OMG! When you wove that pointed wattle door I was so excited! I suddenly knew for the first time why that pointed top shape became the classic that it was. I always thought it was so impractical before, when I would see it carved in stone on churches etc. But now I realize it could have just become part of the culture because it was very practical at first, and even if it wasn't practical later it was still beautiful.
@gesithasgewissa
@gesithasgewissa 11 күн бұрын
Exactly! Beauty was much more admired than today in most architecture, I feel. There was also another benefit to having a pointed door, as it was a smaller opening with the same height, meaning it may have let out slightly less heat.

I have pretty bad tinnitus that makes it hard to get to sleep unless I have something in the background. For months now, the original series has been my go-to. Something about the sound of the work and nature is quite relaxing for me, and the duration is long enough that I'm soundly asleep before it all goes silent and my tinnitus bothers me.

@jamesgreen5298
@jamesgreen5298 3 күн бұрын
@KimberlyCook-j3o It's more of a constant hiss for me. The tuning fork sound only happens occasionally when I've been exposed to something particularly loud.
@PeterGriffin-fk7bd
@PeterGriffin-fk7bd Күн бұрын
@@KimberlyCook-j3o It gets worse the more silence comes and the more I focus on it and idk what you guys are hearing but it's more like a buzzing or the sound effect ppl use after using flash bang in games so that maybe helps I've been having for over 2 years now longer than anyone here😅 what id suggest don't have anything to loud or to low have it at perfect sound that it doesn't end up making it noticable also there's no treatment for it sadly

This was just as amazing perhaps even more so than the first time I watched it. I can’t help but see the young couple who are putting their first home together and she says but it’s so dark and dingy, can’t we have a brighter colour, and he says‘you can have any colour as long as it’s brown’!

There are numerous natural cordage plants in the UK from pine roots to, nettle stems and roots to bramble stems all extremely strong but not necessarily long lasting but all had their uses by our ancestors. So much bushcraft knowledge has been lost over time with little need to use it because technology took over from these natural uses. But none of us knows what the future holds, from wars to volcanic disasters and could one day be the lifeline of humanity again for some to have this knowledge that then can be spread and expanded on. Its the in thing at the moment but future generations need to be taught some of this so that humans can survive what ever catastrophe arises .

I've enjoyed watching all of these. Recently I made a cape for a friend and used old "Army" blankets. All very good wool. Very warm and made pants with some of it too. It has an inner hood made to fit close to the head and the outer hood is loose and lays over the shoulders like a capelet when not in use. You can make the ties with just strips of wool you have left in scraps. My friend wanted me to line it for comfort since the wool is scratchy in places he says. I used some natural colored Osnaburg. It use to be made with flax, but mine isn't. Flannel would be warm too. Just wanted to share this with you thought you may like to use it. You can find these old blankets in Military Surplus stores. I just cut a circle and use half of it for the cape. Ties down the front. I made my own pattern. Anyway, Loved your videos today and looking forward to more. Stay warm!

What was your favourite and least favourite parts? What do you plan on doing next? I s there anything you wish you had done differently? Do birds nest in the roof? Wow, even though you make the process of building a medieval house look easy, I know very well that it took a lot of time and effort! I applause to you sir for your skill and patience. The filming and editing of the video also is good. I really like the video, although there's been one question I wanna ask. What will happen to this awesome home you've built? Are you gonna leave it in the woods and let mother nature reclaim it, or maybe you have something else in mind?

Thank you very much! I will be using the house as a base for future craft projects, and will probably extend the farmstead with a few more buildings -- I'd like to maintain and repair the house for now, but I imagine that, eventually, when I stop using it, it will be reclaimed by nature after many years!

Mesmerizing as always. One thing I'd love to see more of is your process for identifying good trees. A lot of these segments start with a pile of logs you've already felled and at least partially stripped. Like the two main supports you had to dig the pits for, really long and straight and with a Y-fork at the top, how long did it take you wandering in the woods looking up to identify two smallish trees that met those criteria?

Love it! What is the purpose of the two little raised tabs you carved into the upper window door? Or was that even a door? Not sure what was going on there with that. Video was amazing!
@gesithasgewissa
@gesithasgewissa 9 күн бұрын
Yes, a window shutter - the tabs were so that it could be closed securely from the inside. Even if the hinges get cut, the window stays closed from inside. Thanks for watching!

There's no evidence that the Early Anglo-Saxons used large timber-saws for woodworking, either in the tool finds or tool-marks. So they most likely used axes for hewing out everything!

I've watched all of the shorter videos of this, but I don't remember, did you ever go over what kind of shelter a person of this time and place might have been staying in while he was building the house? Also, where did you learn these skills?

I was wondering if pit houses suffer from water infiltration into the pit or flooding, or is the roof overhand so wide that the water never gets to the pit? Thanks and we love you
@gesithasgewissa

They can do - I did actually have to raise the floor as I had the groundwater levels rise in winter - they were usually built on gravel or sand soils, but i am on clay so I should have taken that into account haha! I'm hoping to release a video explaining the that aspect soon.
