Efficiency on a pickaxe does not work on sponges. While using Efficiency, the proper tool for a block must be used in order to receive the speed benefit; the enchantment has no effect if the block is mined with the incorrect tool. The proper tools for sponges are the hoes.

I once found two monuments less than 100 blocks from each other. I had just spawned in on a really small island. I just quit the world because I had DOUBLE to possibly even QUADRUPLE (went back on the same seed, found two other monuments on the other side of the island) mining fatigue and it took me 7-9 minutes to get a single piece of wood.
