Day 398 of posting a cool animal fact: Bison were almost hunted to extinction in the late 1800s! This was for many reasons, and none of them were good. For one, they were very easy to hunt due to being slow animals. Their coats also sold for a lot of money, and their bones were used for fertilizer and bone china. But by far the most malicious of the reasons was in an attempt to starve the Native Americans. The Native Americans were understandably not happy about the colonists trying to take their land, so in response to their resistance the American military ordered that people slaughter the bison and many other native species. This was all to get them to submit to the American government. As a result of all these factors (and more I didn't mention) there were only around 100 bison left by 1880-1890. There's actually a famous picture of two men standing by a mountain of bison skulls that shows the sheer number of bison slaughtered. But thankfully, conservationists managed to bring back bison from the brink of extinction and in the modern day there's approximately 500,000 bison in the wild!
