Y’all the way Hyunjin tryna come for my bias spot because he had me in a chokehold the whole video!!! 😫😫😫 And idk why but learning that Bangchannie is the shortest member just does something to me I- After relooking at the lyrics I think I hit the nail on the head by the end of the video! They ended it looking in a mirror like this whole obsession was more inward than outward. They are two kindred spirits dealing with this unhealthy obsession of SOMETHING! Most of you have said it’s their obsession of their work and I AGREE! It makes the most sense so MAYBE that’s what it was all about. I still stay by my claim that the song is up for interpretation though, so that it can relate to anyone with an unhealthy obsession of something! It can be a person, a possession, or a career/hobby. I love how they leave it open-ended like that so you can make your own assumptions or even relate to it yourself. God tier lyricism!

When they were making the song, they mentioned that even though it's about compulsion, they want to make it ambiguous so that Stay can think they are obssessed with them. And Chan always says it's more fun if we make our own interpretation than when they tell us the answer, so we are all correct. Also whenever there are any sexy sounding lyrics Chan always denies his involvement, so he claims it was all Hyunjin and Hyunjin says it was Bangchan. We all know it was both of them.🤭 Also Channie is the 3rd shortest after Binnie and Han.🥰

I interpreted it as Hyunjin taking control over his cravings. At the beginning Chan has the chain around Hyunjin and when they do their choreographed dance in the hallways they are side by side identical to reach other. Also when Hyunjin is choking Chan it’s not with much force or grip, while Chan is much more forceful. Then they meet at the table and after than Hyunjin is only tied with ropes which shows less restraint that chains, indicating he’s gaining more control. After that their synchronized dance shows that Hyunjin is closer to the camera than Chan like he’s getting away from him, and then at the end Hyunjin has his hand around Chan’s neck so now he’s in control. I thought this was a beautifully made song and video.

Bangchan is actually one of the shortest members, most of skz is pretty short actually. Chan is 5’7” and so are Felix and Han, lee know is 5’8”, and Changbin is 5’6” so he’s the shortest, hyunjin is at least 5’10” but he said he grew over the past year or so so he might b taller, and I.n. Is about the same height as Hyunjin now, and seungmin is 5’10”

Red Lights introduced me to SKZ and remains one of my favourite songs. SKZ love to put multiple interpretations into songs. "Gangbak" - the korean name of the song, means obsession/compulsion and they wrote it during their Howl in Harmony series so we actually got to see them come up with it. The core of the idea was the relationship with their art, that idea of practicing all night and seeing your exhausted reflection, but still going an hour more because you cannot stop. It's seductive but painful sometimes. But they also said they wanted a double meaning of it could be about a person, and to try a sexy aesthetic. Fun fact- Novvkim directed this video, he has done quite a lot of SKZ B side videos and also appears in the Howl in Harmony series. He's one of the few publicly out gay directors in Korea I'm aware of. Chan and Hyunjin actually came up with a lot of aspects for this video, but there is also a mirroring theme and there is a very amusing moment in the behind the scenes where director Novvkim is like 'Bang Chan will now choke Hyunjin' and Chan is like 'what?', but when the reasoning is explained he's fully on board. Chan and Hyunjin definitely had a lot of fun making this video and getting to show their full on sexy side for the first time. And now we have an OT8 version of Red Lights they perform on tour, with staging largely designed by Hyunjin. They are all chained by the neck. It was certainly an experience being on twitter the day they performed their first concert. Chan also played the raw vocals for OT8 Red Lights on Chan's room (the clip is on youtube kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqqaaaJteM6gaJI ) and they are so good. Oh, and idk if you've realised yet but yes, Chan is shorter than Hyunjin. Hyunjin is the tallest in SKZ, but in general, all of SKZ are tiny. They're one of the shortest groups around, and Changbin is the shortest of them all. You don't notice it when they're all together but stand them next to TXT you would. Personally, as a fellow short person, I absolutely love it.

The title for this track in Korean translates to Compulsion…so it absolutely could be about an obsessive relationship. Chan has said that they are using the sexuality/relationship angle to help convey the intensity of emotion that one feels when dealing with obsession. Chan and Hyunjin both struggle with obsession when it comes to their art….they love it and it’s the thing that sustains them but the constant need to perfect their craft and the never ending drive to constantly create, quite literally keeps them from sleeping at night. They love to create…they need to create…but that need is so strong that it ultimately controls them and often they suffer because of it. Chan especially, is relentless when it comes to working on music. He also struggles terribly with insomnia, and has been open about the fact that he rarely sleeps. Instead he often stays awake all night working in the studio. Red lights is a reference to the red studio light that comes on when recording is in progress…but of course red lights are artistically linked to passion and lust and other sexy thangs too. There are so many layers and dualities when it comes to these guys and their music. Chan himself is the same way…Bang Chan/Channie is the everyday, hardworking, shy, goofy, lovable man we see all the time. This song is so genius because it works on so many levels. It’s about obsession and it successfully compels the audience to obsess over the meaning. 😂 I see the toxic relationship level as the metaphorical through line of the song, but not as the ultimate meaning. There also seems to be an element of Bang Chan playing more the role of the obsessor while Hyunjin is more the object of obsession, who slowly gains contol over the course of the video... But like all obsession, it is inherently selfish, which is why it ends on the mirror shots. It is great to have passions in life, whether relationships, hobbies, or professions, but if you let it devolve into obsession, it will contol you and consume you until you have nothing left. The costuming in this is a hybrid between fencing uniforms and straight jackets, which is a very clever way to portray that knife's edge between total control and total lack of control. Genius.

