I was screaming for half the video “pls phil just build another fishery so your houses are full again to upgrade”. Loved it. The population in each house change according to the satisfied needs, so when your population was lacking fish, for example, people left and that’s why you were having theses fluctuations in total population. Sometimes you don’t need to build or upgrade more houses, just satisfy their needs and they will grow.

"Schooner" is apparently a North American word, possibly scottish in origin (I looked it up out of curiosity). It's typically a small cargo ship, with no defensive capacity. "Frigate" is a word from the Mediterranean, possibility greek in origin, and is generally any kind of fullrigger ship built for speed. And yes, it's "skooner" and "frig-get". In swedish it's "skonare" and "fregatt", for comparison.

Hey Phil, I love the Anno 1800 content! A realistic take building a sea empire in the game seems really cool! I really love your take on building out your cities realistically, with the residents themselves in mind, giving them full on parcels. That being said, the game heavily pushes you into an "optimization" mindset: more residents means more taxes and workforce, but also means more needs and thus buildings to supply them. Space quickly becomes an issue, as well as managing maintenance costs versus the ultimate taxes you're collecting from your residents. Right now propaganda is helping to keep you positive on the income, but eventually the influence cost will be too high because you need defenses, ships, and islands. Other buildings, like town halls, trade unions, and harbor masters also cost influence after the first building, though are not strictly necessary. The Supply/Demand screen with the production statistics (Ctrl+Q) shows the particular good's supply/demand in tons/minute, and it is, imo, the most important screen in the game. Sorting all your produced goods by consumer/intermediate/etc. can be helpful to locate a particular good. Generally speaking, your revenue stream from consumer goods will be profitable over the maintenance costs of that good's production buildings, provided that production chain is consistently in balance, from raw materials all the way to consumption (e.g., if the demand of work clothes is 2 tons/min, the supply is exactly 2 tons/min, as well as the supply of wool to the processing building). Eventually, you can select multiple islands from the left-hand side as you develop multi-island supply chains to check that things are in balance. You can see the revenue that a good will give you for a resident type by clicking on that tier of resident building and hovering over the good in the window on the bottom right. Generally, it is not useful to overproduce consumer goods on one island unless you're expanding your local population or sending the excess to another island. That being said, certain consumer goods are extremely profitable to the right buyer, such as soap, and are worth over producing to be exported to the AI. When building up production chains, note that all "recipes" are 1:1. E.g., it takes one ton of wool for one ton of work clothes. However, the buildings display the production rate in "time per ton". E.g., rendering works take 1 minute to produce 1 ton of tallow while the soap factory takes 30 seconds to produce 1 ton of soap, or in other words, 2 tons of soap per minute. This means you will need 2 tons of tallow per minute to supply one soap factory. I.e., every soap factory requires two rendering works to keep it consistently supplied. The easy way to keep these in balance when building up your production chains is to take the ratio of the buildings' production times: E.g., (30 seconds for soap):(60 seconds for tallow) = (1 soap factory):(2 rendering works). I hope that makes sense and demystifies the production rates a little bit. I would love to see this series continue, so I hope you keep this up! Good luck, and thanks for all the great content!

Good points. On your notes about differences between the item production and the production screen, that's always been confusing -- I can't imagine trying to do the math to work out timing of shipping routes, etc. to make sure you have perfect trade routes and production chains. Ultimately, especially if you can manage to get to a good number of engineers or especially investors, you can almost ignore finances entirely and just overproduce everything by a slightly larger margin and give you some room for error on things. That also comes in handy for other times like building monuments, and for the stadium/worlds fair will need 100 tons of random things -- it's always handy to have a huge surplus of furs, gramophones, champagne, etc.

