As a former Goodwill employee let me share some fun facts!!!! So depending on the goodwill you go to the items will vary not just depending on the type of community but because of the managers (and staff slightly) as the managers tell the staff what items they want to sell, so if a goodwill has no games and only clothing thats the reason! Also YES staff hides the good stuff in the back! They will set aside things that they like and it wont make it to the floor! ANYTHING they think is worth alot WILL GO ONLINE not instore!!!! so any good jewelry or tech or games will go there!!! ANYTHING they didnt sort gets sent to a whole sale center!!! So if you think youll see that stuff you donated on the floor theres a low-medium chance (more on the low side) SO in short you want tech go online, you looking for specific types of items then go to a goodwill with that type of community and be careful what you donate as well!

where i live there are a few goodwills but it seems like only one of them ever has any computers or tech stuff. I always wondered if they just consolidated all the tech at that one store. But the weird thing is its not in a good part of town. Its not the biggest or nicest goodwill in town. But its the only one ive ever found any good tech at. I got super lucky one time and picked up a dell optiplex 9020 for like 10 dollars with the cpu and ram (they always seem to take the ram out before they put it on the floor). Then i found like 6 original xboxs in "not working" for like 6 dollars apiece. I only bought two of them because i wanted someone else to get a deal too but man i should have gotten all of them because the 2 i tested work fine except for a malfunctioning disc tray on one, but i plan to softmod it so the disk tray wont be a problem anyway.
@matta18995 ай бұрын
I asked the staff at my local drop-off location about the "good" stuff, and was basically told anything of value is put in a bin to be sent to their online distribution center to be sold there.... So no Goodwill finds will ever be found in my area.

All items should make it out to the floor per corporate policy and you will get in trouble for keeping items for yourself. However you are allowed to buy an item on the floor during an unpaid break.

At that point your better off buying lightly used tech from people second hand in eBay or Mercari. Goodwill's site prices are worse, they don't thoroughly test the tech and it's frequently dirty and broken AND they overcharge for shipping.

I feel so old. Up until last year when I finally bought a Nintendo Switch for my wife my latest consoles were PS2 and Dreamcast. Both purchased when they were at end of life. I guess I did get an Xbox 360 for a bit for my roommates in college. I also owned that EXACT Dell computer and had it upgraded like crazy to do video editing. It was my last PC before I switched to exclusively Mac’s for my professional work. Gave it to my nephew to play around with all the junk I had on it. Running XP of course… the last Windows OS I ever really used.

@@docxen I kick myself for selling all my retro gaming stuff about 10 years ago. I had SO much brand new in box items that just weren’t hot yet for collecting like they are now. NIB N64 and Dreamcast controllers, VMU’s. I had two copies of Samba de Amigo US version NIB. And a bunch of obscure PS1 and PS2 games. Zelda OoT gold cart opened but in pristine condition in box with everything. I was ocd with all my gaming stuff so I kept receipts, all inserts, plastic, twist ties, and used an exacto knife to open the shrink wrap on my games and then put them back when not playing them. Oh also had two OG NES used but complete in box with receipt. Power pad, and a bunch of games with boxes, etc. Today my collection would be easily worth 10X what I sold it for… my wife HATEs every time I look up prices on things I owned and sold too soon. It hurts but what can you do but laugh and cry a little inside haha.

You mean you worked for the e-commerce department at a Goodwill organization. They all have different rules and policies (all 155 different organizations in North America). I used to be a store employee, and I refused to send anything dirty to online sales (or out on the sales floor). I cleaned and packed everything going to online sales, even cleaned the shipping containers the items went in. People started to complain about the time I took, until the sales reports came back. I did make someone mad when I started taking items off the shelves in the store for cleaning.

I can't imagine shopping Goodwill online. For me the real adventure is searching through the store. I used to work in a Goodwill store that used to be a K-Mart. Yeah, it was a big one. In my experience they really didn't have any idea how to price anything. My wife cleaned up on hard-to-find kitchen utensils for rock-bottom prices. I figure tech would also fall under that category. Maybe something bright and shiny might be overpriced for what it really is, but that's off set by rather grungy items that are clearly priced to move. Shopping online, I would prefer e-Bay. At least you can (almost) check it out beforehand and there's usually a reasonable return policy in case the item is DOA.

If you have a working original 360, you were blessed, with a failure rate of more than 50%, not from MS, they lie about it, from Game Informer, if you have a working console you were blessed. I personally repaired mine until it just wasn't worth it to keep repairing it. The problem is that the 360 was the first product from MS that was ROHS compliant, which means the solder is lead free... and lead free solder melts at a much higher temperature than lead based solder, and has to be held at heat longer to form a solid connection. Something that it appears MS learned after the 360.
