You have brought me fond memories of my childhood days. Our house was near a rubber estate. The rubber tappers used to slit the bark of the trees in a pattern. An earthen cup was fitted on to a strong wire which was tied around the tree. The slicing of the bark was done in a slanting manner and the latex flows down to a small curved metal plate and from there, the latex drips into the cup without any wastage. Every rubber tapper taps about 150 to 200 hundred trees by 12 noon. It is then collected and carried to the factory. There it is weighed and the weight is recorded in a record book under the name of each tapper daily. So that he/she gets the wage according to the amount of latex brought in. After weighing all the latex are mixed with formic acid to preserve and coagulate the latex. It is then poured into wide rectangular metal trays. Once it is coagulated, it is taken out and laid out and manually stepped upon to flatten it. It is then rolled through a flattening machine. The flatten sheets are then sent to a smoke house to be dried. As a specific time period is needed to dry and not depending on the sunlight, all the sheets are dried in the smoke house to be sold to exporters. The sheets are also graded according to their quality. The sheet which are perfect with no holes are graded as the best and paid more than the rest with small holes in it. Our wonderful lady has done the whole process, on a smaller scale, to the best of her ability. A big hats off to her. She had also cooked long beans and some leafy vegetables, to give her children a quick meal. A beautiful and dedicated mother. I have very high regard for you dear. I have written a long comment with detailed information about rubber sheets, only with good intention for some of my fellow subscribers to know how rubber sheets are made on large scale for export. Hello Anoma! Wow, that was so interesting to see how you harvested the milk and then made the rubber sheets. What was the liquid you put in the rubber milk to make it solid? The fresh Long beans looked delicious. If y'all like pickles, you can "pickle" the Long beans and they make a yummy snack by themselves or to eat with a sandwich etc too. We call them "Dilly Beans". Preserve them in a seasoned vinegar brine that's boiling HOT, you can even throw some peppers, onion and or garlic bulbs in the jars too. it does take at least 2 weeks to let them sit but they are well worth the wait...they're so delicious!!