My experience with Anno has been that it's almost always better to meet your basic needs before adding houses -- they usually contribute to population. You can hover over each need on a house and it'll tell you what meeting it will give you (population, happiness, cash).
@supaflytoon7684
@supaflytoon7684 Жыл бұрын
Some little tips if I may: (EDIT- "little tips" for a number of pages, lol) 1. When U select any house - u see resident needs in bars - when u hover over them - they will tell u exactly what impact fulfilling each need has - how much income and how many more people will live in this house if/when needs are fulfilled. That is easy to spot sign that something is missing if bars are not full, then u should go to stat screen and see exactly how much stuff ur producing/need and therefore how much new production u need of each material/goods. Having good income is all about fulfilling those needs for each tier of residents. 2. When creating new production chain be aware of timings. Some things work out in 1:1 ratio - but most will not - it's easy to balance though - just check which building is "fastest" and adjust number of "slower" buildings to match production of entire chain to the same values. So one 30sec building need two 1min buildings and four 2min buildings to make entire chain work - this becomes very important the more u play and the harder/longer those production chains become. This allows u to maximise usage of workforce - very important is to have enough production for population with the smallest workforce possible, because more people means more needs that need to be fulfilled. Once u have one full chain of each goods working and ur needs grow - just copy entire chain and plop it to new location along with warehouse / fire station and move to next one. 3. Fulfilling needs of residents allows U to max houses and upgrade them to next population tier - happiness needs tab bring more money from each tier of population, it is not necessary to look after them to level up to next tier though. Goods from "needs" tab have to be looked after and adjusted all the time, when they are all good - it's time to look at happiness needs and start producing goods from that tab, best one at a time. Some production chains are long and VERY expensive, especially when u only start new tier of population, no need to satisfy all of them asap, rushing to having everything often causes huge income drop. Please notice that higher tier citizens will produce much more income then previous tier even if just some of their needs are satisfied, they will however require twice as much goods to consume - this game is all about balancing out economy and population. 4. Move goods by ships. You have to accept that U can't produce everything in one spot, different islands/worlds have unique resources that sometimes have to be combined for final product that is needed. That doesn't mean that u have to have entire chain and multiple population tiers on every island. Early example can be hops for beer - if u don't have hops on starter island - just colonize one that has them, build a fishery, market and a bunch of farmer houses and start growing hops - then transport hops to ur starter island and make beer there (u don't need worker class on the "hops" island with all their needs...). 5. Soap as u mentioned is great early source of extra income. It's worth to build extra line(s) of soap production on top of the one for ur workers/artisans/engineers needs. Whenever population grows - so does their needs - so it's important to add more and more production chains as needed (plus extra ones for soap if U want to continue selling it to prison boss Eli). U can then automate selling extras through ur port warehouse. Set up minimum amount stored so that u don't sell stuff that u need for ur population and then set up a trading route via ship between ur island and prison with soap - then ship will go back and forth between those islands carrying and selling extra soap every time for that constant income boost. U can also set up "passive trading" for other materials, that ur overproducing by setting minimum amount stored and then (in port sell tab) set up amount of goods at which NPCs will buy them off ya. Every now and then NPCs visit ur islands and will passively trade with You if u set it up in ur port warehouse menus. Some stuff like building materials will at times fill up and can be sold that way - other stuff like soap is worth selling to a specific NPC (in this case prison). 6. Other stuff worth selling, later in the game progress. These goods are requested by mentioned traders - so they will pay A LOT more than what they are worth Eli in the prison - Soap for 384/t Madame Kahina - Fur Coates for 992/t Isabel Sarmiento (new world) - Weapons for 912/t Pirates (Anne and Jean) will buy any alcohol at premium prices, but u need to have trade rights first. Schnapps - 80/t, Rum - 96/t and Beer for a whooping 1040/t (and DLC Traders) Old Nate (Cape Trelawney) will buy Gold for 4.4K/t Paying the most is Emperor Ketema (land of lions) - he will buy: - Penny Farthings for 2.8K/t - Pocket Watches for 13K/t - Gramophones for 44K/t - Steam Carriages for 66K/t All these are late(r) game goods, but once u have them in ur production chain - it's well worth to sell any extras to Emperor Ketema - this is the quickest way to make MILLIONS. Damn .... sorry .... this is way too much to read .... just exited to see U play Anno1800 i guess.

This was entertaining, hope to see more Anno content from you. Small tip: keep an eye on storage capacity. Expand it if you have to or tone down on intake. Your trading routes to the other islands were doing little because you were constantly capping out on the supplies you could send there. If necessary, you can actually set each trade route's behavior when it can't get rid of its supplies and then gets prevented from taking on new supplies. For instance, you can set it to throw supplies overboard to prevent a trade route from stalling.

If you want to play a military empire that's gonna be interesting, but keep in mind that Anno is a mostly chill game. It is much easier to buy off the pirate to the point you can get to trade rights with them and buy your weapons from them. Keep producing ships though, they need only basic materials and can be sold to Archibald for a good profit. Another tip is that in your warehouses you can set a minimum goods level for your goods. That means trade routes will always leave that much in your stores. This is what happened with your sausage (hehe) at the end. Your trade ships emptied local stores and consumer needs went unfulfilled until your slaughterhouses produced new goods. Final tip as others have mentioned, the time that is shown in the build menu means how long does this building take to convert one ton of each input good into one ton of output good. Grain farms take one minute to produce grain, while malthouses only need 30 seconds to turn one ton of grain into one ton of malt, so you need two grain farms for every malt house. Brewery also needs 30 seconds to turn one ton of malt and one ton of hops into one ton of beer. So it actually aligns pretty well with the malt house, but how many hop farms do you need for one brewery? (I'm sorry if come across like a kindergarten teacher 🙂)

I enjoy the layered complexity of the game. You start out with just farmers and their needs. Simple. Then you need to get workers, which upgrades your farmer workforce, so now you don't have just one population, you have two different strata of workforce that you need to keep happy, each with different needs and supply chains that still interact with each other, so as the game goes you're balancing not only your various supply chains, but the levels of your various work forces that both feed and are fed by said supply chains, and no strata becomes irrelevant.

