Few observations as someone who's been visiting for 15+ years (last there Feb 2023; back next month): - Weird seeing Taco Bell and Burger King on WS - It was inevitable more Indian-themed discos would emerge. And they're all concentrated in the same area - Seems only a matter of time before an Indian-themed gogo appears (Indian branding, decor, music, outfits etc.) - The Russian establishments has also increased; I've never set foot in one due to the bad reputation they get - I guesstimate 15% of the units are either up for rent or vacant (bad sign) - It does look better with the power cables now underground - That gogo only opening on weekends is odd, be interesting to know their reasoning for that - Seems there's the fewest number of gogos that I can remember (the 'big' ones seem to be dominating the market on WS) I wonder what WS will look like in 5-10 years from now... Nothing stays at the top forever. The city is a living organism that's forever evolving. I won't go as far as saying Pattaya's best days are behind it, but it's not the same place we all used to know and love.

Their are currently more girls working In gogo's than ever before, the numbers of gogo establishment's are probably the same as pre-covid, the size of the buildings has increased with more double units or larger. Previously most gogo were single units on walking street, you can check back on Google maps as far back as 2012, the number of gogos has increased dramatically. I'm not sure why people think it's weird having a Burger King or Taco Bell as Mc Donalds has been there for over a decade. Dolls only opening at the weekend Is a management decision, they keep both LK Metro bars opened during the week days though, none of the girls know why either. The Russian places used to be located more where Flexx Club Is, but that area has been dead since before covid, so they moved, usually to upstairs locations on Walking Street. Quite a lot of these "Russian" places contain very few Russians and are also all not owned by Russians. This Is not directed at yourself, but how can so many people get annoyed with Indians In Pattaya considering they have been there for decades, they go to their own clubs (mostly) and Pattaya Is a city two time zones away In Asia.

I'll never forget the sheer madness and debauchery of Walking Street 20 years ago when I first started coming to Thailand. So many of my best Pattaya memories occurred on Walking Street. I've visited the place several times this year and I was saddened by what I saw. It's a shadow of the place it was and unfortunately it's become the epitome of everything that is wrong with both Pattaya and the world in general these days. Things change over time, that's inevitable, but whether they change for the better or not is a different matter. Walking Street now is a reflection of what happens when a place becomes over commercialised, globalised, and loses its soul. Now it's just a place full of go go bars selling extortionate drinks, Indian discos, Russian clubs (why go on holiday if you want what you get back home?) and Chinese tourists being led around in groups so that they can learn about the history of the place. The JP Bar was replaced by a hip hop club and even the Windmill is tame now, that tells you everything you need to know about the decline of the street. I have no wish to be a miserable expat banging on about how things were better "back in the day" but those that have been coming to Pattaya for 20 years or more will know exactly what I am on about and there is nobody that can convince me that Walking Street is better now than it was 20 years ago when it was probably the world's most debauched street. RIP Walking Street.

I’ve been going to Pattaya and of course Walking Street for over 40 years. I even lived in Northshore Condo for 3 years and my feelings are much the same as Trevor’s. Walking Street has lost its mojo. Ok, I haven’t been for 5 years now as I have a home elsewhere but what I recall about the Indian and Chinese tourists is that they spend very little money. Indians 6-10 to a double room. Girls only from the “Coconut Bar” and when girls went back to their room, there’d by always more than one wanting a go for the same price. As for the Chinese, almost all are on cheap all inclusive holidays and they’re not spending money in bars etc. They arrive everywhere in coaches and specialise in decimating buffets. This is how it was 5 years ago so I left. From what I see on Trevor’s channel, I don’t think I’d enjoy Pattaya much nowadays. The current demographics is not something most westerners would enjoy. Perhaps up Soi 6, Buakao, LK Metro or The Dark Side will be ok for a while until they consume these areas too. Fortunately I remember the good old days of the Tahitian Queen, the Windmill and Soi’s 6, 7 & 8. Definitely will not be paying Walking Street a visit. Great video Trevor. Thanks for the update.

I started going In the late 90s and try to visit every trip. My last visit to Pattaya was last year and I went down walking street once in the 4 days in town. The street has changed so much these last few years, and now feels like a tourist trap for families to enjoy some sleezy feel of the past. When I started going to Pattaya there was 2 streets called Pattayaland 1 and 2 a bit further along beach road which were full of go go bars also. Then times felt like the peak time.

