Fun Fact : Ganga flows in 7 streams. Other streams merge together to make 2 main streams called Alakananda and Bhagirathi(which is considered as the original Ganga as per traditions). The confluence of these 2 streams is a great sight. These 2 streams merge at a place called Devprayag. And from here the river is known as Ganga. Ganga is also considered called Bhagirathi. It got the name from King Bhagirath(an ancestor of Lord Ram- Ramayana) who is credited to bring Ganga back to earth from the Heavens.

18:14 by "not clean" if you mean muddy, then it's not because of people washing themselves. Ganga originates from the Himalayas which is one of the youngest mountain ranges geologically, every monsoon large parts of the mountain break down in soil and minerals and get carried away by the river giving it its muddy color. This is also the reason the land around Ganga is the most fertile land anywhere on the planet, this is also referred to as the "terai" biome and it has several km deep rich fertile land in many places.

In earlier times, the Ganga River had unique microbiological properties, including bacteriophages, which helped kill viruses. This made bathing in the Ganga highly recommended. However, with the advent of the industrial revolution, the river has become so polluted that it is now almost unhealthy to bathe in it. Begging is illegal in India but remains widespread. Despite government support and NGOs, many beggars are controlled by gangs and often refuse, flee, or react aggressively when offered shelter.

The baptise concept of christianity ( Krishna neeti ) is taken from Hindu holy dip in river ritual. Actually the rituals starts from Mahakumbh when Jupiter planet complete one cycle around Sun after 12 years, so if one bathes in that special time of Mahakumbh then he or she can observe a lot of benefit. It is a very deep science so will explain later. Anyhow yeah we bath in mother Ganga but nowadays due to chemical soaps etc it is getting polluted but no issue before 2047 everything will be done what needs to be done.

1.Majority of Indians do wake up early, for one reason or the other. But primarily, 3AM to 5AM is considered Brahmamuhurta, or time when Brahma wakes up, and thus its considered a positive time to wake up in. Plus, gives you a good head start for the rest of the day. And yes, the latitude difference comes into play, we don't often has sunlight post 8PM, even during Summer solstice. Hrishikesh is hilly, so the sun virtually sets earlier than say a plainer region. 2. Majority Indian names have some link to godly figure - Rama, Shiva, Shivam, Shivang, Mahendra (derived from Indra), Vishnu, Krishna etc. It's considered auspicious. 3. Small patches of Ganga around Delhi and Uttar Pradesh are polluted, majority is quite clean. If you visit Uttarakhand, and that too upper reaches of Rishikesh and Devprayag, you'll be able to see the green hue to the river, with bubbles as in boiling milk. Plus, the Ganga has self-cleansing properties, thus if given time, can purify itself quicker than an average river. 4. They're probably dressed the same for this particular trip, we don't have uniforms for work, for the most part. 5. I suppose majority of the food classifies as spicy to a non-native. Green chillis are liberally used while cooking and consumed raw as well. But you can always request no spice or little spice in your food. Since you'll be visiting tourist places, these requests wouldn't seem out of place. 6. Every clothing item has an attached tag on the back end, with its cloth composition. While they say it's 100% cotton, its usually 80:20 or 90:10 ratio, mixed with polyester or some variant of it, alongwith the cotton. 7. Yes, we fry a lot. A rainy day and fried potato+onion = 100 8. That's pretty standard population density. Blink and you miss kinda situation. Its way more dense during Kumbha Mela. 9. Ganga is said to purify the soul and cure ailments, thus the bath. PS: I would suggest visiting the Himalayas, but skip major places like Haridwar or Rishikesh. These are decent places, but there are better lodgings and experiences in terms of food, crowd control etc further up in Himachal Pradesh or northern Uttarakhand.

this is the place where people want to lay their life... This is the place where people come to die... Specially aged peoples... It is not called begging, it is called Bhiksha... I don't know what would be the correct word for Bhiksha... They leave everything behind to live here in the open... around the river ganga... They will beg you for food for survival... When they are fully dedicated to spiritualism, they have completely given up everything... they rely on us to help them with food to survive... it's an old age tradition... Saints, or monks doesn't get paid... we won't ask you to give them money directly, but if you wish you can give me either food or some money so they can live... And it is super busy and crowdy in summer... Come to India in December or January when there is a peak winter... You will find less people in public places... Also, when you come to rishikesh, prefer going mountains... You'll will a lot of people around river ganga in plains... Hill and mountains are isolated... There is a town 40 km from here, called devprayag.. You can go there for a beautiful experience... Coincidentally I'm in Rishikesh and will be here for a while. Let's see. And one great misunderstanding of extreme poverty image, they (seekers) are not begging because of poverty of anything. To be on spiritual path, you've to leave everything of your past behind and survive not on earning but on Bhiksha. It's a yogic kriya, in sadhana of every sanyasi or any spiritual seeker, meant to kill false identities. There is no translation for Bhiksha in English, but at surface level, it looks like begging only but not because they lack anything(they already left business, comforts, families, they had everything before). Bhiksha is a kriya, meant for killing ego, a way to become humble and the most effective tool to break false egos, you have about yourself. I'm a developer but 8 months I lived on Bhiksha, while preparing for Mahashivratri and shivanga sadhana. So, you guys and even Indians need to understand this, it's deeper than what it looks at surface. Heart of Spirituality for no reason. Later.

We revere Ganga as our mother and believe that bathing in the Ganga washes away our sins. Ganga carries a lot of silt from the Himalayan erosion and that's why it looks dirty but is actually benign, at least in the mountainous region. In India stick to boiled rice, 'roti', dal (lentils) and eggs and these won't be spicy. June is the hottest time in India and temperatures can soar up to 50 degrees Celsius in the plains. After this, there will be torrential rain subsequent washout. Come in the junction of September and October.

