans fuel) to something functional... like for example, think of how basketball works with a backboard... but ultimately something on rails would probably be most efficient for fully auto. P.S. I love watching all of you guys play Scrap Mechanic and trying different things. Thanks kAN.

I think the best way to get this done without fuel and thrusters is the bearing resistance method. But you'd have to use about 2, maybe 3 catapults in that case with some how managing to catch a crate and have it load and fire onto the next one in a series. Not to mention to make it truly useful it would have to be caught and loaded from the packing machine directly. I you have to place and weld each crate it's way too time consuming.

Hey Kan!! At 7:22 you started talking about how you can create a cannon to fire the crates with spud gun's, I have created a cannon with spud guns, and bearings! Continue if you want instruction's: All you have to do is get some blocks, get 2 or more spud guns, and the item you are going to fire Place the blocks so you can put bearing in front of the barrel of the spud guns and place your cardboard on the bearings, (Make sure the cardboard is all one piece) Place the crate on the cardboard and only the cardboard, and Fire! The crate should launch depending on the angle and the amount of spud gun's! Hope this was helpful, and Kan, if you're reading this, Keep up the good work!

Cardboard does not work in survival, but bubble wrap blocks do. With 40 spuds i was able to get about same distance for player in a seat as you got for the second crate. Support the bubble wrap platform on a single block, shoot that block first, then fire a volley about 0.1 seconds later after platform/payload have released. That way you can aim the contraption without having to worry about the payload sliding off. One of the best catapults i got was an arm on bearings that's flipped by the lift itself near the base. Cheap to build, free to run, and worked fairly well for launching wocs into a lake :D
@KrawllUnchained
@KrawllUnchained 3 жыл бұрын
I think you're right that this isn't a good way of transporting veggies to the trader but, you just demonstrated how much potential the concept of catapults has in SM. They may not be the right thing for transporting produce but you could use one to catapult yourself up onto the roof of a warehouse or, build a smaller version directly on the roof of the warehouse to catapult all the stuff down, closer to your vehicle. There's gotta be some other things you can do that would be useful, i just can't think of anything else right now.

You need to both have the catapult welded to the ground or have it be so massive it's immovable and put a stopper for the arm swing. Energy is being wasted when the whole rig is being tossed on the ground and also because you're relying on the luck that it will slide of at the correct moment, you're getting a lot more variable in your result. A stopper arm would make it so that at whatever angle you put it at for the arm would be respectively the inverse within 90 degrees for the launch angle for the crate (20 degree stopping angle will launch the package at a 70 degree angle). 45 degrees is the optimal angle for distance, so if you had those two things, you might be able to get away with less, but you'd still need thrusters and the BP Oil Spill's worth of gas to run them.
@patricksawyer9779

I think that a timed release mechanism for your payload may be in order, just so you can release the crate at the right angle for maximum range. The aforementioned spud gun and cardboard might be the best option...

I have an idea on how to transport crates safely and without lag. You could make a monorail train-like thing that transports crates to the trader. Render distance is a big problem though, and the only solution that I see is to be on that train-like thing and loading everything around it. I think it's the biggest problem with SM automation - it's possible to make AI vehicles that wanders around the world mining and chopping, but you have to be around it to make it work.

if you want to reduce the material cost of launching these crates then instead of using the jets you could try putting a second one of those bearing tension devices halfway down the length of the catapult so it has 2 pivot points and increase the speed that way without thrusters. You could also build a large funnel around the target area so that the crates still get in even if its not perfectly accurate and it could catch the crates that try to bounce out ant let them fall back into the delivery area

all you got to do is move your thrusters up higher... remember torque? yea that applies here too... move them thrusters higher... or is it down, so they have less of a distance to travel then the rest of the arm making it faster? well one of the two... try it out lol. also the angle you have... make that a 90 so it stops launching up, pay attention to wear it releases and make a hard angle to hold it longer... you can always clamp it too and have it release when it gets to a certain point.

When I watched squid’s video I had a similar idea. But instead using a railgun method. Bearing powered tires because the more bearings you add the faster they will go. And it will be more Controllable. Accuracy isn’t as big of a problem because you can build a backboard on the receiving end to direct things

pistons would be a much better option then thrusters, far cheaper also. also making the back of the catapult a higher angle would give you much better results. a lot of wasted energy is being used to throw them so high up, instead that energy could be used to push it forward faster. resulting in using a lot less energy. 2 towers of pistons connected to 2 bearings connected to the farthest part of the catapult. you can use the same glitch as the bearings for pistons. however pistons will be able to accelerate A LOT faster based on the number you have. how long the arm is and what speed they are set too. this gives very fine control over the launch speed. oh and 2 rows of 15 bearings is vastly stronger then a single row of 30 bearings. while 30 bearings can handle more weight, that's not really the problem. launch velocity is the problem. using two sets of bearings in series pretty much doubles the launch speed. 3 rows of 10 bearings would be 1 x 2 x 2 = 4 times the launch speed. it's pretty much the same thing with controller cars. the more bearings in series, the faster it goes. however controller powered bearings don't seem to care about torque too much so that's really not a concern. pistons would help not only help lift it but they would also keep it more stable and keep it from flipping into the ground... xD

Impressive, and i will try this one day for sure. No matter how idiotic and wasteful it is, its cool and fun

Maybe make it work better by building a giant wall/catcher behind the delivery pad, so that any crates that end up near it are redirected to land on it.

i wonder if instead of thrusters you could divide the distal part of the arm into segments with bearings that would use controllers as well, further propelling the projectile.

Kan, the cardboard glitch does work however theres a certain corner the crosshairs have to be on the cardboard block when placing the object. Click and drag still works for better placement

Try lighter material for your catapult also use your lift at the base of the catapult to force it up instead of thrusters.. If the bearings can handle the stress you may be onto something.

Should make a bunch of big hands that pivot and pass the crate from hand to hand with sensors to automate the loading and passing

Maybe you could fence the target around a bit so the crates can bounce to the right position a bit better.

Most of the issue was the lack of a backing on the cup of the catapault, the force of the thrust was allowing the crate to slip up the ramp you had on the back and prematurely launch.

I wonder if you could make some kind of train track type thing so you can send out an automated vehicle. Though you'd have to follow it anyway. At least you could be AFK.