I know I'm late but my interpretation of Red Lights. It's that dark kinda love. Toxic, obsessive, complusive. You hate it but somehow are drawn back to it. Bang Chan's character seems to be the more obsessed one in the relationship. The one that keeps chaining and re-tying Hyunjin. Hyunjin is the one that is always trying to escape. Love Bang's line...."I know Im out of control but I can't let you go" The vid could have come across as Hyunjin being a prisoner to a toxic lover. But Hyunjin's smirks while being choked and also showing Bang Chan chained up speaks to Hyunjin kinda loving the toxicity. Maybe I'm reaching here but that final image with Hyunjin choking Bang Chan. Hyunjin's ring tattoo perfectly matches Chan's neck tattoo. As if to say Chan was always the one that was collared and Hyunjin holds the leash. 5:20 the height gap between hyunjin and the other 7 members (maybe not seungmin who's 3-4 cm shorter than hyunjin as much) is so funny to me. Changbin and Han are like 5'6; Chan, I.N, Felix, and Minho are like 5'7; Seungmin 5'8; Hyunjin 5'10. MoaStays say that TXT's shortest member (Taehyun who's 5'10) is the same height as SKZ's tallest member and that Changbin is 20cm shorter than TXT's tallest member Soobin. It's a very fun inside joke because SKZ and TXT members are friends especially Yeonjun & Changbin, and I.N & Beomgyu and SKZ look like cute chipmunks next to TXT when they interact.

I love watching your reactions because it really makes me think so much more deeply about the lyrics and meaning behind the song. As you probably already read from the million other stays who most likely mentioned the fact Bang Chan loves to tease stays knowing very well what we are asking. But when both Hyunjin and him did say it was about their obsession with work that really connected more to me. I am very much someone who gets so obsessed with my work and I tend to overwork, sacrificing a lot of my basic needs like sleep or eating. This is something Channie has talked about before during his lives. But even though I overwork myself and am so stressed out and know it is bad for me I still can never just take a break. It's like when I have a break to myself and I'm not stressing I hate that feeling so much and crave that busy schedule. FYI, I am a psych major and so I tend to look at things very introspectively, with this song in particular the lyrics really dance with this idea of night being day and day being night in the sense that with obsession the reality of time and your well being really just get thrown into a whirlwind. The video itself has so much that each time I watch it I seem more and more symbolisim to this idea of obsession and knowing it's bad for you yet still having such a strong craving for it. The way they look at each other throughout the video really plays on this idea of how with anything in life we as humans tend to either externalize a lot or internalize. In those moments it almost seems like they are looking at their obessions and just focusing on it as something externally put on them. They look at each other yet, its more so that they aren't seeing each other but are seeing themselves. In the end when they look in the mirror it almost symbolizes the idea of introspection and how they are not looking not externally for answers or understanding but within. The one thing that I really found interesting in the music video is when they are on the bed being chained and struggling the other stands above. It reminds me of sleep paralysis and the icky, terrifying feeling that comes with it. It feels like you are trapped within yourself and no matter how much you try you are stuck in this place. The person standing over almost gives this idea that though you are begging for a way out yet everything and everyone who are within your reach can't and don't help you. You feel trapped. You yourself aren't even helping yourself and so it's almost this metaphor of watching yourself drown in that pain and obsession. This is just my kinda thoughts on it all lol Love your reactions so much and your passion for music and the complex components that make up music. Red Lights Korean name is Compulsion. You picked up on it beautifully. I won't repeat everything others have said, but Chan is ALWAYS working, and Hyunjin is a dancer (along with all of his other talents) - so obsessive work habits are a thing. Although, I think all artists have to deal with obsessive behavior at some point. Thank you for recognizing the beauty of Hyunjin's vocals, he has this soft tone that doesn't get highlighted as much due to their style, but when it does ... I think it's lovely. Also, welcome to the Hyunjin is a bias wrecker club. At some point, they all end up as a bias or a wrecker. I get wrecked regularly. I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it to you but almost all of Stray Kids' lyrics are gender-neutral to allow all listeners to relate the lyrics to their life and experiences. The director for this MV is openly queer and they have worked with him multiple times before. This MV was specifically designed to have multiple meanings. If you just look at the visuals without paying attention to the lyrics you can come to one conclusion but on the other hand, if you only pay attention to the lyrics then you might come to a completely different conclusion. As you look more into their lyrics you'll learn THEY LOVE leaving the meanings of their songs open to interpretation! This is one of the things I love about them! for me hyunjins vocals are just soothing he has a beautiful voice! thank you for this reaction, please, please check out his song little star or with the tittle "miss you", it was released on KZbin a while ago , but they released it on an album recently , hyunjin sings beautifully there and its also a very emotional song for him. also his lyricism really shows in another song love untold. this song killed a lot of stays (how could it not?! ) there is a behind the scenes video of red lights if you want to check out. okay just came back after watching girl you represent us, when i tell you we died i mean it!🤣🤣 they said red lights is about an obsessive relationship they have with their work, they both are workaholics so it makes sense ,but skz often leaves songs to interpretation so it also can be about any obsessive relationship a human being has in life.
