Mojang isn't trying to stop people from downgrading, it's just a side effect of moving from nbt to data driven items, this helps a lot with map makers and similar. Also what version did you get the stack of armour in?

Fan fact If you are in 1.21 and you have collected illegal items you can put them in chest and in nether and after that transfer the nether to your world you can have those items without downgrading the world. It mean go in a new world collect item put in the nether transfer the nether to your world go in tha same coordinate in the nether and you have the items without losing items😅.

Solution:empty ender chest and inventory then exit then go to world data put chunks read only join back fly with a spare elyrta 20k blocks then downgrade and do whatever you want

Heya, fyi it doesn’t matter that they removed the ability to go back, because if you make a new world you can make a copy of your nether and replace it with one from a world that you put stuff in a chest in the nether. Also, you missed out on feather falling tools and armor by skipping past the enchanting process in the first version you played on. It’s kinda sad for me since I knew about this…. Thought I’d let you know in case you’re ant it though!

i dont think they do, my understanding is the change is because they're replacing NBT with Components, note how there's been a lot of progress in vanilla modding (datapacks and commandblocks) functionality, like better dud items, custom foods in vanilla, etc - and an inability to downgrade without losing items is just a sideeffect because old versions dont have a conversion system back to NBT because the components system didnt exist yet