Foreigners prefer Rishikesh mostly because of the spiritual opportunities rather than its scenic beauty and also because of the promotional activities done by travel bloggers like this guy here. I personally didn't find Haridwar to be overcrowded but that's always subjective. Places like Kedarnath and Badrinath have many scenic spots to explore besides the religious shrines. But I mentioned them because of their proximity to Rishikesh even though many other hill stations exist across the nation spreading well beyond the Himalayan range.

Hey Zuzana : At the very outset, let me be very clear on India food. Indian food is usually spicy (meaning made out if a lot of spices). The bar level on a scale of 10 would be a 4 to 5. In c ase of spicy it would be 7 on the bar scale. Usually clothes available in India are made of pure cotton. In the hills the other alternative is Wool. It is very difficult to find anything artificial like plastic or other synthetic materials. But Yes, you may find wind cheaters and other clothing made of synthetic material. But cotton is openly available and is fairly cheap.

Just a heads up: no matter how much you prepare for Bharat - you will never really LEARN until you step foot on her soil - DO NOT expect anything similar to Europe or you will be highly disappointed. Expect more chaos and noise than you can imagine you have EVER experienced. Sensory overload for sure. I LOVE my Bharat. But the first experience will be extreme and can go either way

Ganges or Ganga in Rishikesh and other places up North in the mountains or closer to Himalayas ---- is at its cleanest as it is then within the hills. It is only when it hits the cities it get dirty and polluted.

5:17 Yes it's pretty normal to name after Shiva or from Hinduism. But generally it's not directly named I think , the names can be Adi or Adinath ( another name of Shiva , means oldest one ) Niladri ( the blue ones mean Shiva ) or like Madhav ( krishna ) , Aditya (Sun God Surya)............

South Indian food is usually less spicy, always tell the waiter you prefer less spicy, cloth you can touch and feel the material it's usual in India, pure cotton cloth is usually more expensive so you can Identify that way, if you like the Ganga, I recommend you visit even Parvati river in Himachal Pradesh district Sosan. Common Indian names are, Ganesh, Krishna, Ram, Shiva these are all God names too. Yes when in the Himalayan mountains try and live in a wood and stone house as they are very cosy, the concrete and brick house can be very cold or hot. In the mountains you tend to trek and walk a lot so please enjoy the heavy food. Don't worry it will not show on your waist😅.

#Zuzana, you are looking at a turbulent Ganga carrying mud. Ganga water is a bit muddy. If you call that unclean that is your opinion. But the water quality is very good at least till Varanasi. In Varanasi and a bit downstream, you will see Gangetic dolphins. Yes people take dip in Ganga where Ganga is not so turbulent. Also in varanasi, people come to die in their old ages. There is a ghat where the fire of the crematoriums burn 24x7. It is called the Manikarnika ghat. And the ashes are thrown in Ganges. BTW, Ganges is very rich in bacteriophages and is put in the mouth of a dying person to preserve the body for long before it can be burnt. Instead of trying to judge, absorb it. If you are able to absorb the energy, you will find great things. Otherwise, just come as a tourist and go back empty handed.

Patanjali yog Peeth near haridwar is a must visit Zuzana, it's probably world's largest yoga and ayurveda research centre, Also about Ganga, we call it "Ganga Maiya" which means mother ganga it has always been worshipped in our culture to the most highest extent, even today when we perform any yagya or important Pooja anywhere in the world we use ganga water to prey, though the river has got dirty but love for the river still stands in the heart of people, Ganga river's cleanliness depends on several factors for example in the places near the Himalayas where siltation is less there the water will be more clear in rishikesh also at certain places it will be clear and in certain places it won't, also to mention the time of year when more people visit the place the water is likely to be dirty as they take bath in it and also many people throw litters in the river so if less tourist visit at a time of year that time it will be clean, The importance of ganga for a Hindu can be understood by the fact that when a Hindu dies the ashes of burnt body are supposed to be put in ganga river as it's believed that would give salvation to the soul.

Hi, I wouldn't suggest you to visit in June, not only this year is getting crazy hot, but the rainfall might be dangerous this year. Already for past few years we in Uttarakhand have been experiencing lots of landslides and floods. So it's not safe to visit in summers or monsoons. Summers is also rush season due to Char Dham Yatra, our pilgrimage to holy shrines, so roads would be most probably packed. Monsoons is also the time when Ganga is mostly murky, not the beautiful river and beaches as shown in the video. To see the real beauty of Uttarakhand, either visit after september when monsoons have ended, or atbthe end of winters, feb march april. And if you're planning to visit India, then I would suggest you to start eating spicy to start develop tolerance for spicy food, esp the masala spicy type of food. Whatever you decide just have fun.

All spices aren't spicy. For example we use curcumin, that gives colour to the food but is very good for the health. If you order a dosa then ask for sada (plain) dosa. This will be good in taste but will not be spicy. Alongwith the dosa they will serve sambhar that might be mildly spicy but should be manageable. Best is to eat the dosa with coconut chutney. Mind the chutney maybe mixed with water so you have to be careful eating the chutney. You could get an upset stomach. So either you eat food that is hot temperature wise or go to a really nice upscale restaurants for your meals as the hygiene levels will be far better. Besides dosa you should try idlis. They're made out of rice and steamed. They're also served with sambhar and chutneys. Cuisine in the North like Hrishikesh is on the milder side but when you place your order emphasize that you want mild spices other wise you will find it difficult to consume. After ordering your meal as mild but if you are served with very spicy food don't hesitate to return the order asking for getting food that you ordered as mild.
