@@unnamedman666 Nearly everyone I know either scrolls on TikTok, IFunny, IG Reels, Or YT shorts. It's infuriating sometimes since I don't use any of them besides YT Shorts on occasion when I see a video about dogs, cats, foxes, etc., but that's only when I'm winding down to go to sleep or before I actually get up in the morning. I know I have an addictive personality so I have to try and avoid things that can be addictive. Plus I have seen what the infinite dopamine and scrolling can do to people. They all lose the ability to hold attention to anything for more than a few seconds.

Well, this begs the question what games do you play? Cause not all games are equal "AAAA" boring slop is becoming an issue, but the best counter to it is to just not buy, which is exactly what people are doing Personally i found myself enjoying mostly the games that have been clearly made with care and love from the creators. Regardless of the genrea, those usually play best. I m gonna give a few examples of games i'd consider gems i've played over the last few years Witcher 3 (2 and 1 are good too, just dated) Kingdom come: deliverance Hollow knight Rain world Cry of fear (free on steam!) Nebulous fleet command (beware learning cliff) Helldivers 2 (better with friends!) You will notice that none of those are modern AAA titles, and only one has microtransactions (HD2) If you are not having fun with your game, find something else to play and don't force yourself. Nothing good will come of it man

I went through a period where I just did not play video games. Could not enjoy them like I used to. It was from 25 to 27. Before then there were long periods where I would not touch a game. They were boring and lacking in life. So I did other stuff and it passed. Now I am 36 and I LOVE gaming again. What I have found that keeps it fresh is trying games I otherwise might not have tried. Not many make me feel like I did when I was a kid in 1997 firing up my playstation on a Saturday morning at like 8am and knowing I have all day to lose myself in FF7. And pretty much until I graduated High school in 2006 I would play through one of the three PS era Final Fantasies. There was definitely a difference when you did not have the internet at all or even if it was around you would have to print stuff out to remember it lol. Games were far more mysterious. They were slower paced and because they had you hooked you didn't care about the pacing being slow. What might happen next? You had no clue and would try all kinds of things. The only game that has made me feel like a kid again is Sea of Stars. There is separate feeling in games I chase and that is that heart racing Triumph of games like Sekiro and Bloodborne. They also had that old school quality that what you saw is what you got. No guides or cheats could carry you. You just had to learn the game by playing it. Sure there are builds and shortcuts and item locations to find online. But it brought back that sense of mystery and challenge. You want to see the next cool thing? Well you better figure this out because a guide won't make you better at not getting your head caved in lol. I think discovering exactly what I want out of gaming got me back into it. Growing up took me out of it for awhile. Just like when I first learned music theory it really took the fun and mystery out of some of my favorite bands. But then it circles back. You change and you find new things to appreciate about games and music. You can enjoy it for what it is and not lament what it is not or what could have been. Im playing that Trash Pile Forspoken right now. The writing is SO BAD. I skip cut scenes. I make fun of it with my wife. But I am having fun. Don't fret guys! The fun will return. Might take a year or two or five but it can definitely come back.

I don't fully agree. Before, a game had to be good to sell copies. Now, any game can sell copies, so your game doesn't need to be as good. If you're an established AAA studio, you're guaranteed to get sales.

I had a similar experience during COVID, I played a lot - I think I averaged like 45hrs/wk or something like that on steam. I beat the Halo MCC in like a week and a half, played all the Dead Space games in a week, Mass Effect, Death Stranding, etc. Then after COVID that just stopped and I outright took a hiatus from video games. What changed it for me was getting a steam deck. I don't know or understand why but being able to basically play wherever changed things for me, that and trying different games like Fire Emblem 3H or Front Mission 4 (heavily rec both btw). I never fell into the F2P rabbit hole though, it feels like a scam and I'd rather play games I paid for.

You are literally better off not playing most games made after 2007 unless it's something you're sure is worth your time. There is such a vast library of great games to choose from that if you're feeling burnt out on one series or genre you can always try another. I always tell people to invest in a laptop or something that can emulate everything up to PS2/GCN/Xbox for this reason. Not to mention the amount of PC titles from like 1993-the mid 00's that are still absolutely worth checking out today. Blood, Shadow Warrior, the Might and Magic games, Deus Ex, Thief, the first 4 Civ games. Once you put in the minimum effort of setting this shit up you won't so much as give the modern space a second glance, and that's really all you can do. Don't post about the slop coming out, don't give them publicity, don't give them money, it's the only thing the average consumer can really do.

