I'd run that lower track 100% across the opening as you have potential to catch a sidewall and knocking hole in tire if you only go so far across

Was going to say the same thing. taking it the extra 4 feet until behind the other side of fencing, even if not technically needed would also help with it looking more uniform as well as protecting cars, kids, and others from catching the edge. Ideally it would have been set into the concrete vs raised, but sometimes you just gotta make do.

@@LonestarHawaiian doh.. should have read the comments before I made mine above. In addition to concrete, add rebar, or mix the concrete with reinforcing fibre (same stuff they use in concrete counter tops) to strengthen against shear loads.

Great idea! I've also seen a boxed steel piece (maybe 3x3 or 4x4...not sure) used as a vertical support for these gates. Not a pro, though.

@LonestarHawaiian, I agree with this. I had fixed a broken fence post on a chain link swing gate that broke at ground level by running a couple of pieces of rebar down the center of the post then filling with concrete. In your case I would probably use 3 pieces of rebar down the center of the post and filling with concrete. I would probably do that to both posts for the rolling gate and maybe even the couple of posts that you moved.

And as you fill them with concrete use a hammer drill with a super dull bit or a sawzall (reciprocating saw) to vibrate the post so the concrete can settle inside.

Welding tip, if you're using flux core ( I don't see gas) ; verify the welder is setup for DC Electrode Negative (DCEN). It will greatly reduce splatter.

Very well done and beautiful. If you're worried about your post standing up to a wind, fill the post with cement. If you are using bagged concrete you may want to improve the strength of the mix by adding additional cement to the bag mix. The bag is usually mixed to 2,000 psi. To get it to about 4,000 psi add 2 full shovels of cement to the mix. This will increase the strength of the mix and in turn the post. Make sure to hammer the post as you put the concrete into the post. This will make sure that you don't have air pockets and the post is full from bottom to top. This is the way posts are done in parking lots and around items that require protection in parking lots.

At Tractor Supply, you'll find Hobart anti spatter spray. Spray it on the tip and on what you're welding. You'll see that the spatter brushes or grinds off much cleaner.

Crazy that both top comments was exactly what I was going to suggest. Now for a new one, put a second rolling pin brace down further. If it should ever get bumped it might help keep it from falling over and hurting someone. Obviously closed and bumped is not as likely to come off track but at any other point you are relying on one pivot point, try and lessen that vulnerability. You could also just add a rail, think hand rail, onto that pad you poured that comes up about half way. The fence would catch it falling one way and the safety rail the other.
@RichardBauer_
@RichardBauer_ 10 ай бұрын
Looking good! I would recommend longer roller guides though. Doesn't look to be catching enough of the gate and if for some reason someone bumps that gate with a car, and a kid is around, it would be fairly easy to knock the gate over and land on said child. With longer rollers it will help hold the gate up. Looking good!

There’s a Spaulding spray u can use for cleaner work. To much heat and dirty steel. Try trigger welding instead. If not turn your wire speed down and heat till you get it right. Your fillet is important. Got to bevel your steel more and or leave a bit of a gap when marrying your pieces so you have a little more penetration.

Like someone say - FILL THE POLE WITH CONCRETE but - use glass or basalt fibers to make it stronger , add plasticizer so you will need less water to make it "flow" better (with less water it will be even stronger and less chance of cracks) and MUST HAVE ( 2 above isn't as necessary)==== add at least 1 piece of rebar so it wont crack after some time and wont get pushed up if the pipe is smooth (it will be best to add 2-3 pieces of 4-8mm rebar / alternative will be piece of threded rod )

8:45 and 19:17 you can see the existing fence on the right has a slight gap between planks to allow the wood to expand and contract, clamping them tight at 16:57 won't leave any room for that...

You can motorized that gate from ebay or amazon for about $220 (I did the same thing). No need to spend a thousand dollars for a fancy motor. The $220 cheap version lasted us 3-years and is doing just fine! Came with two remotes and I was even able to buy a separate wireless keypad that lets us open/close the gate from outside.

weld up the ends of the square tube or water will sit inside and rust from the inside out. also would extend the Vtrack all the way across the width of the gate so the end dose not wiggle or move if you extend it the full width you can fasten it down very well at either end without roll interupting.

Eh... Just depends.... Those metal poles staying in the ground more often than not depend on was the Concrete properly mixed before pouring and did you you give yourself enough depth to properly anchor into the ground. Some people either cheap out buying a short fence pole instead of getting the longer (usually 9-10 ft long) proper fence pole.

Cemented fence posts do have a serious tendency to crack. The expansion coefficient of steel and concrete is close, but not quite the same, and during summer, that pole will heat up way quicker than the concrete. The better option is screw in posts. They just don't move, even when subjected to the freeze and thaw cycles of a harsh Canadian winter.

Just a 12x6' folding gate with a 4' and 8' section. It was built right with 4x4's instead of 2x4's previously and really good hinges. Almost 8 years ago that cost me almost a $1000. In today's economy this gate was a great value and you learned new skills/things like pickets need to be cut to size.

Steel here: With the polls a usually good idea is to plate it for strength and when you dig down - dig in a square and concrete the general area before putting dirt over the rest - adds stability to the structure - if you wanna be rough just weld the plate and it will be fine - if you want even stronger bolt through the plates into harder ground with a rod

as far as the post you are concerned about moving, ....why not add a support bracket on a 45 degree from top of the post your concerned about down to the bottom of next post that is holding up the gate. That should give it more support. You better keep a good coat of paint on your 2x2 SQ tubing you welded up, or else your going to have rust stains all over your driveway. I would powdercoat it within next 5 years. I also predict you will either make the gate electric in the future or just leave the gate open all the time, once the neighbors get used to seeing your massive shop. Because getting out of your car all the time to close the gate manually after you drive thru it, is going to get old real quick.

That entire 16' section is only held in place by the roller tube at 21:33. The first time you get a straightline wind across the gate its blowing over and destroying it. I would consider another vertical support on the opposite side of the gate to sandwich the moving gate in the middle and make it more rigid and prevent it from toppling over in a wind storm.

Reverse your polarity on the welder - Switch the cables under the door to the opposite posts. Bingo! And get a micro closer to the material. Also I know you want to bang it out and save time. But slow down a little and slow down the feed a little more. Be patient. That thing isn’t meant for speed and production quantity. Good stuff. Plus, it isn’t anything a soft grinding wheel cant fix.Maybe think about sealing the tube ends on the gate up as well. Rusting from both the inside and out is a death sentence, especially in Hawaii. Sealing the ends will allow rust on one side and extend the life of it.

Maybe buying a pressure washer with a fine amount of different Nozzle attachments will be the next best purchase because often, times wood and metal fences that have been out in the open facing all the different types of weather and hot and cold climates causing them to grow corrosion or a mold layer on their surface so hosing them down with a powerful pressure washer will help to rejuvenate them back to life good as new. if it doesn't work out then you will still have a fine pressure washer to was your cars and big trucks with at hand really helping you out and saving overall water usage altogether by reducing total water bucket filling trips and just the total amount of water flowing off from a water hose so save water on your property cleanup and vehicle clean up time.

When I was young, I thought people who live in an HOA were poor. Why would anyone live in a place like that unless you didn't have a choice and you could not afford something better. When I went to buy my first house at age 34, the realtor opened my eyes as to what an HOA really is. I told her to find me a nice house not in an HOA. That was too easy. I'm 55 now and still am unsure why anyone would live in an HOA. I do not see the benefit vs what I have....a really nice upper medium class neighborhood.
