A PERSONAL TRAINER suffers with an extreme form of narcolepsy - a condition that causes her to uncontrollably fall asleep up to 15 times a day. For most people, sleep is a luxury, but for Belle Hutt, it’s something she spends most of her time trying to avoid. Whether she’s sat in a restaurant with a group of friends, or she’s on the sofa at home watching a film, the 23-year-old has to battle excessive sleepiness, hallucinations and cataplexy on a daily basis. Belle, from Surrey, was diagnosed with the condition when she was 17. It was impossible for her to study and she had to drop out of college. Narcolepsy has since left her unable to work a full-time job, but fortunately, Belle has found two big saviours in her life - personal training and her boyfriend, Maikel Breukelman.

Hi, just to clarify. I myself have narcolepsy. The reason why she’s probably able to do that is because of the medication she’s taking (6:19). Ever since I was diagnosed with narcolepsy, the medications has enabled me to live a somewhat normal life :) of course, depending on the med, the one I take lasts for a few hours at a time before I start being sleepy and losing muscle control that I’d have to pop another pill.

Same as with all these people who unfortunately have some sort of condition but yet they become popular online and seem to gather people's attention not only because of their condition but also because they are good-looking and lead a great living style. I have though many times if they weren't as attractive as they are people wouldn't be all over them, complimenting them. After all, it is a fact that attractive people can get away with things unattractive people can't.

I have just sooo many similar symptoms, the exhaustion, sleep paralysis, etc. I sleep, but gain nothing from it. My diagnosis? Unknown sleep disorder. Whelp, at least I can say I tried... Also, just to shut up your critics (and quiet your own curiosity), I would still say to try a rigid sleep-wake-cycle with no naps for a few weeks. I think I lasted three and a half weeks before giving up. Trying to walk, talk, or care for your children while your body actively shuts down just didn‘t work, it turns out. I still have the ‚children‘ problem, but they are older now, and they know that sometimes mommy will just grab a blanket and slump to the side for an hour or so.

@ArDeeMee

@@josephbrinley5201 yes, that‘s where the diagnosis comes from. My patterns don‘t quite fit narcolepsy, and I lack the genetic markers associated with it. So I get all the inconveniences without having a name to point out to others. At least I don‘t (yet) have sleep apnea, so that‘s something positive. ;)

@Winter Soldier Yeah, but like I said, it probably not great as it seems. You have to keep in mind that she is all alone in a country that isn't her own. She has an illness that few understand, much less wanna deal with. So she's more or less stuck with this guy. Now let's look at the guy. He's good looking, has a house in Amsterdam which isn't cheap, so he probably has a good job too. This guy could go with any other girl that is a lot less of a hassle. And that look in his eyes when he talks tells me that he is just using her because she's easy and desperate. She's asleep most of the day and probably receives some generous benefits, maybe rich parents too? I could be entirely wrong of course. But when I see this guy who has all the options in the world in terms of picking a female partner, and he goes with a "problem case", the chances of him being a knight in shining armor are a lot smaller than him just using her for something.

I cannot think about anything besides sleeping. I wake up and it is so hard to stay awake. I fall asleep on buses, in meetings, reading a book. I’m on very strong meds now for which i am very grateful. I hope she finds the right Sleep Specialist and right meds. I have a lot of dreams. they are very vivid and terrifying. The bigger problem is that when I wake up, I recall the dreams perfectly, sometimes even years later. I work for a Sleep Medicine clinic and I can totally sympathize with her. A lot of our patients have to take Ritalin or Adderall just to function. Even when they fall asleep constantly, they’re not getting actual rest, so it’s almost like reaching your deepest sleep and then being jerked awake. Imagine that feeling all day long. Lack of good sleep can totally mess with your head, that’s where the hallucinations come from. It’s really good that she has people in her life to get through this. Then she had a great attitude about it. It’s really great to see her thriving even with such a tough condition.

Finally! I’m 14 and have a narcolepsy. I don’t have hallucinations, but I have other side affects. One of is cateplxy. You trip over air because your muscles stiffen and you fall over. I hope I can find a guy who is so kind and loving towards her. I get made fun of at school because I have Narcolepsy. I fall asleep eating, doing homework, FaceTiming family, during movies, car rides and more. Some teachers aren’t understanding. I may never drive🥺 It can be scary. I take a medication for it, but it doesn’t do much for keeping me awake. It only keeps me from breaking bones. Sometimes I lie awake at night staring at me ceiling. I can’t fall asleep most nights. My brain is too active. Only a couple of my friends are very understanding. At school, the rule is, you can not touch me, try to wake me up, shake my desk/table, throw things at me, touch my supplies for class and more. It’s hard sometimes. But it’s nice to I’m not alone. I got lucky and was able to be diagnosed with Narcolepsy at a very young age. I was diagnosed at 12 years old. Normally it’s 18 years old is when a good amount of people are diagnosed. I’ve had kids say I’m always tired and falling asleep, I must have Narcolepsy. It gets annoying. I’ve also had about 5-7doctors tell me to my face at the ages of 9,10,11, and 12 that I’m completely normal that’s there nothing wrong with me and that they can’t help me. It’s like they thought I was stupid. That hurt my feelings. After a lot of doctors and sleep studies, a doctor actual took the time to carefully and throughly look at my sleep study results. I’m thankful for that. It’s going to be a long journey for me.❤️

I wasn’t diagnosed as having narcolepsy without cataplexy until age 38, but the symptoms started in my early teens. There are several different medications that I have taken over the years to keep me awake, and I have to take different ones to sleep, because the narcolepsy interrupts my sleep cycles giving me insomnia. It’s hard to imagine what this young woman goes through daily, as her case is so extreme. Having such a good support system is great, her mom and boyfriend, but her making the decision not to let narcolepsy define her is wonderful.

My boyfriend has narcolepsy but is on medication to keep him awake during the day. He has sleep paralysis and cant move when he first wakes up. He also says weird things especially when hes extra tired at night like stated in the video but I love him and will be there for him no matter what❤.

my friend have narcolepsy and we are in good terms i diagnosed it first that he have it thanks for belle and for you guys. really, he always said to me gym helps me not to fall asleep so personal trainer it is he is 17 now we are finishing our senior year heading to uni this year. 13 hours sleep is barely enough for him. he got used to it and now his 6 month brother and the daily exercises it keeping him most of the time with full awareness of whats is happening. the classes never gets old the same story he would just pass out completely in an instant a 15 min nap or it would take him an hour nap to get his energy back up.

I am so grateful I stumbled on this vlog. I may have this, in fact I have a doctors appointment tomorrow. Sorta late to develope this maybe, I will be 60 next month, but the title drew me in, because I cannot stay awake either! No matter how much I fight it, my need to sleep is overwhelming!! I hope I find answers. Thank you so very much. 💗