I was in pattaya in August and one night I took the baht bus down to terminal 21 to eat at the food court. Then I decided to walk back to the bukaoi area via beach road and walking street for fun. It was interesting to see the areas where I stuck out like a sore thumb for being a “westerner.” Honestly when I was on walking street the whole time I felt out of place for many different reasons. I think what bummed me out the most is how certain demographics seemed to treat the Thai people (who I’ve come to absolutely love) with what to me is extreme disrespect.

good god how horrible it has become. My first visit was in 2004. I been 15 times. Last trip was in 2019. Oh the memories. The Sea, The Carousel, Marine Disco, Super baby and all its neighbors on that little area. FLB a fine place to sit and chat. Living Dolls. For all those years I visited a few times each year it was welcoming to go and see the same familiar places. Hot Tuna. Was so planning on semi retiring there but it just got less attractive year after year. Now the pending taxation of foreign income paperwork is the nail in the coffin. I will visit as I retire next year but won't be a long stay visitor. I personally think 2004 was about the peak and best years there. Beach road had flower beds, benches to sit on, the trees were not butchered and chopped down. I didn't want the big Central Festival mall. I got malls here in the USA. Garden Mall and the Big C mall with its cinemas down by the now gone Dolphin roundabout was just fine for my getaway. I loved Carre4 and thought it had a better and different selection than Big C which it now is. I miss the internet cafes. Met some nice ladies in there and for 10 or 30 baht an hour it was fun to stop in and check email or browse a few things. Didn't have nor need an expensive fancy Smart Phone back then. Life was simpler. Eastiny Place on Soi 8 now closed which was my first stay hotel in September 2004. Soi Yume was not fully paved and my buddy always stayed at Nantana Garden up that way. Oh well. Its not working. Very wealthy Indians came in and built massive super clubs. They have big overhead in entertainment. These wealthy Indians overestimated the market. Indians won't spend thousands of on expensive bottles of Champaign. More importantly, the Indian market doesn't tip. Westerners won't set foot in these clubs. Thais won't work at these establishments so the owners bring in labor from India (slaves, confiscated passports, they sleep in the club in the early mornings and work 100 hours a week) . Eventually, these Super clubs lose so much money that even the wealthy owners don't want to keep them afloat, so they close after about a year. Russian and Chinese establishments have a similar issue. Theses cultures don't tip and as a result they can't get or keep local Thia labor. Bar girls won't work in these places. This was the error. Westerners tip. Establishments that cater to Westerners can survive. However, the western market is leaving Pattaya (because of the growing influence of Indian and Chinese culture) and shifting to Phuket.

The 2-week blast has lost some bang for the buck, but living there long term has become more satisfying.

Started coming 2007 - spent almost every night in Walking Street - year on year until other areas appealed more to me since 2015. Main reason prices for beer and lady drinks went sky high and the freindlyness dissappeared and all you could see was Greed. There will always be Super Rich Russians and Indians so now this is the place for them. I would though still go to the Clubs Late at Night but dont have a chance when its full of Korean, Japanese and Arab Guys throwing their money everywhere. The days of me being Handsome Man long gone and spending 30000 THB a night just to impress is not me. I just go for the Music. Not to worry though other areas improving all the time so Pattaya still a great City and I will always be back year after year but just not Walking Street. Thanks for Update Trev.

I don't really understand why they think Pattaya would or should become a family friendly destination - the beach is awful, and the area isnt attractive for a "normal" holiday destination. Its attraction likely now is value, very cheap for families - when that goes why on earth would they go to Pattaya? After having driven out the party element what will be left? And where in the world or in Thailand can replace Pattaya? Nowhere. It would be sad to see such a unique destination disappear - why shouldnt there be such 1 destination available in an increasingly sterilised world.

@@jlhkia I guess that is why you could see quite a few new shop fronts and signs. They needed to get their neon on the front rather than the overhanging signs.
@jlhkia3 ай бұрын
@@StephenWestrip Well no, they did not. It was the local authority that imposed the measure which when implemented destroyed the character of the road. Further, having the signs over the road is far more effective at indicating the location of an establishment than relying solely on the signage facing into the street - that is why they were used all over the world in the first place.
@StephenWestrip3 ай бұрын

@@StephenWestrip You posted a reply that did not reflect what happened. The new fronts you are seeing are generally installed as the ownership changes and/or the bar premises are refurbished. The removal of the neon signs over the street has made it harder to locate establishments and has contributed to changing the character of the area.

