This video follows the building of my outdoor artificial grass putting green. I did all the labor myself and it took a lot of work as I live on the side of a hill up about 50 stairs. On flat ground where you could get materials and equipment much closer to the job it would save a lot of time. costs vary widely in each state for the materials and Hawaii is probably one of the most expensive so my total cost is probably at the high end of what you can expect. The cost came in at under $2000. Here is the breakdown of everything I used:
-landscape rocks free (already on my property)
-edging composite boards $60
-Stakes and rebar $50
-landscape led low voltage rock lights $245 for 7
-Vegetation killer $25
-Weed barrier $50
-Aggregate $375 delivered
-Mortar sand $40
-Plate compactor rental $75/day
=Water filled roller $20/day
-Cups $30 for 3
-Quick set mortar $20
-Artificial turf $700 (i got a deal because of the delivery time screw up) varies $3-$8 sqft depending on quality
-Infill sand $100
-Compressor and staple gun rental $100/day
-Stainless steal staples $25
-Chipping mat $50

Great job, man that was a labor of love. You saved a ton by doing it yourself, thanks for sharing and my hat is off to you, that was no easy feat.

jteddy11 I never videoed the 100 something journeys I made up the 50 stairs moving all the aggregate just with buckets! That was the toughest part. Thanks for the comment and the support.

Wow, maybe cheaper or easier to just poor concrete base. No weed block, less aggregate underneath, no weed killer. At the end of the day you put in all the ingredients of concrete except cement. Liked your video. So now you have had it for a couple years, any comments on you would change if you wanted to install another one?

Concrete creates too hard a surface with zero give so you can’t really chip on it and it doesn’t drain so water pools under the artificial turf. If I had to do it again I would add the rubber matt that goes under the turf to better replicate bounce. It probably adds another $500 but defo worth it if you will be chipping and pitching to it.

This is great. I have a landscaping business and am preparing to make one for a client of mine. I appreciate your detail and will use this video as a guide, if that is ok with you? Seems like you did everything with care.

tyler stanley I tried to. One thing you might want to consider if your client is going to chip from distance or pitch to it is to put a layer of special foam under the turf to give it a softer bounce for the ball. Thanks for the comment.

@@migmatisgolf Did you order equal parts gravel, pea gravel and sand? Im looking at quantities to order. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for responding.
@migmatisgolf
@migmatisgolf 4 жыл бұрын
tyler stanley be careful what you order. You are talking about pea gravel and that stuff is uniform in size and generally round in shape and will not compact well. It’s like trying to compact marbles. The bottom layer is a road base( basically what they use for the foundation of roads. It varies in rock size from 3/4 inch to dust. The next layer is a #4 which is nothing larger than 3/8ths and finally mortar sand which is basically crushed rock or limestone that looks like sand. The problem really is that different parts of the US call everything something different. Anyway, I went with 2 inches of road base, 2 inches of #4 and about a 1/4 inch of mortar sand. Here is the formula for knowing how much you need. For every 72 sq ft of putting green you need one ton of material for a 4 inch thickness. If you want 2 inch thickness of the road base then you need one ton for every 144 sq ft. Same thing for the #4. As for the sand I just guessed as it came in bags and I could return what I didn’t use. Hope that helps.

@@migmatisgolf Just wanted to give you an update. Today I laid down the gravel and the pea gravel, I have a hand tamper so its a workout! Tomorrow i will put down my mortar sand on top and tamp that down ,then its time for the turf. This has been fun and I can appreciate your hard work.

Why does everyone who builds a diy backyard putting green always say it has to be level ??? I have never played a course where all the greens were perfectly level
@migmatisgolf
@migmatisgolf 5 ай бұрын
I guess relatively level would be a more appropriate term. If you put too much slope on it the ball just roll too fast on these type of greens and you find you hate putting down hill cause the ball either goes in or off the green. Hope that helps.

Thanks. I got the turf from a company called “site one” I think they went bust during covid in Hawaii but still exist in other parts of the country.

Great job! I noticed at about 16:27, the tarp is covered in debris that's fallen from the tree. How important is it to remove this organic debris? My concern is that if I lay the artificial turf over top, the organic material will root in the sub base/sand and thus create a problem.

Good spot. I did t film everything but I did try and remove all debris I could before laying the crushed rock or the turf. One of the reasons i did multiple passes of vegetation killer was to prevent anything from germinating under the turf. It’s been a while now and haven’t had anything growing.

When making the holes for the cups did you by chance go through the weed barrier and into the sub base? I couldn’t tell if your cups were just short enough to end right at the bottom of the aggregate and above the weed barrier
@migmatisgolf
@migmatisgolf 3 жыл бұрын
The holes do not penetrate the weed barrier that is about 6 inches below grade that I installed before pouring the rocks.

How long did it take to get the infill to settle? I just brushed my green with the infill, but it seems to be staying on top of the turf. Any suggestions? Great job on your green!
@migmatisgolf
@migmatisgolf 4 жыл бұрын
christian1321 getting the infill to the bottom of the turf is a tough job manually. I guess I now know why the install companies use a motorised brush. The stiffer the broom the better as when you drag it or push the turf it separates the strands of artificial grass and allows the sand to drop to the base. It took me a whole day of going back and forward. I have also seen a compactor plate used to vibrate the turf and help the sand drop. Finally, I hope you got the correct grit of sand because if it’s not fine enough it won’t sink between the fibres.hope that helps. Thanks for the support.

How long did it end up taking you to broom in all of the infill?
@migmatisgolf
@migmatisgolf 3 жыл бұрын
I did it in a couple of stages because I used brown sand for the bottom of the turf and then the specialty green sand towards the top. Probably a good 4 hours for all of it.