One thing I can say that is a saving grace from the burnout is the indie game scene, or playing older games. It fuels my nostalgia and makes me feel content most times these days but the past two months, I've been unemployed because of circumstances I won't share here, but I've had a lot more free time to play, and I've been feeling this way for the last few weeks. Trying to find new things to play or try to go and finish games I haven't yet helps but after that, what else is there to do? I suppose we just need a new hobby 😅😅

I've been playing games since the 80's and I've seen basically every trend. Once of the more disturbing trends that is rising in popularity is gatcha games (which are glorified casinos). These games are designed to capture a player by implementing the same dopamine highs and lows of a casino to get people to continue to play (in the hopes you start feeding the thing money). This isn't only present in gatcha games but in all F2P games as well, I would probably suggest to steer away from games that have an F2P model especially those games with gatcha pull mechanics. Multiplayer games are also really popular nowadays and the issue with those games are that your enjoyment is reliant on your team mates and as such can lead to really toxic encounters with other players if you are not playing how they feel you should be playing. If this is something that is bothering you I'd also suggest you steer clear of these games as well. For me I stick with single player pay to own games 99% of the time. The benefit of being a young gamer is you have access to so much content from the past. There are so many retro games to play (for the PSONE you have around 8000 games to choose from in total). I don't think you can "fix" the industry i think you need to just find a genre of games that you can enjoy again. Not even looking at retro there are a ton of indie games out there that hark back to retro game philosophies while bringing modern game luxuries into the formulas (think games like pizza tower and anton blast). Depending on your taste if you want to go super old school id suggest megaman 2-6 (1 is really hard) obviosuly mario is good. Monster world 4 is great, Ranger X, Sonic 3, yoshi's island, jumping flash, MGS series, ratchet and clank (I really like a crank in time and a rift apart) crash bandicoot, castlevania (4 and bloodlines are my recommendations), medievil, tony hawk pro skater 1-3, quake is great, unreal 2, ninja gaiden (xbox), wario land series, zelda majora's mask and ocarina, the list could go on for ages. Each era has a trend and each trend eventually dies. Personally i really hate games with the open world, side quests, crafting, and talent trees that you completely fill out by the end of the game type of games but i still play some modern games because not all of them have that system. Long story short you just need to look for games that dont include the things you dont like in modern gaming

Indie games are pretty much the only "genre" thats still pretty fun in general. I think my gaming budget has been something like 9-1 in Indie:Corporate lately. It's pretty cheap in general, too - I'll probably get to keep my 2019 GPU until it stops turning on.

Your sentiment is fairly common. Different people feel such apathy for a variety of reasons, and you're astute to point out distractions and social dynamics as contributing factors. Everyone has their own preferences and motivations, so I don't think there are any any universal solutions. I tend to prefer single-player games, and have been gradually playing through my backlog of older games. Setting aside my expectations and disregarding the opinions of others can help me engage with games on their own terms. I don't care what's the "latest and greatest", and I don't care what's trending; I care what the game I decide to play delivers. Recapturing a sense of enjoyment from playing multi-player games takes additional adjustment of expectations. It's easy to get a group of friends on the same page about how casual or how sweaty a session should be. Playing with strangers requires searching for servers or lobbies appropriate to the experience I want. Additionally, I play only when I actually feel motivated to do so. It's less frequently than when I was younger, but it helps mitigate the diminishing returns from constant dopamine hits. Playing out of a sense of routine or obligation saps the enjoyment from the experience. Doing work or other activities can build a sense of anticipation and genuine desire to play. I hope you can recapture the sense of enjoyment you used to feel playing games. Cheers!

This is pretty true for multiplayer games I feel like, but single player gamers have actually been eating _really_ good lately. Outside of the big names like Wukong or Space Marine 2, you guys ever heard of Cobalt Core? Fuckin' immaculate. I can also personally recommend News Tower, Black Reliquary, Metal Slug Tactics, Galaxy Burger, Backpack Hero, Rule the Waves III... and that's just the last couple of years, to say nothing of my Steam backlog (plus future releases I'm hype for such as Keep Driving, Ale Abbey, and Wander Stars), as well as obscure but absolutely _massive_ projects like X-PirateZ, Pokemon: Realidea System, and FTL: Multiverse... Hell, my friends and I even recently replayed the entire Total War series on stream together and had _way_ more fun than we thought we would, particularly with Warhammer III, Three kingdoms, and Attila (granted CA/SEGA's predatory DLC practices are a _bit_ of an arse). There's a true wild west of great stuff to be had out there, _particularly_ if you're a strategy gamer - you just have to be willing to step a lil' outside your comfort zone to go find it.

