A shuriken is any handheld, thrown projectile. You're totally correct that a Ninja Star is a shuriken. And the best known one. But a throwing needle (super fun to throw, by the way) is also a shuriken but has a more specific name of a Senbon or Bo-Shuriken. Ninja stars, or Hira-Shuriken are what you more commonly think of. And are much easier to throw and get to stick. But once you can throw a straight, one-tipped little javelin.... pencils never look the same.
