This week I decide to challenge a legendary crafter to a craft off. Wyloch’s Armory joins me to craft a dieselpunk Skytrain. We will need to incorporate salvaged electronics for the build.
This is my first time tacking something that wasn’t purely fantasy. well, I cheat a bit by making it fantasy at the end. I manage to work on techniques that include metal weathering. metal work. scratch batching and more. I also talk a bit about cold porcelain, one of my favorite clay material at the moment.
Make sure to checheck out Wyloch's take on the challenge-

It's great how you immerse yourself into the landscape of your story, imagination, and when you return to reality you bring back something to share with the world. It has been a very long time since I watch a video like this. It got be thinking, back in 2008, I ran a game at Gencon called "Junk" which is the Red Neck Mecha combat game (I like to call it RedneckTech). The writer of the game, who name I called Recall, but his company was something like Black Omen Games, got into the Euro games and wanted to forget this was the first game he ever created. There were no minis for this game, I made my one with various sizes of small wooden block and dowls form Hobby Lobby, Pine wood derby parts (also from Hobby Lobby), and pinned the parts together with cut lengths of plastic rapped paper clips (I found this at Office Max) that make the joints look really nice. I ran out of time and never got to paint them. They are still in a box in my basement, and I think about getting them out and finishing them.

Bruh, cold porcelain is one of my favorite materials to work with. I use them for the base material when making oatmeal trees. Turns out SUPER durable. Like, I happily let my friends 2 y/o play with the stuff I've made out of it with zero fears. Edit: A great tip for doing rust on metal: Glue a small amount of baking soda (superglue+soda) to areas you want bad rust damage to be. BMC did this on a steampunk vat (IIRC) and it looked amazeballs.

Jennell Jaquays i used a heat gun on the super sculpey before adding the porcelain.

When I saw a preview of your project in Wyloch's video i thought "wow he mounted the train on a toy lobster". Never expected to see it sculpted from scratch! I will need to check out the liquid porcelain and see how it compares to milliput.

The delay was more than worth it for this absolute banger of a video. I love how you made dieselpunk fit your existing aesthetic: it really inspired me to look at things outside the vibe of my settings but find a way to incorporate what looks cool

I really really liked the paint until you added too much silver and white. You put white under a flap, shouldn’t that be black?
@FrankyDCrafter
@FrankyDCrafter 4 жыл бұрын
debibeverly0609 yea, also it looks a lot more silver on camera because it reflects more light. It’s also mi fist attempt so I’ll take notes from some of the mistakes I made here. Hopefully make the next one better.

Saw Wyloch's video first and thought "As always, an interesting piece, wonderfully execut-OMG WHAT THE HELL IS THAT AMAZING CRAB MONSTER TRAIN I NEED IN MY LIFE MORE THAN ANYTHING IN THE WORLD?!?!1!?" and rushed over here :) A. ma. zing job! I really love the storytelling you put in this project, creating an ironclad and rich backstory, finding your way to the edge and leaping over it (with a giant crab monster train thing, what a surprise). When I saw the old flaky paint on rusty bare metal I couldn't suppress a 'wow' ;) a Maybe the playability is indeed a little less thought out, but conceptually it trumps your legend's build in my opinion. High fives all 'round!! Thanks for inspiring us. Liked and subscribed on the spot :P

I really happy you enjoyed it. My biggest issue when it comes to dnd and my crafts is for sure playability. Something I failed to mention in the video is that I can take off the train part and just use that independently or use the monster independently. It’s still has a playability issue but at least with some more options. Sometimes I just make things to make them lol
@beginswithaj

@@FrankyDCrafter making for the sake of making is always the start of something great, be it now, or in the future. And playability is no more than just adding my some tiles ;) You've done all the rest already. Can't say I'm not a bit jealous of your tabletop players!
