For your large door, two modifications you should make: 1. You need a diagonal brace to prevent it from warping while being raised. Over time the frame will fatigue and you’ll end up with a potato chip. You can add 1.5x1.5x 0.187 angle iron to the bottom inside edge as your brace. Orient the angle so the legs are down and horizontally “inside”. It will be a trip hazard inside when closed, but the strength is much better in that orientation. 2. Move the ram jack to a lower point so the fulcrum is to your advantage. The jack it so close to the top so you’re lifting way more weight.

@OverlandUnderBudget 13 күн бұрын
Yes sir! Good observations, I plan to stiffen the door and mention this at 23:50 but I should have dedicated a longer clip for this. For the jack mountain points, your right lower would give more leverage, however it would also not lift the door to 90 degrees. I’m limited by the max length of the jacks and haven’t found any that have a longer stroke. Every inch the mounting point moves lower on the door, equals about 4/5 inch’s in hight at the end. Since the jack is fully compressed when the door is closed you can’t simple move the bottom mounting point higher to compensate they both have to positioned together. Ideally I would have a 4-4.5 foot stroke jack, and I could it 25% down the door (24 inch’s from hinge point) but the jack I’m using is only 42-44 inch stroke and that is why it’s mounted at such a disadvantage. Looking for a longer stroke jack to eventually improve this!

@@OverlandUnderBudgetas a “for now” you could take a piece of square tube for each ram and notch it to fit over the rod. That way you can open the door and slide the locks over the cylinder rods.

That is very cool. I work for a Military Contractor and we've had several portable shop containers that are setup the same way with the door hinges from the top, they're pretty self sufficient with generator, compressor, hose & power reels, hydraulic systems including cranes, stocked tool boxes, etc... sometimes they air drop them by parachute into some areas. Would be cool to buy one in surplus. One suggestion too beside the safety latch you mentioned would be a sill above the gap in your door so you could work in the rain under the door.

Amazing project! I love the door becoming a covered work surface. I really like the air over hydraulic lift solution. I would be inclined to add a counterweight that attached to the top middle of the door using a cable to a weight suspended on the back wall. If the attachment point was in front of the door face you would get no assist closed and maximum assist open. I’m probably not explaining this well with words, I need crayons.

You can safely remove all the sheet metal side of a shipping container, they are not structural. The corner columns are the structure and they hold all the weight when the containers are stacked.

Like a dream come true. Interesting build. The door is a big lever. It does need support spread out and also some mechanical means of positive locking open. Maybe an electric hoist and cable or a chain. The freedom of open access on the sides is needed. Great idea for the flooring. A third hinge in the middle of the left side door. Lot of those converted for the same use and shops, storage buildings. Roof it and add a shed roof on the side. Great place to hang out and work. Like the camper top on the Toyota. Good build. Huckberry has good products of all kinds. All good from east KY USA. What ever distance you lower the jacks down you can add back with the upper mounting point.

For the two air/hydraulic actuators - connect the two with a cut to length air hose (run it across the ceiling with P-clips for nice clean plumbing). Tap into the run with a Y in a convenient location where you place your valve and air quick connect. Now you've got one location one valve to run both rams together. Doesn't add convenience for door closure unfortunately

Awesome build. You should make the mechanical safety for that door a high priority, though. Oh, and your diagonal brace on the end door is the wrong way. 😀 Generally, diagonal braces on gates, doors etc should run from the bottom of the hinge side up towards the top of the free hanging side as that's the diagonal that wants to get shorter as the door sags. Although, in this application it probably doesn't matter.

Nice job other wise .. Thise horse mats would work well on top of your desk shelving as well ..

only thing i’d add and do different.. add a vent at the roof.. so when the large door is closed on a windy day, you can still get air inside and out when one side door is closed. add a heater.. would be cool to work on a cold rainy day while inside comfortable. lastly, which is part of the heating.. make it air tight.. prevent dust and debris from entering, not only animals and insects.

Use aircraft wire from HF to hold the door open. You have those vertical rails, attach them to the highest point, then put an eyelet and use a heavy duty carabiner to clip them on. So you use the rams to lift it, then clip the wires on. It is really cheap to do something like this. I have like 25 bucks into some support straps I needed to make for my shed.

I bought a 40' HC (B grade) for AUD $5k, 3 years ago when moving house. As my new house didn't have a workshop to store all my home shop equipment. I priced up storage units, and other temporary storage options and the container was a no brainer. I would have paid many times over for a storage unit. And with a container, I can sell it after and recoup majority of the purchase price. Moving was easy. Just load it up and side load it where ever I need. About $3-400 to move it via side loader. I purchased a set of container spindle adapters, and built them up with bearings and 5 stud landcruiser hubs. And borrower a set of Lcruiser wheels. Then I could roll it down my driveway as needed
@SkinnySkinch
@SkinnySkinch 16 күн бұрын
@ I’m going to have to look into those wheel adapters for it. Didn’t even know that was a thing.
@BramBiesiekierski
@BramBiesiekierski 16 күн бұрын
@SkinnySkinch yeah. They very handy. They say they only rated for a 20' and empty. But i moved a loaded 40'. The side loader driver told me his scales said total weight 10t. So that's like 2.5t per corner on flat ground, and even more if the ground is not perfectly flat. Tyre pressure needed to be up around 70-80psi. And it was sketchy as all he'll with so much weight. The tyres and wheels took it no problem. The bearings handled it. But the actual spindles themselves began to banana a bit. I ended up welding on 2 x 1" nuts to each adapter. That way I could wind them in/out and make fine adjustments to the steering as I rolled down the driveway. It also corrected the extreme camber I was getting from the spindles bending upwards. The ground pressure with such a load was immense. The asphalt driveway was subsiding below the tyres. I had to get half a dozen sleepers and use them as cribbing below the tyres so it didn't sink. Just leap frogging them down as I went. I used a 1t chain block, by hand, to pull it down the drive way the first time as I couldn't get vehicle access. But on a subsequent move I purchased an electric winch, and made that into a mount for the tow Hitch of my work cruiser. And could use a long rope and re-direct block off a very large tree at the back of the property.

That is awesome. Maybe add a couple of air tanks to help with the volume of air when the doors need raising and it would be easy to plumb them together to go up using one valve. I haven't looked because i haven't needed to remotely lower a bottle jack, but I bet you can just drill and tap the release to use a pipe thread and connect those together and use a metering valve to lower them. It is pretty critical that it doesn't have a failure of the plumbing system on the release lowering side, so I wouldn't use hose barbs, air hose and clamps on that side. Stainless tubing is pretty cheap and if you can do what I just saw in this video, you can easily master bending tubing..

Simple yet effective design, fits perfect on the pavement, looks all functional for its size. I'd love to make such a similar build one day. Structurally, I think the big door needs more work, to solve the buckling in the middle... A ratchet system that locks at every turn would be part of it. Maybe have the big door fold in half before it folds all the way up? I think it's something you'll realise when a car is parked too close to the shop and you're about to open the door. Good work!
