Not the first time ATC has asked you to repeat yourself. At 10-miles from the field, the KLZU tower controller said your transmission had a lot of static, barely readable. Before you make your next flight, in the run-up area with your engine running, call Ground Control with your usual headset and explain to them that you need to check your radios and will be making several calls to them. Call again using your other headset and ask for a comparison. Not sure of you have a hand mic as back up, but if you do, same check with that as well. Also, go through the same drill with Comm 2. Could be a Comm 1 antennae issue. Or, it may be that your usual headset is on the fritz, and you want to find out for warranty purposes (no-cost repair). AND, check to see if the push-to-talk (PTT) switch on the right seat control stick is operating normally as well. If you try those things, and ATC is still squawking, you may want to check with a radio shop to see of you're putting out the proper transmitting strength.

Many thanks EJ Wash for the advise, I also thought something was not right, " learning by erra", secondly searching for the airport, most airports are on GPS co-ordinates, a decent GPS will give reasonable navigation guide, I do not know if the pilot landed without ACT, but the silence sounds suspicions, more so after Departure was cleared by ACT, play around with the comms just to check functionality & keep ACT on track before critical moment, anywhere good learning curve, I am reading my PPL

The problem with being an engineer is that I know how low the probability of a mid air collision is. Still, even I'd change the altitude as well because even though it's nearly impossible to collide even if at the same altitude, it's even more impossible if you're at a different altitude.

Mike, when coming in with that crosswind you need to be doing a side slip. That will keep you on centerline while on final. Dip your wing low into the wind and use rudder to keep your nose on centerline. Look it up. You can crab for a while coming into land, but transition into a side slip while on final to maintain center line instead of just kicking in rudder at the last moment, much preferred method
@nghicks423 жыл бұрын
Seems like you’re describing a side slip (to counter crosswind) vice a forward slip (to lose energy).

15:37 Mike, might be helpful to "project your voice" a bit more when making radio transmissions. Made the mistake of descending to pattern altitude at night when I had no idea where GREER airport was. Controller recognized my confusion and gave me a vector to put me on downwind, "Cessna JWP, fly heading ABC for traffic avoidance." He gave me what I needed without me asking, and I believe he was being creative with the part about traffic.

I fly a tail wheel airplane and try real hard to stay off the center. Lots of runways have center lights that feel like a 2x4 when you hit them! I actually like to land on the side that the wind is blowing toward because the wind is going to try to turn you into the wind after touchdown.
@FlyGuyToo3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, I also fly out of KLZU and anytime I fly the VFR corridor over Atlanta from KLZU to KFTY, I always monitor KPDK Tower for situational awareness of traffic arriving or departing their parallel runways, just to the northeast of downtown.
@doranjaffas73513 жыл бұрын
Traffic can be hard to spot especially at the same altitude. Very small targets and a very big horizon. My airplane painted a cream and a dark brown accent makes it very difficult to spot so I keep the strobe on in the vicinity of other airports. Even then I keep a sharp scan out with detailed radio calls as to where I'm at, the altitude and the air speed and the direction of flight.
@BumbleBee55R3 жыл бұрын
Wow, a lot of haters on here and I don't mean to be one too. But as for the wake turbulence, you want to take off AFTER his touchdown point, not before. Wake turbulence is only when lift is being generated. So, a short field take off in this situation would not be correct. You would want to extend your take off roll to after the other plane's touch down point.
@frankcharles96013 жыл бұрын
Practice Practice Practice!😎
@ericthomas81473 жыл бұрын
Am I correct that proper wake turbulence avoidance procedure would be to take off after the start of the jet's landing roll, not before it's touchdown point? I.e. short field takeoff there isn't ideal?
@JoeRendaRealty3 жыл бұрын
I think you are correct. The vortices sink and spread out , but one can move over to the runway in a crosswind. They stop as soon as the wheels touchdown and the wings stop producing lift. This is mostly a problem on heavy aircraft. The best thing to do is wait at least 3 or more minutes
@flying_david3 жыл бұрын
Yes sir, you're correct. That also confused me and made me read into that topic again to refresh my memory. Takeoff after a larger aircraft means taking off AFTER the touchdown point of that a/c.
@jimmorris50903 жыл бұрын
Yep, I notice that too. A short field takeoff would be correct following departing heavy aircraft. After departing, it is best to not fly under the heavy aircraft's flight path. When departing Reno in the mid-1980s, I saw the tragic result of wake turbulence a half-mile off the departure end of RW-16. A Cessna TR182 had crashed with the total loss of control. I would guess he had to be at an altitude of 300-500 feet when he encountered the wake turbulence. There were no survivors.

You set your climb up to 3000, then plugged LZU as direct to “flight plan”. Why not climb 600 additional feet go over the top of PDK or request the transition to fly direct? Either way you were well below the Bravo shelf at those altitudes. The right turn to the south side of the city, just over the Benz, was way out of the way before heading to Stone Mtn to get to LZU. Even though she was telling you where the traffic conflict was starting 3 miles at 10 o’clock, you got lucky to avoid disaster at 1/4 mile and converging without deviating sooner.

Initially, the traffic was at 10:00. Then it moved to 11:00. Turning left means you're turning inside and away from the traffic, Turning right would have put you on a converging course with the traffic. The easier solution would have been to either climb, or descend, since the traffic was maintaining its altitude.
