I am rebuilding a run down mansion on my farm. I have gutted, rebuilt, and redesigned the entire thing and today I am attempting to build a heated tent around the new underground movie theater so I can waterproof it during freezing outside conditions. Welcome to the 100% restoration of my mansion.

One thing you need to keep in mind is when you get old, stairs and spiral staircases will not be your friend. Try and make something that will allow one level living. There are several other things that I could mention but I won't take up the space or the time to go into those things. Thanks for sharing this adventure with us. I have so enjoyed the journey.

@ Well, one could dissagree I suppose. They just have different ways to make money. Cooper works on the farm and has a repair shop for trucks. Cole works on the farm and makes videos. Dad works on the farm and digs graves. The longer it takes to build this house, which tons of people like, the more $ Cole brings in. More trucks needing repair brings in $. More graves that need digging brings in $. All three have 2 jobs, fantasy, not so much. Smart business, much. remember these 3 guys had the largest yield ever on their farm in 2024.

Over the years watching I'm always impressed with the skill that Cooper has servicing all the equipment. I can imagine having the skills at home rather than having to pay a mechanic to come in every time is a real benefit to the farm. Cooper always does a good job explaining what and how he's doing anything. Also always interested in the home addition and how it's been going. Once the basement walls are waterproofed, I imagine the construction on top of the foundation can begin. Cole one thing to think about is to make an allowance for an elevator from the basement to the 2nd story. Not that it'll be unused/saved for the future place but what would be a closet where the floor can be removed and expose a shaft for an elevator. A friend built that into his design, and he did eventually end up putting an elevator in due to a family requirement. If you never use or need it then its at least allowed for as a future possible need.

Cole, please consider including a space/shaft for a future elevator. That is important when you are thinking about having older family in your home or a child with a disability who would need an elevator. It’s easier to plan it in the design now and use that the needed shaft for storage on each level. Elevator can be installed in the future.
@robdeaton9910
@robdeaton9910 6 күн бұрын
Cole I figured that you would have an area for an elevator for the future. Just thinking ahead about the possibility of someone who may be handicapped come to visit. With that many floors and spiral staircases would be disheartening to get to places in the. $7000 mansion. Just My humble opinion, besides having at least one bathroom handicapped accessible. Just thinking forward for you Cole.😊

nope! He would then need to make a concrete shaft that goes almost thru the roof and he would need to have a machine room for that elevator either in the basement or in the attic. By his layout that is not possible and he would need to reorganise his whole house just to fit an elevator
@robdeaton9910
@robdeaton9910 5 күн бұрын
@gamingit1 I'm sorry but you are wrong, one does not a concrete shaft to have a lift system. Modern hydraulic systems with a steel frame can handle the load. He isn't building a hotel, there are lots of options available for lift systems to fill his needs.
@gamingit1
@gamingit1 5 күн бұрын
@robdeaton9910 nope, that has 3 floors+ basement and steel frame can't take force of those floors plus the basement. I've saw elevators colapse just beacuse engineers thinking like you "we ain't buildin' hotel for concrete shaft" and then regreting it after having to rebuild the whole elevator just beacuse it was "cheaper" (it was not*). Plus he would need to have a seperate hydraulic machine room in basement and hydroelevators are known to be bending steel frames which it would not work. He would either have to have one more floor for elevator machine room, concrete shaft and/or construct his house to hide that floor. Do you need mor reasons?

@gamingit1smoke much fancy grass? This isnt a hotel.
@gamingit1
@gamingit1 4 күн бұрын
@@NVMDSTEvil first, go learn how physics work and then come back. Second, it has to be a concrete shaft beacuse of force that is applied to shaft walls. Steel would not be able to withstand all that force. Third, that elevator has 3 floors+ basement, so no residential elevator would work beacuse they don't make them for 4 floor setup (2 floor max) then he would need to install normal elevator which is not safe nor practical

Hi Cole, I agree with some of the comments below where an elevator would be a good design choice for the future. I'm only 59 but I haven't been upstairs in my house since 2020 due to health reasons. I'd like to think I'm still relatively young but things change fast and I could never have anticipated my current health issues. Had I known or had foresight when I bought in 2018 I would certainly have bought a bungalow but I wasn't planning for any issues and now I have a whole upstairs that I can't use. Something to consider because you never know what the future holds. Love you guys and always look forward to your videos.

