Some of the best bootlegs are from a guy named Mike Millard known as "Mike the mic". He lived in L.A. and would pose as disabled in a wheelchair. He had a Sony stereo cassette recorder hidden in the cushion with mics in the arm rests. His recording of Zeppelin in June of '77 is legendary.

The Zeppelin shows at the Fillmore West in '69 were unbelievable. This recording's been around at least 50 years in bootleg form. Never understood why it wasn't cleaned up and professionally released.

This is one of the first bootlegs I ever bought - amazing soundboard recording. Rumor has it the tapes were stolen from Jimmy's home and all the high quality bootlegs followed. Thanks!

This show happened on my 15th birthday. I had just heard LZ1 for the first time at my friends house ( the album belonged to the artist lederhosen brother of his gf ). I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. It wasn’t until nearly 40 years later I got a copy of “ Dancing Avocado” ! The quality of the recording is astonishingly good for its time and Jimmy sounds superb, with phenomenal “ bite/crunch” to the guitar sound. Thanks for revisiting this classic moment guys. Best wishes from England. See you both again soon.

Never heard these recordings. Thank you for sharing. All four of them sounded amazing. Sometimes the 'mix' was a little odd and volume increase/decrease. But that is 100% to be expected from a 1969 recording of a band that only had one album released. Which adds to the divine 'rawness' of it. Loved the reverb Jimmy was using for 'You shook me'! What stood out the most to me was Bonham. The consistent, reliable tempos, the imaginative fills...wow.

First time hearing it. Thanks. Sometimes the raw live unfiltered pre 1970, Alfalfa's (pre Whole Foods) version of this band's music still hits the spot in 2023.

They used to call themselves the "band of nods." Not only did they have an almost chemical connection to each other, they used to give each other visual clues when unanticipated transitions were coming in the song - nods, eye contact, winks, spins, etc. They never really knew exactly where they would go on any particular song, on any given night. While they didn't always land on their feet, they often created spontaneous, magnificent explorations. You guys should dive into their album: *BBC Sessions* ....their live stuff from that era is magnificent.

This is why people rushed to buy tickets the next time the band came to town.

I'm guessing they dropped some of these songs as time went on for many reasons, most you mentioned, but I'm sure the toll they took on Robert's voice had to be a factor (Ie: Immigrant Song later on)

Yup. First got that bootleg I would say in 73 or 74. Another example of Zep in their embryonic stage. Quite different than just a couple years later. And believe it or not Plants was a bit hoarse for that show. That’s the best recording from those California shows but a couple of nights before his vocals were absurd! Screaming his freaking head off. Lol.
