Retail is a blast for people who have grown older and have jobs and families now. Classic WoW was great when I was 16 and I will always cherish those memories but I just can’t play a game like that now at my age with all the responsibilities I have.

I tried out retail wow recently. I hit max level in two days and had no idea how to play the class because levelling was so brain-dead easy. I quit after that. I guess I didn't need the entire month.

Dude - this is the video I’ve been looking for. I stopped playing after college about 10 years ago and have been focusing on a career and now that I have that stability in my life I want to get back into gaming. So I bought a high end PC and to play all the latest games at max setting but there is something about good ol’ fashioned WoW that is pulling me back in. I’m excited to join the community again! My buddy tied to get me into retail and i can count the 2 times i felt like oh man this is fun. The sum of my experience was a speed running simulator staring at a DPS add on to maximize damage... just over and over and over again. get a rotation down and nope changes next week. No point to anything and you run the same shit every week. Decided to try Hardcore on the new server drop and was like oh this is why people like this game. I'm having more fun on classic hardcore than i ever did on retail.

One thing i dont like about classic is that you dont have dual spec at least. Respecing is so expensive and just something that needs to be done from one moment to another when gameplay changes. For example a world pvp fight before raid entrance.

Retail sacrificed too much to be an expedient dungeon-racing game. The game used to be more than that, but now that's all there is. The narrative is heavy-handed political garbage, the outdoor world content is mindless and repetitive, the social experience has been neglected for the entire history of the game, the economy is pointless, professions remain a waste of time, faction identity is dead, racial identity is dead, classes are homogenized for competitive balancing so they don't have much fantasy either, and the business practices have never been more exploitative. As long as people love dungeon grinding, WoW will never die. But I haven't touched the game since Dragonflight (which changed none of that) and will likely never play again.

As casual player, I hate the raiding system. Why limit raiding only once a week? Mythic+ also so toxic. All the good items only drop in raid.

I hate the new scaling system. While progressing through levels you start to feel weaker instead of stronger. Once you hit cap you have to grind to feel strong again and then BOOM! NEW SEASON! Start all over again. World except for the newest expansions feels abandoned... Even in retail content you dont actually have to communicate with anyone :( It's still a great game in some kind of way, but a lot different from what it was. I spent 50$ on the expansion but still prefer to play some SoD or Cata from time to time. Retail doesn't hit me anymore.

You missed out that different classes/races start at level 10+, so skip the default starter zone. As someone the same returning to retail after a 10-year break. So here’s my breakdown: Levelling extremely easy 0 or 10 to 70 takes a few hours, and afternoon. If you have the time. Professions, this will take you weeks/months to level up due to the knowledge points system on primary professions. You need to be able to max out certain professional knowledge to access content. Skyriding is extremely confusing at first compared to traditional flying. Talent builds, extremely confusing at the start as you have 10s of spells which are mostly useless and never used. Wowhead is a life saver and saves loads of time. Gearing at end level is slow, as someone who didn’t get TTW yet as I wanted to learn how things work in DF before buying at 2 months into DF no Alts are fully geared for DF mythic/raid content. Addons are a must although Blizzard has made some great improvements to the UI some parts of the game are still annoying, Zygor is a must to get the most out of the game content. Follower dungeons are great way to skip queuing and dealing with toxic players as well a great learning and farming tool, although gear drops in dungeons is now extremely low and not guaranteed like before. My final thoughts retail is all about end-game content now the immersion comes from that, for new players the whole getting to 70 is great with time walking but very overwhelming and a lot of the learning curve has been taken out so they are end-game level and clueless 🙄 Knowledgeable and returning players levelling where you want is great but you can still do all the old content for rep and achievements as a choice.

Also I think that every zone should have quests specifically for leveling purposes that can be done at any level and campaign quests just for max level and end game content. That way pretty much every zone can get mileage no matter what level you are. Maybe have new zones have a server attunement so that public transportation is accessible for non max level players. And have a flat max level forever forward

I agree with most of your points except when you said blizzard had to cater to a casual Playstyle to save their playerbase. That's completely wrong and the numbers show, WoWs player base didn't decline because of lack of adaptation, it declined because OF their more casual focused approach.

There are many issues with modern WoW, but dragon riding makes up for all of it, I'm sorry but the old mount system was tedious and annoying, not fun, dragon riding alone makes modern WoW infinitely better. Like I genuinely don't understand how I ever played this game without it.

(D-)=(Mists of panda nonsense) turned me off wow retail. (S)=wrath of the lich king & og wow. (A+)=Burning Crusades. (B)=cataclysm. I don't care how good (legion) might be as I'm not going through panda nonsense let alone Warlords of Drandei=(F). We got 2 great expansion & 1 alright one in my opinion & that was the golden age of wow. retail today is not wow but something else that is unrecognisable! You got Furries & scaleies with all sorts of nonsense. Only way I'm paying for wow again is if classic; up to cataclysm has a branch off server with a new-seperate expansion from cataclysm as a seperate junction! i want nothing to todays retail wow.

The corolary of your argument is that anyone who doesn't enjoy the game because of how hand-holdy and easy it's become has no life and is playing the game as the purpose of their life. That's pretty insulting right there. And also false. I have a family, a full time job and hobbies/passtimes outside of gaming. I still hate retail WoW because it's a patronizing, watered down, handholdy participation prize fest. I enjoy classic/Hardcore/SoD because they have some actual challenge and grind to them.

Here's a take: retail is a sandbox, and theres a lot to do for a lot of different people Competitive? Pvp/M+ Solo players? Delve Hell you can even play this game just to collect awesome looking transmogs and or mounts. So i dont understand when people call retail bland or souless or whatever, the game as it is today is however you play it.

Where are you getting 8.5 million from? Also keep in mind that 8.5 million is split between five or so iterations of the game when back in the golden era one version of WoW held 12 million
