I had to learn a little of every single one I ran into. My skill of easily picking them up wasn't backed up by a steller memory. Decades later? I can stumble through two. Thanks for sharing a teachable moment & not becoming upset or offended. People come in various shades of brown. We will not become white over time by changing locations. It is genetically impossible unless there is a medical condition. Contrary to common belief, I can't speak for others, but I have no desire to be white. I'm comfortable in my own skin. I see no problem in discussing colour in a respectful manner. People are naturally curious and surely understanding differences brings about acceptance. Considering China had had little racial integration ignorance is bound to be high. On the whole people were very happy to interact and were respectful as this gentleman had educated himself and learnt the language. A definite advantage. Much respect to him.

You say the word ignorance; you do know that every species gravitates to the their own kind don't you. What's ignorant about that?
@angelaw947615 күн бұрын
@@QuantumEffectResiduePale skin is all over the world. People from India and Turkey have dark skin. In Biblical times people had dark skin. People all over the world see different skin tones on their TV's as well as when they travel. White supremacists tend to gravitate to their own. So you're very correct about that fact. People are murdered daily simply because of the skin that God gave them.
@julibeswick-valentine369015 күн бұрын
@QuantumEffectResidue Yes I used the word ignorance - meaning lack of knowledge or understanding. The Chinese culture is very different to ours in the West. Levels of education range from short term and very basic to what we would consider the peasant sector to highly educated matching those in the West. What we consider racialism is not a concept in China. Although discrimination in employment, the work place and in education is forbidden in law. As for species gravitating to each other that is a fact. However humans are one species no matter what colour we are or what features we have. We are fundamentally tribal and have natural biases but we do integrate often very successfully. The Anti racialism movement had been implemented to achieve something that may never totally possible because of our inate tribalism - that is all humans are totally equal, respected and accepted no matter what colour, culture, nationality, sexual persuasion or religious beliefs. Personally I have no issues with colour, difference of features or other nationalities ie none racialism. What I have a problem with is some cultures and religious beliefs which I am working on by educating myself.

You don’t have to like it. That’s ok. In most Asian cultures, even in India, ‘darker is bad’. I attended a wedding in the South of India one time with some Indian companions (we were invited even though we did not know anyone there; it was very generous of the villagers to do this). The (fairly poor) village tribe was quite dark. The bride was one of the most beautiful women I had ever seen in my life. I told/asked my (lighter-skinned) Indian travelling companions, “She is SO beautiful, isn’t she?” Them: “No. She is ugly.” Me: “What? Look; she is beautiful!” Them: “No. Dark skin; ugly.” Now, at the time I was a long blonde haired surfer dude with blue eyes from Australia, so I said to my Indian friends, “That makes you ugly and me handsome (I held my arm against his). By your logic, you can never become more attractive than me. How does that feel?!” They did not speak to me for two days, but they when they did resume speaking to me, there was no anger. They knew I was just trying to show them how their attitude made other people feel. They were offended, then reflected on what was said, let the thoughts linger and once the offence feelings subsided, they realised my motive was not to disrespect them but to give them another perspective to consider. It did not hurt our friendship to have that conflict. It deepened our friendship. In modern Asian cultures that are more Westernised, the desire for lighter skin is still there, but it’s acknowledged and joked about in self-deprecating style. Filipinos will call themselves ‘Blasian’ (Black-Asian) to own the disrespect they receive from (for example) Vietnamese people. It’s done with good humour. Cultural attitudes take time to shift. We must exercise prudence, patience, kindness whilst being gracious despite our pricked emotions. Taking offence from any interaction is a choice imho.