I spoke about this the other year when you did that previous walkthru Walking Street. Pattaya is maturing as a general tourist destination so it’s logical the famous Walking Street becomes a place where tourists can bring their families to. You’re gonna see older buildings converted and some torn down for new hotels. You got money and ability to purchase property, now’s the time to buy anything along the street and convert downstairs into retail. There’ll be a huge demand eventually for restaurants, retail stores. All of the adult oriented places will move up to Bukahao, Tree Town and other places. Instead of being gutted by it, embrace it for what it is and profit by it. At the very least, buy some lower priced condos with unobstructed views of the ocean. Can’t go wrong. On the island of Maui, oceanside studios couldn’t find buyers at $19:000. Ten years later it was over $200,000 and today after 40 years those same units are at least $1.5 million. All the while earning you rent because there’ll always be a demand for ocean view rooms.

Well, first of all, thanks for showing me/us all of walking street. I was there for 2 weeks and did walk max the half of it once and then only entered from the side soi straight to where i wanted to go. Even if I go to Pattaya for almost double your time, i am sorry but i can not tell you what was what. I never really was interested in the part between where you lost your motorbike and the pier because over priced restaurants. I used to walk up and down WS but i don't really do that anymore. Sadly, some of your informations is outdated. Example Baccara hasn't opened the upper floor since 4-5 years so all you could see is darkness right now. Peppermint was good many years back but since the new boss (just before pandemic) i don't think it's still good. The gogo across from 79 to be honest, i am happy it closed. Some years back i did go inside and i was almost the only guest there but even after 15 minutes there, still no woman came to sit with me. Then 5 korean guys came in and even before they got their drinks, they all had 1-2 women sitting there. Pinup/X's well, how useful is it to have 120+ girls but almost none talk with customers and all 120+ women are still there when the place closes?? Pinup was a name that came up often so one night last month, coming out from Baccara at 2am, i decided to go to Pinup. The place was packed, almost no place to sit, the stage packed of women (to the point they could not dance and maybe just sway left and right) but almost nobody was drinking with a woman and clearly nobody took women home. Maybe good for business but not good for customers. To compare it, Baccara had probably only 80-90 girls and when i left, there was maybe 20-30 left. Apart that I know what they asked (last year) on X's for barfine / the girls and i know they reduced it this year but still way to expensive. Sadly you didn't show what i considered the best places before the pandemic and those are in the soi next to Moon: (Ex) Beach Club and the Happy a gogo. RIP because the owner died while the pandemic. Moon is closed since 1 year or so. Shark was in the soi (15?) where Sapphire is and just came onto WS 2-3 weeks ago. You can even see the old sign on the soi in your video. Windmill is not only on the lefthand side but both sides. X's was Miami Chick was Panda a gogo and Ivy a gogo Opium was the Golden Club and before that the Sugarbaby a gogo (the last had the same deal as the Windmill). All 3 not really long lived. Dolls is another of those places that i wish would go and never come back. Had a bad experience there when a woman outside that i liked, pulled me in, took my order for drink and after bringing it to me, she did go straight out again leaving me alone. The mamasan came to me and made the gesture to me showing me the "leftovers" inside the bar that was nothing like the girls outside. I said that i came inside because i liked the woman that pulled me inside. She just ignored me. I then asked her if she understand english and she said yes. So i asked again, i would like to tlak with the girl that pulled me inside and she proceded to just ignore me again. I then asked for what the woman are outside if the customer (yes, i was alone in there) is inside. She answered that they are outside to look for customers. When i asked her who will take care of the customers that are inside the bar, she proceded to ignore me again. Please go bankrupt and (sorry) make the mamasan get hill so that she can not do the same BS again. Zab and the 7/11 are casualities of the pandemic. Well, as conclusion, the question is if it is the place (bar/gogo) that matters, the women in it or the staff. Personally I not really care about the place. If it is clean enough, have places to sit and something to drink, it is ok. Actually those big and shiny places are places that i avoid. If they have spend so much money to make it look like that, the prices in it will probably be higher as well so better let them as "last resort" that usually will never come because i probably go home alone before the last resort. The staff matters to me more than the place for sure but what matters most, are the women. Things have changed and everybody that goes to thailand 10+ years will tell you that and sure, part of it that we changed as well but the rules and women changed. I just cought myself talking to a friend and asked me about my fixation with thai women/asian women and i told him that many years back, i could walk around Pattaya with closed eyes, pick a random women and have good chances that she was at least acceptable looking and the prices cheap (sure, gogo was less cheap but still worth go to thailand). Now a day you can not do like that anymore. I compare it to we changed from a nice and friendly waitress where you could exchange some nice words even before ordering to a vending machine where you not really see the products, not really see the prices and you have to put in money before you can get something out of it. Sadly Pattaya will never be the same again.
