I've been to the cemetery for an event that a friend was showcasing his music creations. It was lovely. I've been to to the gardens twice, but never see the bear pit. In the late 70s, I heard the Ghostly story of the Halloween night rope. It was discovered on Cemetery Rd late at night winding through the General Cemetery on Halloween. Young kids tried to find where it led but no trace of its end was found as it wound around the Cemetery. The Rope itself was unusual; very thick, heavy and very dirty! The following day it was gone!

Many thanks for this. It must be a good thirty years since I was last in the General Cemetery. Back then it was quite neglected and even more overgrown. A Friend of the Cemetery took us round on a guided tour and I'm sure we were told that the catacombs were somewhat under subscribed, but the local hospitals would inter stillborn babies there. A sad thought. We've been to the Art in the Gardens before, particularly when my partner was exhibiting her paintings, but OH what a terrible day when you visited. I’m sure that the ‘Bears of Sheffield’ statues in 2021(ish) were based on the bear sculpture in the bear pit. The bears followed on from ‘The Herd of Sheffield’ in 2017, which were inspired (I’m almost certain) by Lizzie.
