Looks good, Ken. Going with clear resin was a good choice. I really like the "natural edge". Resin sure does make many things possible. After all, if people can resin and turn popcorn, coffee beans and cornbread - why not tree bark.

Hahaha, It amazes me that some people don't like resin. It helps make so many things possible that aren't without it.

I have to admit, I've grown tired of cast pieces but this one looks amazing! I thought it was interesting that the blank looked so dark coming out of the vacuum pot, but the close-ups you shared show some incredible highlights. Great job!!

Thank you. It took a while to get mine up and running after I retired from the military. Best advice I can give is....weigh each thing you buy. What I mean is look at it and ask yourself how long it will take you to pay it off and can you make enough items on it to pay for it. Using my lathe as an example. It cost $3500 a few years ago. I added up how many bowls I would have to make to pay it off. If that number can be reached in 3 months I feel it's worth the buy. I did the same thing with my table saw. How many cutting boards would I have to sell to pay it off and could I do it in 3 month? For my band saw it was band saw boxes and cutting bowl blanks. Every penny my business has ever made has gone back into my business, it's been that way for the last 10yrs. Oh one last thing. Stay away from the nice to haves until you buy the must haves. I could go on and on. I know you didn't ask for this, but hey I needed to reply to your comment. So it's really all your fault. 😂

Very cool looking bowl. Your idea for a future project to use red would also look great. I stabilized some mesquite bark and cast it a while ago. Looked really good in a couple of turned boxes I made with it. Also tried turning a pen with it; however, it is too brittle, even stabilized, and the pen blank blew out when I got it near final dimensions. I also found that there is some movement so the box pieces do eventually get some ridges at the resin/bark interfaces.

Aha! Don't forget that other apple wood bowl. This is different than turning wood with bark on it because the epoxy automatically stabilizes it and it's no bonding to the wood whereas turning with bark on wood makes a bonding difference.
