Rosamund Pike is so good at playing bad. Her work as Amy Dunne in David Fincher’s Gone Girl scored her a nomination for Best Actress and now she’s getting more awards season love for playing the duplicitous Marla Grayson in J Blakeson’s I Care a Lot on Netflix. Marla appears to, well, care a lot while working as a court-appointed guardian for folks in need when really, Marla is busy abusing the system behind the scenes. Marla targets elderly individuals to put in care facilities, whether they need to be there or not, so that she can take control of their assets.
Check out what Pike had to say about the similarities between Marla and Gone Girl's Amy Dunne, the significance behind Marla's vape pen, and more in this interview!
I Care a Lot is available to stream now on Netflix.

I never felt like they asked the audience to root for Marla in any way. People are just so used to root for the main character. I really like that this was about a horrible person, and I'm glad how it ended although one would wish it was on a grander scale.

@@sarahlevine2397 definitely original and thought provoking, but if they were going to kill her off anyways it's disappointing that they did it in such a half assed way. I really liked this movie because exactly what pike said at the beginning. This movie doesn't ask for your sympathy. It doesn't try and make you feel for her. It just presents who she is and says this is her like her if you want. I like that. I love when we are given powerful, smart characters who are rutheless and bad ass with no remorse. I think its so cool and actually realistic to how people are.

She's not breaking the law? By colluding with a doctor to have someone declared unfit? That seems highly illegal.

It is not unfortunately. You have no idea what psychiatrists are up to all over the planet. Many of them, if not most, have a mentall illness and they enjoy the power that comes from making others dependable to them. This is how they get off.
@GrabAnwalt
@GrabAnwalt 3 жыл бұрын
@@xxxstar90dustxxxr It is absolutely illegal though :D Using your position of power to declare mentally fit people as unfit is abuse-of-power and doing it for personal gain is flat out corruption
@xxxstar90dustxxxr
@xxxstar90dustxxxr 3 жыл бұрын
@@GrabAnwalt It is extremely difficult to prove that a mental health professional has ulterior motives when she declares someone mentally unfit. Especially when she also abuses the person in order to confuse them and to traumatise them. It is very easy for a mental health professional who is evil to traumatise a patient. Anyone who is supposedly on their care willingly or not. You may not get that, but it is very easy. They are mental health professionals they know what to say, plus no matter how much you know that what they are saying isn’t correct it is still going to be traumatising and confusing. A lot of psychiatrists/ psychologists do that to their patients . Do you know any laws that protect those people? The professionals supposedly did what they did because they know better. And they will say that the person isn’t well and misunderstood their intentions.
@GrabAnwalt
@GrabAnwalt 3 жыл бұрын
@@xxxstar90dustxxxr Mate, just because something is difficult to prove doesn't mean it isn't illegal. Yes, it is easy for mental health professionals to manipulate patients or documents. But in this movie, we are explicitly shown that they manipulate reports. And that, however hard it is to prove, makes it illegal. This does mean, the actresses words are objectively wrong
@xxxstar90dustxxxr
@xxxstar90dustxxxr 3 жыл бұрын
@@GrabAnwalt Nobody knows anything about the documents and nobody will ever know. And even if they did know about the documents it doesn’t prove that she did ALL the rest. It doesn’t even prove that she loves taking advantage of people and that she is a sociopath. She has that mental health professional coverage that it makes it very hard to prove what she really is. She will say something that will make it even harder to prove anything IF anyone even suspected her of being evil. I have been taken advantage and traumatised by a therapist. When I talk about it there are some people who don’t get it. They think that the therapist was trying to help and she was just not right for me. That is not the case. Also look at doctor Phill and the scandal with the ranch. He is just saying that he did not know. He most probably does it on purpose without carrying. Have you notice how he talks to people? Have you even notice that he talks to his “patients” on the show as if he is god? I doubt it. He tries to make them and the audience believe that they have a problem and that he genuinely wants to help. That is not the case, if anything he traumatises the person when he tries to “help” (a.k.a makes them believe that they have a problem. Many of them don’t have a problem.). Have you noticed?

I think most actors create a back story for their character as a tool to help them enrich the way they portray the character. I know some actors assign an action verb to each line of dialogue or action on stage as a tool to help them deliver a better performance. I believe these back stories are created by the actors and maybe directors get involved also. If major characters' back stories were added to scripts, movies would have to be longer, or plot in the script would have to be edited out. This is just my thoughts on how to answer your good question, and I may be wrong. No hostility or trolling went into my reply. Peace.

Physically, yes, "she gets hurt way more than she hurts" Never once does she use a gun, even though at one point she had 2 (from the boss' bodyguards). She easily could have killed people, yet never attempts to. She doesn't blow up an apartment. The only weapons she uses are a taser and a needle with some sort of anaesthetic. As for the mental abuse, she does prey on the elderly. But seriously, if I were to be put in a nursing home, the one we see is incredible. They have video games, large gorgeous room, tai chi... I've worked in many nursing homes, never seen that kind of service before. Don't get me wrong, she is a wretched human being, but I do find the movie manipulative in seeing her even worse than she is.

If it can be abused this badly then there are some issues that need to be safe guarded against. Therefore I'd say there are some loopholes, like the emergency hearing that didn't even notify the elderly person to give them the option of making an appearance.

Her character is a example of the harsh realities of the world a reminder that society as a whole is just a human construct that isn’t real. Trump rise to power is one recent example. The 1% views the world as a means and everyone in it. Honestly I viewed this film as if it was a parody of Niccolo Machiavelli’s “The Prince”. A great read btw. Cheers!