Hi Cole, great design. You have an absolutely enormous house on the way. May I make some suggestions. Add a waiting room and direct access to the office when you build the garage, or make the gym/office hallway a waiting room and have access to office directly from garage entry. Visitors for business should not access family sections of the house needlessly. Second floor access of the spiral staircase can be solved by widening the side hallway (2 feet off of big room making slight L) and line with bookcases and have secret bookcase doorway. That way you can go from office balcony to book lined hallway to secret spiral stairs. Lastly, the attic area should have no internal walls, only dividers that hide murphy beds. That, and maybe a small bathroom will allow for a slumber party/celebration guest crash pad/large family stay overs as families grow... while also allowing for a large open area for other celebrations and activities. I envision a "convertible bunkhouse attic rumpus room" big enough for games of tag or ability to sleep 16.

Two things, 1st. Plan for in floor receptacles in the theater under the chairs for power recliners or just to plug phones/devices into them. 2, the worlds largest hallway should be your gym. With it in the basement and under your office and mudroom the noise transfer of weights/machines would be minimal. You can then utilize the space on the main floor for more useful floor space. Bonus, spiral staircases are bad (where I live building codes doesn’t allow them to be added due to safety issues). As others have stated look into a residential elevator for the one staircase by your bedroom (or at least plan for the elevator for future).

It would not be possible beacuse he would need to have a long concrete shaft thru his home that goes almost to the roof and he would need a machine room either in the attic or in the basement. He would also need to use it all the time just so elevator would work properly

Two observations: 1. That's a lot of bathrooms. I'm not sure that ever bedroom needs its own bathroom. 2. The spiral staircase that connects to the master, basement and upstairs. should be framed to be able to install an elevator in the future, if it is needed someday.

HOLY COW, the house size is more than tripling? I remember way back when he talked about tearing down the old garage and building an underground movie theater and I could swear he said something like "but that will be quite a few years from now". But then they just went and started it now. And at that point I assumed of course the upper floors would connect to the house, but I didn't expect a whole other addition to those upper floors outside of the footprint of this new basement. Dang, its definitely going to be one heck of a mansion at this point. And now the master bedroom is in the new addition? So much new info here.

Based on the idea for your dream Library by your office with all of the dark wood crown molding and dark wood trim I really hope you kept all of the antique crown molding and trim that you took out of the house when you did all of the demo and you promised that you would be saving all of that. It can all be incorporated into your Library, offices, kitchens, etc....in one area of the house or another. I really look forward to all of THAT PART of your renovation to come together in the future when you start reusing some of All That crown molding decorative trim an antique doors.

This is a good idea. He could design in an elevator shaft now and use the space as storage closets on each floor. Then if he wanted an elevator in the future it's pretty simple to put it in. Much easier to put in an elevator if the basic structure is already there.

As someone who has a good chance to be in a wheelchair in my dotage, I’d highly recommend an elevator while it’s so easy to put in. At the very least it’d be worth it to plan it out now. Zack Nelson (JerryRigEverything) put in a great residential one for his wife. The video is here on YT.

I’ve been watching you for many years and enjoy your adventures and family dynamics. I have to say though that your home plans are amazing and I enjoy watching the evolution of it all, however I think you must take some real time going up and down spiril stair cases to understand the dynamic off using them. You seem quite romanticizes by having them, but they really aren’t practical for daily use and are quite dangerous when you have anything in your arms or hands when navigating their use. They seem like such a fun and beautiful item to have, but for as many as you have in the home I think you are going to regret having so many in critical places for coming and going. Think about how much you will be going up and down from the locations you have them and possibly a standard staircase in a few of those places you would actually be more practical. Some food for thought. Good luck.

@41:56 For your upstairs laundry. Build a shallow tub and attach a plastic panel to the wall behind your washer behind your attachment hoses, with a vent hose to the outside. That way if your washer fails or a hose bursts the water is going into the tub and out of the house rather into the drywall, floor and downstairs.

Do a little furniture shopping now with a measuring tape - most of the stairs and doorway openings will make furniture near impossible to get in some of your rooms - I get the library spiral stair but the the rest should be regular 36” stairs and I would do 36” wide doors as well, they look grander and allow for wheelchair access if ever required - the distant future will require accommodations for a family member as you never know how anyone ages. I think a 1st floor in- law suite for any long term guests would be very useful. You could also rent it out for a farm hand or nanny.

If I had one bit of advice for you on your absolutely BEAUTIFUL home design, I would put in an elevator that accesses all 3 levels. one day you will be old and if you only have all those staircases it may be problematic to add it later. If one of you ends up wheelchair-bound or you need to move a big item an elevator would come in handy. I am so excited watching all this come together for you, Nave, and the boys.
