You realize Neil paraphrased that from the Greek philosopher Heraclitus? He took lines from John Donne, Ernest Hemingway and others to use in Rush’s lyrics. I agree he was a great lyricist but Neil loved to read and I don’t think a lot of people know he lifted lines from others to use in their songs.

I love Rush. Probably my favorite band. For into them in the early to mid 80s. I do love how they have been able to create such huge soundscaoes as a 3 piece. But, we often seem to overlook that fact that many rock and metal bands have been and are a 3 piece. What I mean is that many rock bands only have three people playing instruments and often the singer is purely the vocalist. The difference with Rush is that Geddy plays bass and often keys. I think the fact that they are a 3 piece is overstated. It would still be impressive if Geddy only sang and they had a bassist. It would still be three musicians (playing instruments) and a singer. I just think the fact that they are three people, is over hyped. That said, they are one of the true greats. Love this band.

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! With heart felt admiration and sincerity! Gary

One of the most amazing things about Rush is the way they move between time signatures; you may not even have noticed for example the bridge section into the guitar solo changed to 7/8, so effortlessly and without the listener being jolted or having to re-sync their foot tapping on the down beat... ;-)

If we are talking about the music then nothing beats La Villa Strangiato or some of their more epic early stuff like 2112. That "sound" you heard the drummer make was on an open high hat (closed quickly) with a simultaneous kick bass drum (which coincides with the open high hat note). For those who've not tried Neil Peart's high hat/bass drum technique, it looks like it should be simple, but it's devilishly hard for all but the best drummers (I'm not great, so it's a struggle), and it was one of his numerous innovations in the way he composed and performed accents for the music.

@sethcashman101110 ай бұрын
I don't remember what I said in my comment on your "Limelight" reaction from maybe a year ago (!), but I do think I remember using the word "effortless." There is an apparent ease in his transitions and this gorgeous sonority in his midrange. Another thing, which I never see or hear mentioned by anyone, is the effortlessness (that word again) in his vibrato during this period - and the fact that he always seemed to be able to use it in just the right places (""His reserve a quiet defense," "The river," "What you say about society," etc.) There is a prime example of that instinct and ability on "Vital Signs." When he sings the phrase, "Can only be worn by persistence," he kind of accents the word "persistence" with this beautiful trilly vibrato, which adds so much - to the extent that, when I heard the song live and he sang the phrase without that vibrato, I was disappointed, because I felt that it was so integral to that vocal performance. Also, he is the frigging Prime Minister of diphthongs, but that's another topic altogether. These are things most people probably don't think about, even Rush fans. But I do, because, though I'm not a "singa" (as Owl Jolson might say), I do so love vocals and vocalists. Glad to have heard an analysis of this track from you. I felt this was Geddy's voice at its best. It still had range and flexibility, but by this point, it also had a richness and maturity which came with age and experience. A legitimately great vocalist who was somehow never recognized as such by the masses. Oh - and that "tiny shift" into verse two was a hihat "bark" - Neil Peart doing his best Bernard Purdie. Anyway, thanks again!

Sounds effortless, but is anything but. Probably the least appreciated thing about them. Many of their peers in the biz have commented over the years that they're probably the hardest working band in rock music. I absolutely love your love of this song, and Rush. Maybe the best technical band, and the composition of their songs is unparalleled.

I grew up listening to Rush but didn’t really get into the album Power Windows and newer. Last year I started listening to the entire collection of Rush songs while driving. Surprisingly I can’t stop playing Rush when I drive. I tried putting on other music, but I’m finding most other music boring now. I keep going back to Rush and never get tired of it. The music is so complex and multi-layered, you can focus on different parts each time you listen. There is so much there and I just don’t get tired of it. Neil’s drumming is so incredible. I love the constant timing changes through out the songs.

Same as you, I quite drew a line at Power Windows but recently for the recommendation of a younger fan I listened to the album again and I was really surprised. There's a lot to love there too!

It took me a little while to finally get PW too. It was Hold Your Fire for me. Their worst album imo, but I like all the other albums

Geddy's bass play on Tom Sawyer is badass , these guy's are tight . I found them in the 70's & rite off the VOLUME went MAX .

I'd like to suggest your next Rush song, when you do get aroud to more, "Losing It", from my second favorite Rush album, "Signals". This is a song with an incredible electric violin solo, never played live until Rush was on their final tour, absolutely brilliant song!

I saw FM open for them in 1980 or 1981; what a great opening band…no one should have to follow Rush on stage 😏

I was just thinking the same thing. There aren't many songs from Rush that I do not like...but that is absolutely one of my favorites and definitely a got to.

"absolutely brilliant song" what is brilliant? Be specific.
@jackfetter10 ай бұрын
@@michaelzilkowsky2936 Really? Well, to start, the lyrics, they touch on no longer being able to do the things from youth, or no longer having the drive/inspiration. Then there's the electric violin solo, building from a melodic start to a blistering frenzy while Neil up's the complexity of the drum part. Finally, Alex taking up the violin melody on guitar, extending it until it finally drops off with the foreshadowing line, we all will face, "the bell tolls for thee" outro...

You need to take off those ear buds and experience Rush or any rock band with 5.1 or a decent stereo system. The bass booming in your head and Neil’s. Kick drum 🥁 thumping in your chest is something to experience next😊❤ keep the great reactions.

So funny that you are finally listening to the true gateway drug for most Rush addicts! I was a fan before this song/album, but the majority of Rush fans I know came on board with Moving Pictures and, specifically, this song. Welcome to our club, you are a most welcomed addition. I am going to suggest two songs for you. Not so much for analysis, but just because the voices are so good and the songs so emotive. Foreigner's Two Different Worlds has Lou truly emoting and showing some good range. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoeWZox-hpZmea8&start_radio=1&ab_channel=Foreigner-Topic As to Holly McNarland, since you did the Cranberries the other day, there is something about her voice.somewhat reminds me of Dolores and Alanis mixed together. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZnYm2uZip1mZ8k&ab_channel=HollyMcNarland-Topic Thank you again for your wonderful content.

Welcome to the deep well of greatness that is the magic of Rush! There are so many layers in the tapestry of their music to analyze and enjoy through the course of their career as they grew musically. You've got a large vault waiting for you to discover, and I'm excited for you on your journey! The look of joy and amazement on your face at 9:42 reminded me of when I first discovered them in 1980. They are the soundtrack of my life. Keep up the great work, love your channel!

On a Friday night after work (payday) in February 1981 I went to the Record Bar in a local mall to find something new on an album to take home and record to cassette so I could listen in my car. Being 18 at the time I had heard of Rush of course but only recently via a friend and the 2112 album. I liked it just fine but I did not know there was a new Rush album out and was not really shopping for that genre of music. The store was empty when I walked in and the one and only employee working and running the turn table put on the album Moving Pictures and that was it. I got my wallet out so fast. He probably did that for weeks and sold a bunch of copies.

So glad you've become smitten by the Rush bug! Welcome to the family! The song Tom Sawyer is their most universally popular. Brilliant lyrics, precise and powerful musicianship, an incredible mix and wonderfully structured. Yes, Geddy, as well as the rest of the band, made the practically impossible seem effortless. Geddy somehow managed to pull off the vocal intonations, range, and phrasing while playing the most compelling and complex bass lines and movements. Oh, and he did it while simultaneously playing keyboard parts. Greatness. All of it. Enjoy!