You mentioned Apex Legends. In my opinion, this isn't helping. This game is just not that interesting. There are better shooters that are more fun. Have you tried making a list of your favorite games? That can help you figure out what to play next. For example, if you're a big OOT fan, there are a lot of high quality rom hacks to play. If you like Pokémon games but want a challenge, there are nuzlockes, kaizo Ironmon, or just the Pokémon Stadium games (they're very hard, sometimes extremely hard).

Competitive people tend to be toxic and use toxicity as a way of gaining a advantage by either demoralizing or just be a prick in general. Sucks, but things need to be explored and understood more why it's like that and how to find a good solution.

Average take of depressed guy who just plays live-service games honestly. Anyone who cries that games "aren't fun anymore" are just playing the same live-service games or they just want to live in a culture war where they need to scream about things they don't like. Many people do have an addiction to screens, myself included, but the games aren't the problem honestly. There's so many great games that come out every day and you just don't hear about most of them. I can see why a more casual person would only see the same service games like your CoD's, Valorants, Fortnite, etc. But the old games aren't gone, and the indie and doublle A markets are at an all time peak honestly. The money hungry devs is a problem from capitalism where it's the easiest way to make money. Remember a mount in WoW made more than Starcraft 2 ever made. They do it because it works and people can't control their impulses. I play Warframe quite a bit, yea a service game, but I don't go out of my way spending how much on it all the time. I'll buy plat with coupons but I don't feel the need to go buying every pack that comes out. Warframe is a standout because the creative director has directly said "if we wouldn't spend money on it how can we expect you to" but the games having packs/battle passes etc is because it works. Just find a game you enjoy and enjoy it. If you are playing a game to shit on other people, or honestly what I think is worse, on the devs calling them "lazy" "stupid" etc then you need to go outside and find something else. The games aren't gonna leave and you can try other stuff in the meantime. Perception of what you enjoy or not enjoy can change as you grow up. Honestly this just sounds like depressed rambling with very little point. Try new things and see what sticks. I've played games a lot of my life, and I remember thiis period of my life where i was legitmitely addicted to league of legends in high school and I legitimately blame the addictive nature of that game for a lot of my struggles in that time, but once I moved away from it (a service game , IT ALL COMES AROUND BABY) i started finding things I can enjoy.

I don't think he's trying to live in a culture war. I dont play live service games period and I basically had the same experience. What changed it for me was actually giving RPGs a shot again (TRPGs like Fire Emblem for now, I'll try JRPGs eventually) and switching (lol) up the way I play games by getting a steam deck. I think having a plot (Metal Gear, Final Fantasy 13) and really engaging gameplay and progression systems (Gran Turismo, ARMA III) are the big distinguishing thing for me and one of the reasons that live service just doesn't appeal to me

@WaitingKeptYouHuh1984 I don't think most "gamers" try to be in a culture war until they are swept up into it. I wasn't until I was watching all the culture war garbage from like 2016-2021. Those types raise their numbers by taking insecure people (usually men as a lot of younger guys are suuuuper insecure) by pointing out easy complaints most people don't like but then twist it into a narrative into why something unrelated is bad. The people ruining years of these young men's lives need to be stamped out of the public eye I'm some way. Most AAA games have worrying trends like battle passes and micro transactions and that's a problem but the culture warriors then include more and more things like "oh look these games all have women doesn't that make you think" and much worse.

Games used to be made by people without degrees in a basement and used programming knowledge to tell a story, an adventure, or create fun problems to solve. They didn't hate their customers on Twitter. They borrowed from other games or books, movies, things they grew up with. Now it's a streamlined business with no life in it. They hire psychologists to manipulate their customers out of their money instead of creating something with a soul. This upsets them as it can't be quantified and made into an exploitable equation. It's something that people who have experienced pain, heartbreak, joy, and love can really relate to. It's got to be earnest, genuine, the secret ingredient being love. Ugly, unapologetic, straight from creative rule-of-cool for its own sake kind of creativity. Modern manga like Chainsaw Man have that in SPADES. Every character has a shitty life and are goofy and weird and funny despite how serious the story is. Denji rides a shark, arcs before his mouth got barfed in by a coworker. He goes through heartbreak. No deep reasons either. "I did that because it's sad, it's cool, I relate to it, I thought it would be cool to happen." It's not trying to talk down to you or tell you how to live, or tricking you into giving it money.