Hey Phil, I love your videos and this one with making Anno beautiful, I would recommend to watch some of the videos from What Darren plays, he plays Anno to make it beautiful not efficient and his islands are so breathtakingly beautiful, you would love them.

I enjoy your playthrough. It is different and I like it. It is totally ok, that you don't have the experience with the game as the Anno Only channels. And I mean it really positively. I like to invite you to look into the quantities of production lines. If something needs 30sec per ton, you'll get 2 per min. So if the next factory in the line produces only 1 ton per minunte, then you'd need to build two of these factories to make up to the other building. Also to fill more people in one house, click on a home and click on lifestyle goods. There you can fullfill more needs, that bring more people and more money in. Cheers mate, I enjoy this series :)

A festival increases the attractiveness of your island, but when the festival ends so does the added attractiveness. I think that is one of the things that cause the unhappy "this island has let itself go" newspaper articles; not much you can do about that. Another cause is when you place unattractive industry, like a pig farm or steel furnace. Keep an eye on how much the island's attractiveness goes down when you do so (at top middle), and you might be able to compensate for that by placing decorations like trees. I sometime decorate my towns in blueprint mode, then upgrade the decorations when I need to add an unattractive production building. I'm not sure it's enough, but it might be worth a try. If a fire causes ruins those will create unattractiveness too, but you get a warning while the fire is going from the threatening music, and afterwards there will be a warning if you check the lowest icon of the little row along the left edge. Clicking on the warning will jump you straight to the ruins, so you can repair them immediately. *** Claiming more islands will give you some free workforce on each island when you reach certain milestones. So you can claim an island but not build a marketplace and houses, so you don't need to provide them with food and clothes either, but can still put in a few mines, or lumberjacks & sawmills, or unattractive piggy stuff, or whatever seems useful to provide to your other islands. But keep an eye on your *influence points* (top left), as you need those to buy islands, but also to build ships, town halls and trade unions. When your expedition unlocks the Land of Lions (Enbesa) or the New World, you will need to have enough influence points in reserve to settle several islands over there too. Gaining population will increase your influence points. *** Now your expedition is unlocking Enbesa, once you get there, I've found 2 things important. 1) Start trading a few pocketwatches, buying them from Sir Archibald and selling them to Emperor Ketema. This is a very good source of income! Buying the watches is costly, but the return on investment is very high, so even starting with 10 at a time is worthwhile. Build up your bank account until you have enough reserves to invest in setting up a regular trade route for that. 2) You need to get to the second level of people in Enbesa to make their special bricks, in order to claim more islands there, as no single island will have all your needs. So try to claim what you need most with the load on the ship the Emperor gives you. You can wait to claim Tabourime until a bit later, as your opponents will not do so first - but they may try to win it off you by fighting, if you claim it and aren't up to defending it yet. Anyway, don't grow too many elders yet, as then they will start demanding tobacco from the new world, and you're not set up to provide that yet. *** If some houses want something you can't provide (enough of) yet, you can click on the little supply line in the house's screen to forbid that consumption. It can help stop a lot of vacillating between happy & increasing, and unhappy & leaving workforce, and the unhappy newspaper articles that causes.

Great video! Just a few notes: 1. Don't go too crazy with building frigates, each one costs 100 upkeep. Overbuilding will cost so much money, this also applies to the flame thrower towers I say this since you were at -900 in income at the end! 2. A minor pet peeve: but the proper pronunciation of the ships is "Fri-get" for frigate and "Skooner" for schooner. All and all a good video!

It's already been said, but my own take on pronunciation is: Frigate is more "fri-gut" - a soft uh like "post-graduate" or "inappropriate". Not fri-gate as in "garden gate". Previous comments on "schooner" are correct - skooner. That's in British English, of course. I can't speak as to the original northern european pronounciation. And ironically it ties in nicely to the beer theme of the episode, with a "schooner" glass of ale equating to 2/3 of an Imperial pint in current measurements. In the UK, some of the stronger ales (6%+) are often limited to schooners for serving, so people don't get too hammered. One notable exception is Newcastle Brown Ale, which, while usually coming in a 600-660ml bottle, is traditionally served in a "Geordie schooner" glass, which equates to half an Imperial pint or 284ml. Now I want beer...

In your main trading post you can set a limit of stock. Any excess will be loaded onto your ships for sale or transfer to another island, but the production island will never run out.
