before this movie, the only way love marriages were shown in bollywood (generally) was that the lovers elope and marry. but this movie changed that. it showed that true love can win over society and love marriages can happen with family consent. also before this a popular bollywood actor trope was "angry young men" which was like over protective, serious and hyper active men. so having a character like raj who is funny, non serious and very loving was quite amazing at that time. for eg. in the fasting scene, its a tradition that wives fast for their husbands long lives. but here he also fasted for simran. that might seem unimportant but it changed the way people saw masculinity

About the kiss that Waleska was hoping for... SRK never kisses on screen except once or twice... he wants to build the romance and tension without a clear physical kiss (also in india it is not that common to kiss in front of people esp before the 2000s and in front of ones parents)... that is why you might notice in the future (when you watch more movies) that srk generally kisses the neck and not the lips
@abdev394111 ай бұрын
I was gonna write that. Before 2000's it's very rare to see any kiss scene and in the West it might portray love but the culture and tradition here doesn't allow that. It was not good & quite vulgar to do that infront of others esp in public places 😅 Ig it's a cultural difference and it's decreasing day by day as we are becoming more global

What a nostalgia trip down memory lane for all those who watched it in theatres, especially in their teens and twenties! It's a great music album, too; nobody does romance like SRK-Kajol! It is the epitome of romance in Bollywood! No one can turn back time, but when I watch something like DDLJ, it's like going back in time with so many hopes and possibilities for the future. Argghh, how I miss those days!

voting for either: 1) *Dil Toh Pagal Hai (1997)* (SRK - Madhuri Dixit- Karishma Kapoor - lighthearted enough for you to enjoy it! a 90s classic for a *reason* from producer Yash Raj Chopra! centers around a group of friends that put on stage musical productions. you'll love the music and choreography, seriously! the songs move the story forward and personally picking a favourite is very difficult! Madhuri has always felt like the epitome of desi beauty to me in this, her grace is unmatched. all 3 main characters are somewhat dreamers in this story.) 2) *Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)* (SRK - Kajol - Rani Mukherjee - storyline takes place over in two different life stages and again has lighthearted moments! a Karan Johar classic! a colourful movie that holds so much nostalgia for me and one that will continue to be watched by me in years to come.) 3) *Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1998)* (Aishwariya Rai - Salman Khan - Ajay Devgn - a drama! a Sanjay Leela Bansali classic ... meaning the costuming, set design and cinematography are really well done! the film score and tracks are beautifully done. since you already seem interested, it would be worth it for these reasons. yes, Aishwariya Rai is stunning - you can't take your eyes off of her.) 4) *Devdas (2002)* (SRK - Aishwariya Rai - Madhuri Dixit - a tragedy, which you guys may not be quite ready for yet ... you may benefit from watching other works from Madhuri, Aishwariya Rai and SRK prior to this one which is stylistically more theatrical. personally it's my favourite Sanjay Leela Bansali film by far! a remake of the 1935 and 1955 films, an adaptation of the novel by Bengali writer Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay.) 5) *Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003)* (SRK - Preity Zinta - Saif Ali Khan - a drama, mostly! it takes place in NYC and producer Karan Johar really pulled in all the South Asian audiences living abroad with this one, it was a hit! you already love the main track from it, SRK made us all fall deeper in love with his character in this emotional rollercoaster!) 6) *Veer Zaara (2004)* (SRK - Priety Zinta - Rani Mukherjee - a romantic drama spanning years, a Yash Raj Chopra epic that will show you more of India/'Pakistan' as the protagonists travel through it, but likely frustrate you and induce tears too. a Romeo-Juliet type situation. this film used untouched musical compositions from the late Madhan Mohan with the help of his son.) 7) *Hum Tum (2004)* (Rani Mukherjee - Saif Ali Khan - a hate to love romance with lighthearted moments and depth! not enough people recommending this one, but it's another Yash Raj Chopra romance that's worth a watch! many chance encounters over the years and in various places around the world between the two main leads. you get invested in both their journeys. the title track is so gorgeous and Rani looks absolutely stunning throughout!) ... 8) *Dil Se (1998)* (SRK - Manisha Koirala - Preity Zinta) - a drama/tragedy with a heavy socio-political baseline. you're not ready for this one, especially for the holiday season it may be too heavy. but at some point, it would be worth checking out. a Mani Ratnam classic with the gorgeous cinematography that we have grown to expect from him. AR Rahman delivered *so* much as the musical director on this film. SRK proved his acting in this film, and Manisha was also brilliant. my understanding is this movie showcases the 7 stages of love displayed in arabic literature; *(spoiler?)* hub (attraction), uns (infatuation), ishq (love), akidat (trust/reverence), ibadat (worship), junoon (madness), maut (death) - a personal favourite but not one that you can go into looking for laughs.)

The most amazing thing this movie did was blend old and modern ideologies together bcoz you see before this movie every love story was boy and girl falling in love and society and family being against it and they essentially were the villain of the love story and boy and girl run away together away from the family..this was the first movie where they didnt demonize the family..they didnt say that the parents are evil but they just came from a different time and the best change was with the hero who didnt want to make the girl run away and break the relationship with her family but he tried to do the hard thing and win their approval since he knows she wont ever be happy with knowing she broke her parents hearts

Also, kajol's entry song sung by Lata ji was every girl's dream and go to song of that time. An iconic movie in every aspect. Weird to put it here, but there is actually an Indian serial(love story) whose plot is based on the 90's era of India, depicting the story of two high-schoolers who fell in love... Its called "Yeh Un Dino Ki Baat Hai"(translated to: This is the tale of those times). It makes a lot of references and you can see how Salman and Shahrukh and Aamir were so famous back then, especially Salman Khan and then Shahrukh Khan made his entry into Bollywood and everyone went head over heels for him as well! I loved that serial as well as my Mom and my sister. We would sit together to watch it and my mother would relate to the things there, sometimes telling us her stories related to the traditions and other things depicted in the serial. It becomes a little cringe at points, but I still loved to watch it haha~ It is available on KZbin and we simply put it on every now and then during dinner-time etc and have a good time reminiscing~😌 Not asking you to react to it or anything(it has so many episodes, its impossible to react to the whole series haha), just putting it out here that you can watch it in your free time if you want to know about the life in India in the 90's(I mean if you're interested in it)!

CLASSICS OF BOLLYWOOD do not display affections as frequently as new bollywood cinema. This movie came out at a time where hugs and trust are the most cozy and intimate moments. Also OG bollywood actors are not that open to onscreen PDA. the new bollywood cinema even though open to onscreen intimacy it is still looked down upon as the only chemistry is shown by physicallity of relationship. The western approach even though widely accepted does not match the onscreen chemistry to who show love not through touching lips but connecting eyes. that is one of the reason the SRK and Kajol chemistry prevails still even after years of new actors and so much developments in INDIAN cinema. One such example is DILWALE a relatively new SRK and KAJOL romance with a great music score

It was very interesting watching Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge through your eyes. I think coming from a Latino, you guys could relate to a lot of our traditions which is why you were perhaps able to appreciate it much earlier in your 'Bollywood' journey. The picture in the middle - at the halfway point - that's a tradition of Bollywood/Indian movies that you can't find outside the country - there's a 10 min break at the 'interval'. That helps with the length of the movies. And because they are long, they have the whole gamut of emotions, joy, laughter, hope, fear, anger. Finally, the review below is funny but the end might help you understand the cultural significance quite well. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioC9qotpl9tlfsU
