One thing I am proud of as a resident of Colorado... we have passed a law which mandates that Deere (as well as other manufacturers) must have the repair and parts manuals made to be available to a farmer, for his own equipment. No more of this.... any repair at all, you must call the dealer and have his mechanic come out and do any repair or adjustment, and the farmer was unable to diagnose if it was a small time or a big time repair. Even if it was going to be a heavy duty job, at least he could diagnose the problem and get the part ordered, get the ball rolling as it were. I haven't heard if any other farm belt states have passed similar legislation.

A good solution is for John Deere to offer stripped down legacy versions without all the bells and whistles. A farmer would then take this carcass and aftermarket solutions that are better and maintenance friendly. If they don't offer such product, it invites competitors, some from abroad, thus ruining the company like Detroit was ruined. The present CEO won't go for this, because he won't last to see it implemented. He'll take his money and run, leaving the next CEO holding the bag.
