Firstly I LOVE THIS! Secondly, what if for the buying a plot system everyone has an in game item (like toast or an apple or something) that they place to mark their properties? Each person's item could be personalized to them and it doesn't have to be food that was just all I could think of.

When my family play monopoly we use the free parking square. If you land on tax you lay the money in the middle. And If you land on the free parking square you get the money in middle. We use this so the free parking square gets an use to it :):)
